Almond 'milk' is a scam

What a joke. 2.3% almonds, water & chemicals, £1.80/litre, works out about £80/kg for the almonds, whereas you can buy almonds in Tesco for under £10/kg, protein content is only 4g/litre, whereas normal 50p/litre cow's milk contains 36g/litre protein.

I was told by one afficionado that it's to reduce bloating when adding to tea? Ok, but that tub of whey protein you have also contains lactose, and you can get lactose-free milk, and buying almost protein-free almond water & then spending £15/tub on 'whey protein' doesn't make too much sense.

....so don't buy it. Hmm

Tigger365 · 18/12/2018 16:42

I only have it when I’m out, same with coconut milk, mainly because costa burn soya milk and I’m lactose intolerant

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 18/12/2018 16:43

A scam that's benefitting....who? The....Almond Mafia?

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 18/12/2018 16:44

Also, have you tried milking an almond? A miserable and thankless task. I, for one, am happy to pay for someone else to bring them in from the fields and attach them all to them little sucky things.

Notacluethisxmas · 18/12/2018 16:45

Not all protein powders have lactose. Isolates don't.

Doyoumind · 18/12/2018 16:45

You do know that the cost of something isn't really related just to the cost of the raw materials, don't you? Also, it's the market that sets the price.

TeenTimesTwo · 18/12/2018 16:45

You need the milk the runner up of The Apprentice is making. It was going to be 15% nut.

Notacluethisxmas · 18/12/2018 16:45

Sorry, totally forgot, yeah almond milk is a rip off

WorraLiberty · 18/12/2018 16:45

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks I find it helps to sit on a very small milking stool.

MulderitsmeX · 18/12/2018 16:46

You can buy "milk" machines where you make "milk" from whatever you like so can make a higher concenteation if needed.

Lacto free is no good for cmpa. I will say though nothing is as nice in tea as real milk. Almond is nice on cereal though and does not go off as quick

MulderitsmeX · 18/12/2018 16:47

teen haha yes i thought of that. At 3 quid a carton Shock

masterandmargarita · 18/12/2018 16:47

I hear bottled water has a high mark up too

FissionChips · 18/12/2018 16:47

Just make it yourself, it’s pretty easy with a cheese cloth and blender, same with oat milk.

pinkdelight · 18/12/2018 16:48

I don't believe in nut milk. It's not milk. Except coconut milk. But then that's not nut. It's all too confusing.

Hillarious · 18/12/2018 16:50

Tea with no milk is actually very nice. As long as people don't squeeze out the tea bag too much. And if it's from a pot, the first cup out is perfect!

Leatherandsilk · 18/12/2018 16:50

Not to mention it’s murdering honeybees and draining California if it’s watertable while ramping up the foodmiles.

Yet everyone who drinks it seems to feel good virtuous? Don’t get it.

QuietContraryMary · 18/12/2018 16:54

Coconut milk is not milk either, it's water and grated coconut flesh.

(BTW I understand some people are genuinely lactose intolerant etc. However in this case the person has definitely got the regular lactose-containing whey concentrate, and not the lactose-free isolate)

I can't stand the stuff but come off it, it's hardly a scam. Unless they are making claims it cures cancer or makes you sprout wings or whatever.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 18/12/2018 16:58

At least they spell it 'milk'. The "mylk" spelling does my head in.

WhatsUpHun · 18/12/2018 16:58

its not the milking thats the problem, its the herding them up to bring them in... tricky little buggers

Puggles123 · 18/12/2018 16:59

It’s not produced in the huge quantities of some other products either, so not as much bulk production and cheaper prices.

Seafoodeatit · 18/12/2018 17:00

It's the nature of the beast with any health fad, all style and the substance is either debatable or missing. A lot of the dairy free milks being touted as healthy are not a good source of minerals and full of sugar so hardly a healthy alternative, not all products are created equally and some are better than others.

SummerGems · 18/12/2018 17:00

Scam is the wrong word here though isn’t it? Bloody extortionate more like, but if you don’t like the price then don’t buy it. It’s not that hard.

deckthehallsred · 18/12/2018 17:02

For those who are lactose intolerant try the a2 cows milk that is now available in some supermarkets, definitely Sainsbury’s. It doesn’t have the a1 protein in it which is what most people are intolerant to.

onalongsabbatical · 18/12/2018 17:02

All those tiny almonds, tramping through the fields mooing their little nuts off...
