To wonder how much longer school will do nativity plays?

As there is no biblical scripture to show Jesus was born at the time of the winter solstice. Surely it’s just teaching creationism or that the world is flat?

According to the 2011 census, 59.4% of people reported their faith as Christian. 24.7% of people reported they were not religious.

BlueJay1 · 20/12/2018 21:23

I love that my dd school do a nativity. It's traditional in England.

BlueJay1 · 20/12/2018 21:25

Btw - Jewish family here. We still love a children's nativity show

53rdWay · 20/12/2018 21:25

Church attendance is below 10%, though, so a lot of the people who'll identify as CofE or whatever in the census aren't particularly religious in their everyday lives.

GirlsBlouse17 · 20/12/2018 21:29

Being a Christian isn't just about going to church services though

53rdWay · 20/12/2018 21:32

I didn't say it was just about going to church services, I said the rate of regular church attendance is low. Which it is.

cosysock · 20/12/2018 21:35

I suspect if there had been a history of Jews, Hindus or Muslims forcing their beliefs on all and sundry throughout the past 1,000+ years (with some horrific consequences) they would be treated a little differently

But you’re going back to the dark ages, why are you ignoring what’s going on now. Shock it’s hardly Christians carrying out terrorist attacks across the world is it. Or are you choosing to ignore that.

GirlsBlouse17 · 20/12/2018 21:36

You are right, it is low, but people still identify as being Christian, even if they don't attend church

DGRossetti · 20/12/2018 21:37

Oh the irony. You do realise that most of the Middle East is Islamic because of the Islamic conquests (i.e. mass murder, rape, colonisation by the sword?).

Yes. And if this were a thread about a nativity in a middle eastern school, I might have commented as such. but it isn't. So I didn't.

IdentifyasTired · 20/12/2018 21:42

The Nativity is an amazing story. The idea of a perfect (sinless) woman whose body is the vessel through which the entire world is saved.

That is powerful. To me anyway.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 20/12/2018 21:43

This link is more recent. In 2017, survey results showed that over half the UK is non-religious. I will be celebrating that this Christmas.

GirlsBlouse17 · 20/12/2018 21:45

I don't see any link WhyDont but if it makes you happy, you celebrate

woodhill · 20/12/2018 21:51

I think it is better to have a choice and freedom of religion as it is in the UK and not leave a vacuum

katekat383 · 20/12/2018 22:05

Atheists shouldn’t actually be celebrating Christmas - logically speaking. Hmm

katekat383 · 20/12/2018 22:06

But I guess it’s pic’n mix time for them.

Well if you want to involve logic, nor should anyone.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 20/12/2018 22:33

Why? Christmas is a mish-mash of fairy stories and things stolen from different religions and different countries. It means completely different things to different people. I celebrate Christmas because I love the decorations, the family time, the festive spirit of giving, the food and I fucking love presents.

I can also celebrate what I want Smile

GreatestShowUnicorn · 20/12/2018 22:43

No but they can celebrate a range of midwinter festivals which the church tagged the birth of Jesus on to in order to convert people.

So if people agree that the nativity is a fairy story why are they still religious surely if it’s a fairy story then the whole thing is and everyone should just admit it’s all made up?

OP posts:
53rdWay · 20/12/2018 22:51

You think religious people should logically deconvert based on not believing that P1's nativity play, complete with 8 deputy innkeepers and 15 sulking sheep, is a faithful journalistic account of life in Bethlehem 2000 years ago?

mothertruck3r · 20/12/2018 23:02

Yes. And if this were a thread about a nativity in a middle eastern school, I might have commented as such. but it isn't. So I didn't.

I doubt that there would be nativity in Middle Eastern schools as most Christians have been driven out. Not very safe being a Christian in the Middle East these days...

mothertruck3r · 20/12/2018 23:04

OP, better knock down all the churches, synagogues and mosques as they are all teaching creationism..?

WaitrosePigeon · 20/12/2018 23:08

Some really disrespectful comments on this thread.

PennyArcade · 20/12/2018 23:22

All religions are made up, fantastical nonsense. Why do MN posters concentrate on the singular, seasonal, made up Christianity story to slate??

If you have young children you need to be aware that your children will come home, within the next few years, with make believe stories from other cultures/religions - whether you agree or not!

Parents either need to value all religions (nonsense) or none.

cosysock · 20/12/2018 23:49

I agree with PennyArcade, why pick on Christianity, if you’re against that, you should be against the lot of them. How bloody strange.
