To wonder how much longer school will do nativity plays?

As there is no biblical scripture to show Jesus was born at the time of the winter solstice. Surely it’s just teaching creationism or that the world is flat?

It's bought in scripts now - the whoopsadaisy angel and the sleepy shepherd I can think of off hand. It's lovely, half the school are Asian but their parents are front and centre being told to put away their cameras!

DGRossetti · 20/12/2018 17:11

Is it ok to say Islam is “made up nonsense too”? or is it only safe to say it about Christianity?

depends how much people know about Islam. All I know is from what I've heard Muslim friends discuss and tell me when I ask. But since it stems from the stories of Abraham which are the basis for Judaism and Christianity, a dismissal of Christianity is pretty much an implied dismissal of Islam Hmm.

As far as I know Mohammed is a real historical figure which non religious sources attest.

And to underscore my previous comments, that's probably as far as I would be happy to go within the limits of my own ignorance. However, I do know that you can't really compare Christianity - which mainly works to a strongly hierarchical ideal - and Islam which has no such parallel. (If my already admittedly limited understanding is correct.)

Personally, I think the best thing about all religions are the stories. Who doesn't love a good story ?

cosysock · 20/12/2018 17:13

Can anyone give any instances of a child suffering any damage of having to endure a nativity? Confused Why do other religions happily accept their traditions and culture with pride. I’m sick of the whinging about a harmless nativity that children have enjoyed for generations, what’s the bloody harm for goodness sake.

Avegemitesandwich · 20/12/2018 17:14

Since this is AIBU, I was responding to the poster noting that the UK seems intractably able to mock Christianity, but not other religions. I was simply suggesting one possible reason why that is.

But you are not really 'mocking' Christianity are you, you are just saying its a load of old bollocks. And if you believe that about Christianity, then presumably you feel the same about Islam or Judaism seeing as they are all rooted in similar things.

DGRossetti · 20/12/2018 17:16

Is that a quote ?

WhatisFreddoingnow · 20/12/2018 17:19

@DGRossetti

All Catholics are Christians. Not all Christians are Catholics.

Catholicism is the 'original' Christianity with Protestant denominations springing from Christianity in subsequent years.

cosysock · 20/12/2018 17:21

So what makes him believable.

DGRossetti · 20/12/2018 17:21

@WhatisFreddoingnow

having grown up in the UK, I knew that already. Not sure why you needed to remind me ? (Especially since my DF is still around Grin )

DGRossetti · 20/12/2018 17:22

Wasn't aware I said he was Hmm

WhatisFreddoingnow · 20/12/2018 17:24

@DGRossetti

"Except Catholics aren't real Christians. Or is that Protestants ? I keep getting the two confused."

If you were making a 'joke', I apologise.

Many people get it confused anyway
I saw on another thread that people kept separating Catholicism from Christianity.

SilverySurfer · 20/12/2018 17:28

Woooman
Completely proving my point, Bartholin. Do you also tell Muslims or Hindus that they believe in made up nonsense or do you respect the fact that they believe in something different to you and leave them to it.

If anyone asked for my opinion, whatever their religion, I would say the same thing. It's my belief that there is no god and religions were created as a method to control the uneducated masses centuries ago. How they have survived to this day is beyond my comprehension when you consider some of the negative not to say down right evil actions in the name of religion.

HTH

Flamingosnbears · 20/12/2018 17:31

For as long people have faith and believe there will be a Nativity.

If you don't like it go to a non faith school

DGRossetti · 20/12/2018 17:31

If it weren't for all the blood shed over the difference, Catholics and Protestants it would be a joke ...

I blame the Synod of Whitby. Only because I heard about it once. Not because I actually know anything about it ....

user1457178042 · 20/12/2018 17:35

A couple of years ago my son's primary school nativity lasted 2 hours and 45 minutes, I don't think they could conceivably do one any longer than that.

CherrySherbert · 20/12/2018 17:36

I don't think there's any historical doubt that Christmas is when it is to appropriate Pagan festivals like Yule and whatever else. Similar to Easter (where even the name of the festival has Pagan origins).

I don't really care until Christians get snooty about non-Christians celebrating.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 20/12/2018 17:39

People slate Christianity because if they do, nothing happens.

People don't slate Islam because if they do, they'll get blown up, innit?

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 20/12/2018 17:40

Please be aware that's completely tongue in cheek and said to show the narrow mindedness of some people on Mumsnet/the Internet.

Though I don't believe in religion of any sort myself, it's just kind to respect the beliefs of others. Unless they're causing harm, of course.

Mishappening · 20/12/2018 17:42

The Christmas story is to me (as an agnostic) a myth. But it is a powerful myth that talks of peace and the strength that there can exist in being weak - that powerful and rich people are not necessarily the most important. I find that moving and profound.

I believe that we underestimate the importance of myths. They often contain profound truths from which we can all learn, whatever out beliefs (or absence thereof).

I have been to many nativities this year (lots of GC and also a school gov) and they have all carried their different merits - but all were fun for the children and all contained the basic story.

I do not think these will stop. Apart from anything else children cannot understand the history of the world or of art without this basic information.

Ther is nothing to stop parents telling the children that these are myths - and also telling them why they are important.

cosysock · 20/12/2018 17:52

“If anyone asked for my opinion, whatever their religion, I would say the same thing.”

I’ve noticed this is what people always say when they’re accused of being quite vocal about Christianity being “nonsense” or whatever but not about other religions, but the thing is, they never actually say it.....Nobody really says “Islam is made up nonsense” like they do about Christianity, all you get is remarks like “I’d say the same about all religions”.....Hmm

cosysock · 20/12/2018 17:58

If it weren't for all the blood shed over the difference, Catholics and Protestants it would be a joke ...

And what about, if you’re the “wrong sort of muslim”, or even if you’re simply a Christian. All that killing.

Avegemitesandwich · 20/12/2018 18:21

Please be aware that's completely tongue in cheek and said to show the narrow mindedness of some people on Mumsnet/the Internet.

Why do you think that people who will openly slate Christianity don't slate Islam then?

Avegemitesandwich · 20/12/2018 18:22

Nobody really says “Islam is made up nonsense” like they do about Christianity, all you get is remarks like “I’d say the same about all religions”.....hmm

Yes, this is true.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 20/12/2018 18:23

Why do you think that people who will openly slate Christianity don't slate Islam then

Why don't you ask them that?

Walkingdeadfangirl · 20/12/2018 18:31

Do many schools actually put on a nativity play anymore? I thought it was dying out as not many people are still believing jesus has anything to with christmas.

Oswin · 20/12/2018 18:31

Thing is Islam has absolutely no affect on my life. Christianity does though. Not in a good way either. So while I do believe that all religion is nonsense, I don't have reason in my daily life to be annoyed with any other religion.
