Almond 'milk' is a scam

What a joke. 2.3% almonds, water & chemicals, £1.80/litre, works out about £80/kg for the almonds, whereas you can buy almonds in Tesco for under £10/kg, protein content is only 4g/litre, whereas normal 50p/litre cow's milk contains 36g/litre protein.

I was told by one afficionado that it's to reduce bloating when adding to tea? Ok, but that tub of whey protein you have also contains lactose, and you can get lactose-free milk, and buying almost protein-free almond water & then spending £15/tub on 'whey protein' doesn't make too much sense.

@MrsStrowman, I like that one too and their vanilla! Since discovering them, I find actual ice-cream a bit rich, which is something I thought would never happen!

@ChesterGreySideboard

I was just looking this up. Indeed, a bit like a peach.
Some would say peach - like Grin

If you like nut milk, but are put off by the cost, why not make your own? It is a relatively easy thing to make.

halfwitpicker · 18/12/2018 21:55

Ain’t nobody got time to milk their own almonds.

^^

😂

For PP Aldi own almond butter is much cheaper than other brands and has no palm oil.

gerispringer · 19/12/2018 07:18

Almond milk is 87p in Aldi at the moment. I love it. Would never buy animal milk again, definitely a cruel industry. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Simples.

LizzieSiddal · 19/12/2018 07:20

MumW I heard Catherine Tate on the radio talking about almond milk. She makes her own everyday, using the jamie Oliver recipe.

She said she can’t cook, loves just eating things like cereal for tea, but does make her own Almond milk to put on it.

kmc1111 · 19/12/2018 07:22

How is it a scam?

Yeah, it costs more to buy it pre-packaged. Just like everything else. If for some reason that especially bothers you when it comes to almond milk, just buy some almonds and make your own.

Oblomov18 · 19/12/2018 07:27

It's getting to the stage when you just don't know who to believe. First you are told coconut oil is good. Then you are told almond oil it too high in this and too low in that.
Impossible for the average person to know what they are supposed to be eating.

Avegemitesandwich · 19/12/2018 07:32

Isn't almond growing/almond milk production really bad for the environment?

Biologifemini · 19/12/2018 07:41

It’s a scam in that if you substituted it in your babies bottle or gave it to you child expecting it to have the same nutritional value then you would be being ripped off.

It’s fine if you know what you are drinking, which is basically nicely flavoured coloured water.

Having said that I drink it.

Avegemitesandwich · 19/12/2018 08:11

Yes, none of these drinks are 'milks' and don't have all that much in the way of nutrional value do they? They are essentially flavoured water really.

You’d be more than ripped off if you did that, you’re baby would be malnourished!

Applepudding2018 · 19/12/2018 08:29

I buy almond milk as trying to avoid dairy for animal welfare reasons

LoadOfUtterBoswellocks · 19/12/2018 09:41

It's like milk, but made for humans.

Huggybear16 · 19/12/2018 10:21

How about, just maybe, we're not lactose intolerant or allergic to dairy, we're just not baby cows so therfore should leave the cows milk for the calves??
As demand for milk replacements goes up the prices should come down and be easier to buy.
And I agree, oat milk is much nicer!

And maybe, @adultcat, you should be leaving the oat milk for the baby oats.

FuckBrussel · 19/12/2018 10:27

@Chester, my apologies. Smile

BobbyBanana · 19/12/2018 13:02

Avegemitesandwich why do you think that almond milk has no nutritional value? Would you say the same about eating a bowl of almonds followed by a glass of water?
