To not pay my TV license?

Spaghettibol · 20/12/2018 18:13

Just wondering if anyone else here is part of the TV licence resistance. I’ve never paid for one and I don’t watch live tv, but don’t want them having my details

OP posts:
stayathomer · 21/12/2018 07:17

Ps love tv and pat it as a normal bill (In Ireland) a lot of people over here are proud they purposely find a way around watching tv so they don't have to pay but it's this time of year tv is excellent so I think if that's what you want but you're missing out

LoniceraJaponica · 21/12/2018 07:46

Vitalogy I would be happy for the BBC to become a subscription service, and pay for it. I agree that the model for paying for the BBC will have to change, but I think it will have a knock on effect on other channels who buy programmes made by the BBC. So BBC avoiders will still end up paying for the BBC, but in a different way.

"Why do you think it's ok for others to feel forced to pay for something they have no interest in though?"

And where does it say that in my post? Confused
I understand why posters don't want to pay for a TV licence, but I don't understand the hatred on mumsnet (other threads about the TV licence included) for the BBC.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 21/12/2018 07:54

Maddie - you don't believe people who don't sat h live TV? Confused

How odd. I have no need or desire to watch it. My TVs aren't connected to aerials. If something happens I look on Twitter.

MrMeSeeks · 21/12/2018 07:56

Why is there so much hatred for the BBC on mumsnet?

I think it’s a pile of shit and haven’t watched any of their channels in years.

doesnt anyone ever watch the news on TV? Live
Nope, newspapers, or it will pop on my phone in someway.

Vitalogy · 21/12/2018 08:04

but I don't understand the hatred on mumsnet (other threads about the TV licence included) for the BBC. Paying out your hard earned cash that can be a struggle to pay, on yet another bill. Or when it's for something you don't use or aren't interested in can get peoples backs up. Can't be that hard to understand surely.

boringlyboring · 21/12/2018 08:05

LoniceraJaponica I think it’s more annoyance at having to pay for a service to watch another, when a lot of people would be happy to live without the BBC, rather than hatred for the BBC itself (atleast for me anyway).

BeanTownNancy · 21/12/2018 08:14

@maddiemookins16mum

I never quite totally believe anyone who says the don’t watch live TV whatsoever, never at all. What about the news, or any sort of major event that unfolds over a few hours.

There are many many online newspapers to choose from. At least as up-to-date as a news programme. If things were really kicking off, I could visit a friend or neighbour or a pub who has a TV.

I actually genuinely don't know if I could get my TV to play BBC1 because I've never tried to tune the channels in. I actually don't know how to do it because I have never had a TV licence or watched TV in any house I have lived in since I was about 13.

I don't understand the need to have a TV playing crap you don't care about all day long.

PengAly · 21/12/2018 08:30

Op i dont really understand why you posted tbh. It sounds like you already made your mind up and know that its wrong

Santasonmynaughtylist · 21/12/2018 08:31

If I watch only ITV on my TV do I need to pay the BBC a licence fee?

AutoFilled · 21/12/2018 08:33

@ callymarch doesnt anyone ever watch the news on TV? Live? Netflix and Amazon dont have news. what if a major event was happening and you wanted to see what was happening, live? I suppose you could pop next door and use their tv!

Why would anyone want to watch the TV for news? I always grab my tablet and use twitter, apple news app, and then the newspaper like the guardian, the telegraph, the independent. You can also get overseas ones like NZ herald (where I'm from). Like yesterday, I get all the Gatwick drone news I want from online sources.

AutoFilled · 21/12/2018 08:34

@Santasonmynaughtylist Yes, you do. Unless you use ITV catch up. Because the TV licence is live TV + BBC iplayer catch up service. All other catch up services do not need a TV licence.

MagnificentSevenHeaven · 21/12/2018 08:35

the fact it’s advert free and happily pay the license that funds hours of radio and some brilliant innovative television.

I used to be like this - but I'm getting fed up of the BBC Bias.

Also, I feel that because they're funded by "the establishment" they tend not to push them too far in case they lose it.

If you want ad free, innovative TV then Netflix & Amazon Prime are great! I've moved to commercial radio too - don't even notice the ads anymore. Radio X has some of the best DJ's in the world!

