Almond 'milk' is a scam

What a joke. 2.3% almonds, water & chemicals, £1.80/litre, works out about £80/kg for the almonds, whereas you can buy almonds in Tesco for under £10/kg, protein content is only 4g/litre, whereas normal 50p/litre cow's milk contains 36g/litre protein.

I was told by one afficionado that it's to reduce bloating when adding to tea? Ok, but that tub of whey protein you have also contains lactose, and you can get lactose-free milk, and buying almost protein-free almond water & then spending £15/tub on 'whey protein' doesn't make too much sense.

have you tried milking an almond?

Grin Grin Grin

only a special and rare breed of almond are involved anyway.

MrMeSeeks · 18/12/2018 17:03

ascam that's benefitting....who? The....Almond Mafia Grin

starcrossedseahorse · 18/12/2018 17:03

Oat milk is much nicer.

Shambu · 18/12/2018 17:03

I like almond milk I hate animal milk (despite not being a vegetarian).

If you want to make your own almond milk from scratch to save money go right ahead.

QuietContraryMary · 18/12/2018 17:04

I just don't like bollocks 'health' foods that are way less healthy than the normal version.

As much as I love milking each little oat, it is so much simpler to buy a carton of oat milk. I'm just such a slattern Grin

We used the oat milk as one of the best substitutes for CMPA when DS was a toddler. I then realised through the impact on our family's diet that my tolerance to dairy is low, so we continue using it. I find the fact that it is long life and pleasant tasting to be convenient and reduces waste from buying a fresh product.

PatricksRum · 18/12/2018 17:05

@TeenTimesTwo I went on her website, she's now reduced it to about 8% Grin

tellmewhenthespaceshiplands · 18/12/2018 17:05

Hello Camilla Grin

MadeleineMaxwell · 18/12/2018 17:06

Meh, it's a fad (for the non-lactose intolerant among us).

Like coconut water. Suddenly they had all these coconut husks and flesh lying around and, hey presto! Coconut oil is now the bees healthy little knees. Except it isn't cos, yannow, saturated fat.

dorisdog · 18/12/2018 17:09

You know that cows milk is 87% water, right? What a rip off! (and heavily subsidised to keep it cheap, so you're still paying, just in another way...)

dancinfeet · 18/12/2018 17:11

In my house it's not a fad, it's the only milk my daughter can drink. Any animal milk (cow, goat etc) gives her an allergic reaction - not an intolerance but a full blown reaction of hives, throat itching and swelling and vomiting. She is also highly allergic to soya.

She would probably drink oat milk but neither of the supermarkets in our town stock it. To be fair, I don't care too much about the cost or what is in it, if it makes dry breakfast cereal more bearable and her coffee a bit nicer I am happy to buy it for her.

bananamonkey · 18/12/2018 17:12

Ain’t nobody got time to milk their own almonds.

I don’t like cow’s milk or soy milk and it tastes nice in porridge 🤷🏻‍♀️

MrsMWA · 18/12/2018 17:12

Maybe we can get some of the delicious Californian (cheap) almond milk after Brexit. It is so much better quality and taste than any crap produced in Europe. Just sayin’

Mummadeeze · 18/12/2018 17:13

I also have a milk allergy and chocolate almond milk makes me happy every morning with my breakfast. I don’t agree at all that it is a scam!!!

Kikidelivers · 18/12/2018 17:13

I love it! Delicious. Especially the califia brand

QuietContraryMary · 18/12/2018 17:13

Depends which milk you use, I think skimmed is around 9% 'stuff', semi-skimmed 10%, and full-fat 12%. So a fair bit more than the 2.3% with almond milk tbh.

Everything about being a vegan and a veggie is a bloody rip off. Whenever I have vegan guests, I end up paying 2 to 3 times more for their food than anyone else's.

RrreCansada · 18/12/2018 17:16

I think the cows that have their calfs taken away so we can can drink their milk would be greatful!

I prefere rice milk, almonds leave quite a footprint.

Daisychainsandglitter · 18/12/2018 17:16

Both my DDs had CMPA and we use oat milk. By far the nicer of all the dairy alternative milks!

Jackshouse · 18/12/2018 17:18

You can buy lactose free cow’s milk.

LynetteScavo · 18/12/2018 17:18

But I don't want to drink cows milk and DS is vegan, so I don't care if it's "milk" or not, it's tasty and convenient.

What is your opinion on oat milk OP?

QuietContraryMary · 18/12/2018 17:19

Oh yes all a scam the vegan stuff. In Indonesia, tempeh costs about 50p/kilo and chicken is about £1.50/kilo. In the UK tempeh is around £20/kg and chicken is £2/kg

And the source of tempeh? Genetically modified Monsanto US-grown soy beans.

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 18/12/2018 17:19

Great herds of wild almonds, sweeping majestically across the plain.

starcrossedseahorse · 18/12/2018 17:19

Oatley Barista is actually gorgeous in coffee, tea and makes a great hot chocolate.

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 18/12/2018 17:20

But in Indonesia, they use large amounts of tempeh, and don't have to transport it far.

Fruit and veg are fairly cheap last time I looked. No reason to spend 2-3 times your usual amount on vegan food.
