To ask you - what actually are "all the trimmings"?!

I see this written down everywhere at this time of year or people describe their Christmas dinners and say "we're having [meat type] and all the trimmings," but what are these mysterious trimmings? If I asked what you're having to eat, I'd actually like to know!
When I was growing up, my grandma made Christmas lunch which was usually turkey, gravy, carrots, peas and mashed potatoes (although I prefer roasted ones now). Other people often had pigs in blankets which I was very envious of!
Whilst I know a lot of people probably don't care, for those of you who are making a Christmas dinner can you tell us what "the trimmings" you will be serving are?

Turkey
Mashed potatoes
Roast potatoes
Carrots
Parsnips
Sprouts
Peas
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Cranberry sauce
Stuffing
Gravy

Leftovers are used to make bubble and squeak and soup the next day.

possumgoddess · 17/12/2018 13:12

Oooo - all the trimmings. In our house it is turkey, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, Brussels sprouts, another couple of vegetables, chestnut stuffing, sausage stuffing or sausages, bacon cooked over the turkey, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, gravy. Other people will add Yorkshire puddings and my OH would love paxo sage and onion stuffing (but I don't like that so he has to do without).

Kismetjayn · 17/12/2018 13:12

We will be having;
Pigs in blankets
Roasties
Swede mash
Carrots & parsnips roasted with red onion
Sprouts
Greens
Stuffing
Yorkshire puddings, for Heathen Man who insists they belong
Bread sauce, gravy & redcurrant jelly
I'm sure there's something I'm forgetting but something has to be forgotten every year or it's not Christmas.

arethereanyleftatall · 17/12/2018 13:12

Our turkey will be stuffed with pork and sage stuffing, I'm doing a cranberry and pomegranate sauce, roast potatoes, Yorkshire puds (no place but we love them), cauliflower cheese, sprouts with chestnuts and bacon, pigs in blankets, carrots, some other veg whatever looks nice, good homemade gravy.

FastnetLundyRockall · 17/12/2018 13:13

Pigs in blankets, stuffing, roast potatoes, bread sauce, cauliflower cheese, Yorkshire pudding, spiced red cabbage, carrots peace or cabbage etc and gravy. Cranberry sauce and selection of mustard

Nomorechickens · 17/12/2018 13:13

Gravy, stuffing, bread sauce, sprouts and chestnuts, roast potatoes, roast parsnips, sausages or pigs in blankets, bacon over the turkey, cranberry sauce. Have I forgotten anything? That doesn't sound enough for the amount of time it takes to prepare.

MysweetAudrina · 17/12/2018 13:13

Stuffing
cranberry sauce
gravy
roast potatoes
roast carrots
brussel sprouts
cauliflower and cheese (controversial I know)
red cabbage
pigs in blankets
mustard ( I do a ham as well as a turkey)

arethereanyleftatall · 17/12/2018 13:14

Thanks for reminder people, add red cabbage to my list.

Redgreencoverplant · 17/12/2018 13:14

Turkey
Veggie alternative
Pigs in blankets
Veggie sausages
Roast potatoes
Honey glazed parsnips and carrots
Brussel sprouts (usually tarted up on some way)
Red cabbage
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Stuffing (veggie)

codenameduchess · 17/12/2018 13:14

I don't really get why 'all the trimmings' is used. Everyone's is so different! I've been in a debate over Yorkshire puddings on Christmas dinner for 3 years now.

For us it's:
Starter:
Prawn cocktail (the classic!) or,
Salmon or chicken snacky bits

Main:
Turkey
Gammon or beer
Roasties
Mash
Pigs in blankets
Sprouts
Carrots
Peas
Broccoli
Cabbage
Chestnuts
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Yorkshire puddings

Pudding:
Christmas pud with cream or custard or,
My grannies traditional Christmas cake (which I honestly have no idea why it's a Christmas thing, it's cream and fruit mostly)
Cheese and crackers

Second pudding:
Mince pies
Those fruit shaped marzipan things
More cheese

our family is all in for Christmas dinner.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 17/12/2018 13:15

Stuffing
Cheesy leeks
Roasted carrots and parsnips
Brussel sprouts
Yorkshire puddings
Gravy

I think that's everything we're having.

