To think closing the door back on an advert calendar is madness

I was discussing this in work today as one of my colleagues mentioned that she opens her advent calendar, removes the chocolate and then re-closes the door.
I said it makes no sense as you don’t know what you have already done. I then admitted I actually rip off the door which was met with a torrent of abuse by four other colleagues, who all return the door to its closed status. One of the reasons being that the picture on the front is messed up. I have to admit I don’t look at the picture as blinded by the excitement of the chocolate inside that awaits me.

Am I adventing all wrong!?

Sorry advent calendar. Arghhh

I'm with your colleague - always close the door back neatly!

Playdonut · 19/12/2018 17:00

Yes you are doing it all wrong. Completely ridiculous behaviour! I have even trained my 3 year old to close the door back up so you have no excuse.

Celebelly · 19/12/2018 17:00

I don't close the door but I also don't rip it off! DP rips it off entirely and I don't approve.

GreenTulips · 19/12/2018 17:00

Yeah close the door -

ClaudiaWankleman · 19/12/2018 17:01

Were you born in a barn? Close the door.

theworldistoosmall · 19/12/2018 17:05

What other doors do you leave open?

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 19/12/2018 17:05

Claudia but baby Jesus was so out of respect for him at Christmas....

Triskaidekaphilia · 19/12/2018 17:06

Whaaaaat? Are you really supposed to close them? But the closed doors tell you how many days til Christmas Confused
Ripping them off however is barbaric! Grin

PristineCondition · 19/12/2018 17:06

Door comes off.

Yanbu. Everyone else is wrong

irregularegular · 19/12/2018 17:07

I've always had picture advent calendars, so of course you leave them open! And yes I'd carry that on to a choc one too. Otherwise it wouldn't feel like you were counting down.

CryingMessFFS · 19/12/2018 17:08

Door stays open. Ripping it off is insane. Closing it is slightly less insane but still wrong!

MeredithGrey1 · 19/12/2018 17:10

Why would you close the doors? Surely you leave them open so you can see as you get nearer Christmas that the calendar is getting more and more open doors and fewer closed ones. It’s like a visual countdown.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 19/12/2018 17:10

Triskaidekaphilia

Good point yes it’s a calendar so it’s main objective is to count down while providing a tasty treat. Closing them back up makes no sense.

Maybe ripping is too far. I may compromise on that.

Doors stay open as a visual indicator of how close it is to Christmas.

Emus · 19/12/2018 17:12

My kids close their doors but I rip mine off. In fact my advent calendar this year has perforated doors that are clearly designed to be ripped off!

TeenTimesTwo · 19/12/2018 17:13

When I was young and all the fields were green the advent calendar had nice pictures behind the doors (and no chocolates). The final doors revealed baby Jesus.
So of course you don't close them, even if now all they reveal is an empty chocolate compartment.

PumpkinKitty82 · 19/12/2018 17:14

My dd 7 closes them back up, drives me mad.
I don’t rip them off but I fold them back so you can see they’re open. Would look messy if you rip them off so I’d hate that even more

ItsJustASimpleLine · 19/12/2018 17:15

Aren't they windows?

Strawberry2017 · 19/12/2018 17:16

I leave the doors open once I've eaten the chocolate x

Celebelly · 19/12/2018 17:16

Also don't advent calendars have pictures as well as choc (or whatever) under the doors? I can't check as mine is upstairs and I'm too pregnant to be going up stairs unnecessarily, but certainly when I was a kid with my Dairy Milk ones, there was always a pic under the doors too.

But YES it's a visual countdown - the more open doors, the closer to Christmas! I've never known anyone to close them before!

Cheesymonster · 19/12/2018 17:17

I leave the doors open otherwise I think there's still chocolate in there and I can't handle the disappointment.

JohnnyKarate · 19/12/2018 17:19

Open!!!

Tighnabruaich · 19/12/2018 17:20

We have one in the office and I was ripping off one of the doors when all hell broke loose from my colleagues, saying you had to open it neatly and nicely and then close it again - apparently I am an animal!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/12/2018 17:21

Yes - the doors got closed when the advent calendar got put away with the decorations until next year.