I still pay the licence fee because I do watch BBC & other live channels - but I think it needs to move to a subscription model so people can opt in/out without being criminalised.

AutoFilled · 21/12/2018 08:38

And I pay £5 a month to the Guardian. I think it's better value for money then the BBC or live TV. I also pay spotify, netflix, now tv and amazon prime. I think a lot of people who don't pay TV licences aren't being cheap. It's just they don't use the BBC services or live TV. I'm happy to pay for services I do use.

I haven't watched live for over 10 years. I remember back in the days with bit torrent TV, before streaming. I was never fan of broadcast and them dictating my watching schedule. Now we get to the point where I can pay for services where I can choose what I want to watch with the click of a button. It's awesome.

Bluntness100 · 21/12/2018 08:39

I'm sorry op, but seriously " tv licence resistance" " don't support the bbc". They aren't a political party 🤣

Just be honest and say you're tight or can't afford it, so don't want to pay.

You risk a fine.

Tv licence resistance indeed 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

SaucyJack · 21/12/2018 08:44

“I never quite totally believe anyone who says the don’t watch live TV whatsoever, never at all.“

Why? We haven’t actually had a TV connection for years, so we couldn’t watch it even if we wanted to.

We watch plenty of films and tv programmes tho- and some of it is (paid for) BBC content so it’s not the beeb I have a problem with.

We just prefer the freedom and choice we have from using on-demand services. I don’t think I could or would want to get back into the habit of having to watch X programme at Y time on Z day now I’m used to the alternative.

Believeitornot · 21/12/2018 08:46

I like the bbc because they do produce quality tv. It’s not high volume mass produced trash - which is why they struggle to break into the American market.

I do think that the bbc runs the risk of becoming too arrogant. Along with the old and thin “anti Establishment”, the BBC is an easy target.

(I call the Establishment argument “thin” because it’s all soundbite and no logic)

If the bbc becomes subscription based, it’ll also have to bring in adverts. The likes of Amazon and Netflix aren’t doing that well and I suspect they’ll change their model soon.

Believeitornot · 21/12/2018 08:47

You still need s license for the iplayer?

SaucyJack · 21/12/2018 08:50

Where did I say I use iPlayer?

We have Netflix and Now.

PhilODox · 21/12/2018 08:54

I never quite totally believe anyone who says the don’t watch live TV whatsoever, never at all. What about the news, or any sort of major event that unfolds over a few hours

Confused what, some people live differently to you maddiemookins?
How very dare they? Grin

I haven't watched television for 13 years, have no way to receive live television, and haven't used iPlayer since they changed the law. I get news from R4 (true story- 13 years ago I rang TV licensing to pay my radio licence, to be laughed at down the phone and told the radio licence had been stopped years before!), from websites, twitter etc.

Believeitornot · 21/12/2018 08:58

My point @SaucyJack was that the bbc isn’t just live TV anymore. I know you don’t watch the iplayer from your posts.

Santasonmynaughtylist · 21/12/2018 09:04

Thanks @AutoFilled
Just seems strange that ITV provide a free service but the BBC get to charge you for it.

I pay my licence fee though as I do watch BBC

SushiMonster · 21/12/2018 09:06

I pay the license fee because 1) I watch BBC and use iPlayer and 2) I value a (relatively) independent broadcaster

SushiMonster · 21/12/2018 09:12

I occasionally watch live TV such as channel 4, and the rest of the time I use Netflix or on demand tv. Never watch the BBC. I’m aware tv licence is for any live tv however I don’t support the BBC or use it’s services (over 90% of tv licence fee goes to the bbc)

Well I don’t support Brexit, but I’m still having to pay my income tax to the government to run the shit show.

You can’t pick and choose.

PhilODox · 21/12/2018 09:13

*Santa's" itv isn't a free service- they take their payment in your time spent watching their adverts!

Itv and channel 4 do also receive licence money AFAIAA, but not at the same levels as the BBC, because originally the BBC was essentially an arm of the state.

Thishatisnotmine · 21/12/2018 10:00

The website called "whatdotheyknow.com"!
is incorrect from that screenshot. I work for a Government organisation who have the authority to issue summons. Summons can definitely be issued by people other than JPs or Magistrate, they just have to be signed JP or Court Clerke. The TV LA will draft the summons, send it to the court for signing and then serve the signed copies.