Firstaidnovice · 17/12/2018 13:15

Trimmings for us are:
Stuffing
Sausage meat balls
Pigs in blankets
Bread sauce
Parsnip puree

(Those are the things we wouldn't have for a normal roast dinner anyway)

Oysterbabe · 17/12/2018 13:15

Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Roast carrots
Sprouts
Braised red cabbage
Swede and carrot mash
Cauliflower cheese
Sausage meat stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 17/12/2018 13:15

I forgot the roast potatoes.

caperplips · 17/12/2018 13:16

our Christmas dinner usually looks like this:

Starter: seafood / smoked salmon

Main course
Roast turkey
glazed baked ham
sage and onion stuffing
rosemary and garlic roast potatoes
glazed carrots
marrowfat peas
maple roast parsnips
sprouts (maybe!)
gravy
homemade cranberry relish

Dessert:
yule log
sherry trifle

LOTS of wine

Later:
cheese board with walnuts / pears / crackers & port

baileys coffee / chocolates

BrokenWing · 17/12/2018 13:17

To me trimmings are the luxury and larger range of add ons that make it a special meal rather than the usual roast of meat potatoes and 2 veg.

Goose fat roasted potatoes
Sprouts with bacon
Carrots with lashings of butter
Home made Bread sauce and fresh cranberry sauce
Luxury stuffing and sausage meat
Pigs in blankets
Mashed potatoes with loads of butter and double cream
Etc
Etc

caperplips · 17/12/2018 13:17

I forget the red cabbage with the main!!

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 17/12/2018 13:19

We have beef and turkey.

Trimmings are:
goose fat roasties
Yorkshire puds
Mash
Carrots
Cabbage
Roast parsnips
Sprouts
Cauliflower cheese but only the M&S one
Pork, sage and onion stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Cranberry sauce
Horseradish
Gravy

Who eats peas with a roast?! Sacrilege!

Talcott2007 · 17/12/2018 13:19

It varies year by year to a certain extent by who is coming and what personal favourites they have. The 'trimmings' this year will be:
• Stuffing balls
• Pigs in Blankets
• Devils on Horseback
• Both roast & mashed pototo
• Braised Red Cabbage
• Honey roast parsnips, carrots & chestnuts
• Sprouts
• lots of gravy
• crabberry sauce

MumW · 17/12/2018 13:19

Turkey
Roast Potatoes
Roast Parsnips
Selection of veg usually Brussels, peas, carrots, sweetcorn
Proper gravy - made from the giblets
Homemade Stuffing - sage and onion as a minimum
Homemade bread sauce
Pigs in blankets
Cranberry Sauce

IncyWincyGrownUp · 17/12/2018 13:19

Turkey
Roast potatoes
Mash for the two that don’t like roast potatoes
Carrots
Parsnips
Peas
Pigs in blankets
Pork and sage stuffing
Yorkshire puddings for those that want them
All the gravy in the universe

I cook a gammon too, but that doesn’t tend to get breached until Boxing Day.

Kismetjayn · 17/12/2018 13:19

Cauliflower & broccoli cheese! That's what I was forgetting. Thanks all ;)
Now I'll have to forget something else on the day...

Oratorio · 17/12/2018 13:21

This year...

Turkey
Roast potatoes with goose fat
Stuffing
Sprouts
Parsnips
Carrots
Peas
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire pudding
Red cabbage
Gravy
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce

Then afterwards, choice of:
Christmas pudding with brandy butter
Salted caramel chocolate pudding
Cinnamon cheesecake

Later on - a cheese board

MamaLovesMango · 17/12/2018 13:21

It largely depends on the meat but usually:
Roast meat (never turkey)
Roast potatoes
Roast Parsnips
Roast carrots
Green veg of some sort (not broccoli or sprouts!)
Sometimes spiced red cabbage
Roast beetroot
Gravy
Apple sauce/horseraddish/mint sauce/mustard/red current jelly
Fresh stuffing/forcemeat
Pigs in blankets (if we’re not having pork)
Yorkshire puddings (if we’re having beef)
We also eat very late in the day.

Christmas dinner is a minefield in this family.......

MyBreadIsEggy · 17/12/2018 13:22

  • Roast cockerel (no one likes turkey, and it’s bigger than a chicken!)
  • Roast potatoes
  • Mash
  • Roast parsnips
  • Pigs in blankets
  • Steamed carrots, broccoli and sprouts
  • Sage and onion stuffing
  • Yorkshire puddings
  • Gravy

And the best part? I’m not cooking any of it Grin Cheers Mama GrinWine
