To not pay my TV license?

Just wondering if anyone else here is part of the TV licence resistance. I’ve never paid for one and I don’t watch live tv, but don’t want them having my details

You also don’t have to talk to them when they visit.
You can close the door and not let them in. They claim differently but they aren’t allowed.
Could be that the person admitted to watching tv as it’s aired. So they were fined.

And how is it tight to not pay for unused services?

badlydrawnperson · 20/12/2018 19:16

I don't think the telly was on so how did they know when they checked?

Well if they weren't watching (or recording) live TV or iplayer they shouldn't have been fined.

Unfortunately, as this thread shows, not everyone knows the law and there are tales of intimidation tactics from the TV licence people if they see a chance for an easy conviction (that may or may not be true - I don't know).

Hayles88 · 20/12/2018 19:17

I declare I don't watch live tv and apart from their generic "threatening" letters. They leave me alone. Id much rather pay for Netflix and have decent t.v. then pay for the utter shit the BBC put on. It really should be an opt out service. Where the channels can be blocked if you don't want to watch the boring rubbish.

haydn345 · 20/12/2018 19:17

I do not pay for one. I pay for NowTV, Netflix and Deezer. BBC needs to modernise thoroughly imo (eg subscription service, zero gender pay gap).

badlydrawnperson · 20/12/2018 19:19

Not paying for a TV licence under circumstances where one isn't required isn't "tight" it's sensible.

GemmeFatale · 20/12/2018 19:21

@busybarbara it’s not tight to not pay for something you don’t use. Unless you’d like to pay your fair share of my utility bills? I mean you don’t use those services but I don’t see why you wouldn’t pay towards them.

Spaghettibol · 20/12/2018 19:22

I think some people are missing the point of this. I haven’t declared online that I don’t watch it. I don’t need to. I haven’t signed any contract to say I have to declare it, Just don’t open the door them. I haven’t paid for it for 3 years

OP posts:
Spaghettibol · 20/12/2018 19:23

I know people who have been fined when they didn’t even watch live tv or bbc iplayer and declared online that they didn’t. Once they have your name and details they can do anything

OP posts:
Spaghettibol · 20/12/2018 19:25

Also, I do watch tv like once a month but I’m not going to pay £140 or however much it is to do that. I haven’t signed anything to say I will pay in exchange for live tv services. Also I don’t support the bbc after the pedo ring

OP posts:
AloneLonelyLoner · 20/12/2018 19:28

I pay 17 euros a month in Germany for the shittest tv ever. I’d give my right arm for the BBC and I hardly ever watched it in the UK. The BBC is still the best TV in the world imo after living in at least 5 countries. TV that is independent is worth its weight in gold.

AutoFilled · 20/12/2018 19:29

@Spaghettibol it’s not true they can do anything. They send me a notice every few years to say I need to make a declaration. I go online and do that. They then leave me alone. I have not had anyone at my door asking to check.

AutoFilled · 20/12/2018 19:30

Well if you watch TV then pay. Or you can switch to a cheaper service like Netflix. They have better shows than the BBC.

CherrySherbert · 20/12/2018 19:30

Yeah, I signed my declaration about 4 years ago and that was that.

YABU not to pay if you watch live tv on occasion though.

longwayoff · 20/12/2018 19:31

The licence fee is for having a tv receiver, not for using bbc services.

PengAly · 20/12/2018 19:34

We dont pay it and we actually phoned them up to have use taken off their chase list as we are not required to pay it because we:
Do not watch live TV
Do not watch BBC live or catch up

If the above are true for you than you DO NOT NEED TO PAY IT. It even says this on the small print on the letters. Dont listen to anyone who says you have to pay if your own a a TV- this isnt true.

AutoFilled · 20/12/2018 19:34

@longwayoff that’s not the case anymore. It used to be. They changed the law because you can watch live via the internet and also you have to pay if you watch iplayer. We get everything online now. I used to use the iplayer before the law change. You can check it online on the licensing website. I would imagine there are a lot of people who don’t have TV receiving equipment, especially among younger renters.

PengAly · 20/12/2018 19:36

Also you CAN watch 4od, itv, channel five ect on catch up without a license..you just cant watch them live or any BBC iplayer without

TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 19:37

The licence fee is for having a tv receiver, not for using bbc services.

No. It is not. It is only payable if you watch live tv or use iplayer.

It makes no difference whether you could do so; it is about what you actually do.

TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 19:39

I totally agree that not buying something you don’t use isn’t a resistance. Unless no buying, for example, nappies when you don’t have a baby counts as a resistance. Which it doesn’t.

The OP does need to buy one because s/he does sometimes watch live tv. That’s why s/he is harping on about the resistance as if it’s some noble cause and not just taking the piss.

Schmoobarb · 20/12/2018 19:40

Not paying for a service you don’t use and don’t have to pay for - doesn’t sound like much of a resistance to me Xmas Confused

MakeAHouseAHome · 20/12/2018 19:40

If you watch it (even if just once a month) but don't pay then YABVVVVU. And I hope you get fined.

longwayoff · 20/12/2018 19:41

Thanks auto, I'm well behind, had no idea. Apologies for misleading anyone.

MakeAHouseAHome · 20/12/2018 19:42

You need a tv license to watch 4od, itv etc even on catch up btw....

TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 19:44

You need a tv license to watch 4od, itv etc even on catch up btw....

No. Just iplayer.

TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 19:47

See. It annoys me that there is such poor understanding of what you need a tv license for. You’d think they were doing it on purpose to get people to buy them unnecessarily.
