Almond 'milk' is a scam

What a joke. 2.3% almonds, water & chemicals, £1.80/litre, works out about £80/kg for the almonds, whereas you can buy almonds in Tesco for under £10/kg, protein content is only 4g/litre, whereas normal 50p/litre cow's milk contains 36g/litre protein.

I was told by one afficionado that it's to reduce bloating when adding to tea? Ok, but that tub of whey protein you have also contains lactose, and you can get lactose-free milk, and buying almost protein-free almond water & then spending £15/tub on 'whey protein' doesn't make too much sense.

It's nuts (I'll get me coat)

Ohyesiam · 18/12/2018 17:22

It might well be a rip off, but I can’t see how it’s a scam.
I’m allergic to cows milk protein , not lactose, so I’m really glad that plant milks exist.
I don’t usually use almond, but being quite contrary I think I’ll give it a go now.

brizzledrizzle · 18/12/2018 17:22

Personally I love the stuff, the one I buy is sugar free and has more calcium than cows milk. I only drink it as an extra not a substitute.

sittingonacornflake · 18/12/2018 17:23

God I'm hungry. Sorry. Irrelevant I know.

DaysOfCurlySpencer · 18/12/2018 17:23

It must be much more time consuming milking oats though, they are so small.

Or hemp seeds.

And what about the poor baby almonds having to be slaughtered so that their mothers can be impregnated and produce more baby almonds for the milk supply.

ballsdeep · 18/12/2018 17:23

Milking an almond is up there with milking a cat

mumsastudent · 18/12/2018 17:25

going off subject...imagine milking a hamster...

FatherBuzzCagney · 18/12/2018 17:27

I just don't like bollocks 'health' foods that are way less healthy than the normal version

Particularly when they might help send you to hell.

Almond 'milk' is a scam
grumiosmum · 18/12/2018 17:28

I prefer oat milk as a non-diary alternative to cows' milk,

QuietContraryMary · 18/12/2018 17:28

"But in Indonesia, they use large amounts of tempeh, and don't have to transport it far. "

Well they transport the soybeans from America, and then make the tempeh locally, within a few miles of consumption. Not that different from a chicken in the UK or whatever I think?

I used it when I had gestational diabetes, it's very low carb and low sugar, more so than lactose reduced cow's milk. I used the blue diamond almond breeze as it was the lowest carb option and was fortified with calcium. I got my protein from other sources, I just couldn't tolerate cow's milk without my sugar levels going through the roof. It was £1.25-£1.50 a litre. It served its purpose for me and I actually liked the taste, unlike soya milk 🤢

adultcat · 18/12/2018 17:34

How about, just maybe, we're not lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy, we're just not baby cows so therfore should leave the cows milk for the calves??
As demand for milk replacements goes up the prices should come down and be easier to buy.
And I agree, oat milk is much nicer!

YesIDidNameChangeForThis · 18/12/2018 17:35

It's fab if you are calorie counting though....the Alpro unsweetened is only 24 ish cals for 200 mls.

brightstarryeyes · 18/12/2018 17:35

Cor blimey that’s a bit nuts innit

FuckBrussel · 18/12/2018 17:35

They only call it "almond milk" because nobody would buy "nut juice"...

What upsets me most is the way they're treated once they're too old to milk any more. Transported packed together in lorries, cruelly skinned and ground up to be used in Bakewell tarts - it's criminal, I tell ya.

Jaxhog · 18/12/2018 17:38

Also, have you tried milking an almond? A miserable and thankless task. I, for one, am happy to pay for someone else to bring them in from the fields and attach them all to them little sucky things.

Why do you even care?

NotUmbongoUnchained · 18/12/2018 17:41

We buy the innocent hazelnut milk. It’s really good on muselli.

Branleuse · 18/12/2018 17:42

soya milk is no more expensive than cows milk in most supermarkets.

Its not just a choice between cows milk and almond milk. Theres loads of different ones of varying prices and flavours

Almond milk is vile anyway. Who wants marzipan flavoured coffee?. I prefer soya milk or oat milk

SleepySofa · 18/12/2018 17:44

rreCansada Rice milk isn’t great for babies though, because of the arsenic.

Ravenesque · 18/12/2018 17:45

It's very expensive, but it is absolutely fabulous in hot chocolate and great on cereal.

RomanyRoots · 18/12/2018 17:47

I don't see what the scam is? They can't claim it to be something it isn't as the ingredients are on the package. Confused
Don't like it, don't buy it.

ChesterGreySideboard · 18/12/2018 17:48

They only call it "almond milk" because nobody would buy "nut juice"...

But the thing is they don’t call it almond milk.
You are not allowed to write the word milk on any milk substitutes.

If you think it’s a rip off op then don’t use it.

Her0utdoors · 18/12/2018 17:50

And not good for babies because of the low fat content too I'd imagine?

DasPepe · 18/12/2018 17:53

Almonds aren’t nuts.
They are a stone of a peach like fruit.

SleepySofa · 18/12/2018 17:54

We’re just not baby cows so therfore should leave the cows milk for the calves??

Realistically, just how many baby cows (or mummy cows) do you think there would be if humans didn’t drink milk?
