Almond 'milk' is a scam

What a joke. 2.3% almonds, water & chemicals, £1.80/litre, works out about £80/kg for the almonds, whereas you can buy almonds in Tesco for under £10/kg, protein content is only 4g/litre, whereas normal 50p/litre cow's milk contains 36g/litre protein.

I was told by one afficionado that it's to reduce bloating when adding to tea? Ok, but that tub of whey protein you have also contains lactose, and you can get lactose-free milk, and buying almost protein-free almond water & then spending £15/tub on 'whey protein' doesn't make too much sense.

We’re just not baby cows so therfore should leave the cows milk for the calves??

I drink cows milk as can't find an alternative I like, but must admit it seems weird to think of it as healthy for kids, it's watery sugary chemicals really.

Spanielmadness · 18/12/2018 18:03

I use it cos I’m too lazy to make my own and I’d rather not drink cows milk. Even in the organic cows milk, there is a quantity of blood and puss from the cows’ infected, over-milked teats, which I’d rather not drink. Non-organic milk contains a lot of antibiotics, due to these infections.

onalongsabbatical · 18/12/2018 18:04

We buy the innocent hazelnut milk. It’s really good on muselli. I MUCH prefer the wicked, guilty, subversive hazelnut milk myself...

BlueJava · 18/12/2018 18:06

Why is it scam? I happen to like it, especially on cereal (I am not intolerant of anything so my consumption isn't based on that). I know what I pay for it and I'm ok with that. I don't think that's a scam at all.

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 18/12/2018 18:10

I buy it because cow's milk brings me out in cystic acne, I don't get on with soya milk and all the other alternatives are minging. I'd rather be drinking cow's milk, believe me!

TigerBreadAddict · 18/12/2018 18:18

I think it's fab.
We have a CMP allergic child who is also allergic to soya.
It's nice on his cereal and we can cook with it eg pancakes. He can have hit chocolate with us.
It's fortified so better in some respects than water.
And now I can buy it all over the place, it was so hard to come by when he was a toddler.

Ravenesque · 18/12/2018 18:20

Alpro do a fantastic hazelnut chocolate "ice-cream".

nomorearsingmermaids · 18/12/2018 18:24

I think all the non dairy alternatives are gross tbh. The only thing I've ever had that I've liked is the rice dream vanilla rice milk.

I have tried to cut down on dairy but it's hard when the alternatives are so vastly inferior!!!

MrsStrowman · 18/12/2018 18:24

@Ravenesque the coconut one is also delicious!

nomorearsingmermaids · 18/12/2018 18:24

Actually I tell a lie, co yo do some little dairy free chocolate pots which are absolutely delicious.

Anniversarysavings · 18/12/2018 18:29

@spanielmadness where did you get that idea from? Have you been in a working dairy? If a cow has mastitis it’s milk doesn’t end up in the food chain - it is milked into a separate tank and dumped, at least in the uk. Milk contaminated with blood and puss is not sold. They can’t stop milking the cows entirely as that wouldn’t help with the infection and would be cruel for the cow, being engorged is no fun, but it’s definitly not used. The same is true of the milk from dairy cows that are on certain medication or have other illnesses, they don’t risk it being introduced into human food products. If you want to look into it more, the government website has the published guidance for dairy farmers on the use of antibiotics during dry periods, and which medications and hormone supplements must be kept out of the chain.

FuckBrussel · 18/12/2018 18:44

If you think it’s a rip off op then don’t use it.

Erm, I don't?

It was a joke.

As you were. Confused

LizzieSiddal · 18/12/2018 18:53

I was in Waitrose today and there were shelives of speciality milks. Almond, coconut, and oat. We don’t have milk in our house, we take tea and coffee black and have granola with yoghurt, but I thought id give it a go as a drink.

I looked at the ingredients and was as shocked as you Op. Basically mostly water, some rice and about 3 almonds.Shock At least they are healthier than most processed rubbishy food.

MrMeSeeks · 18/12/2018 19:40

So what about people who can’t drink normal milk?
‘Vegan scam’ Grin

RrreCansada · 18/12/2018 20:35

But the dairy industry is unbelievably cruel. The more alternatives the better.

HHLimboo · 18/12/2018 20:48

YANBU. If its from nuts... its not milk.

Biologifemini · 18/12/2018 20:52

I drink it and agree it is a scam.
It has very little nutritional value so I think it is awful for children.
It tastes good and I like it but I agree it is also a massive rip off and is very over processed coloured water.

ChesterGreySideboard · 18/12/2018 20:55

I was talking to the op, Fuck about don’t buy it.

formerbabe · 18/12/2018 20:58

Forget almond milk...have you seen the price of almond butter which is apparently all the rage?! I tried some to see what all the fuss is about and was distinctly underwhelmed.

Notanotheruser111 · 18/12/2018 21:02

Almond milk makes the best hot choclates especially when you use a bit of maple sugar as the sweetener. My son has a CMP intolerance and has soy as a substitute but the rest of the kids hate soy so nut ‘milks’ are really good for subbing in dairy recipes and don’t have the distinct soy taste.

BTW cashew milk/cream/icecream is awesome

Raven88 · 18/12/2018 21:03

Tiger nut milk is better than almond, I don't use milk because I prefer the taste of vegan millks. I find milk greasy since switching.

AnotherOriginalUsername · 18/12/2018 21:06

You have no idea how much work goes into milking almonds...

BobbyBanana · 18/12/2018 21:08

@DasPepe they are not the stone of a peach like fruit. They grow as hard shelled nuts/fruits/items whatever you want to call them. I know because we have almond trees.

And as for the 95% water or whatever it was, I can tell you, I've made almond milk at home with our own almonds off the trees and if you don't add enough water you basically have unsugared marzipan. Which nobody wants.

DasPepe · 18/12/2018 21:16

@BobbyBanana but then what grows on the almond tree? Is it not a fruit with soft flesh?
Inside of which there is a stone- the edible part of which is the almond as we know it.

Nuts are ‘fruit’ themselves, albeit hard.

ChesterGreySideboard · 18/12/2018 21:22

Almond is also the name of the edible and widely cultivated seed of this tree. Within the genus Prunus, it is classified with the peach in the subgenus Amygdalus, distinguished from the other subgenera by corrugations on the shell (endocarp) surrounding the seed.

It is a bit like a peach.
