To ask you - what actually are "all the trimmings"?!

I see this written down everywhere at this time of year or people describe their Christmas dinners and say "we're having [meat type] and all the trimmings," but what are these mysterious trimmings? If I asked what you're having to eat, I'd actually like to know!
When I was growing up, my grandma made Christmas lunch which was usually turkey, gravy, carrots, peas and mashed potatoes (although I prefer roasted ones now). Other people often had pigs in blankets which I was very envious of!
Whilst I know a lot of people probably don't care, for those of you who are making a Christmas dinner can you tell us what "the trimmings" you will be serving are?

& peppermint tablets before!

usernamerisnotavailable · 17/12/2018 13:42

Were v traditional. No workshire puddings!! We save those for our Boxing Day rib of beet. So we have

Roast turkey
Roast ham
Goose fat roast potatoes
Brussels sprouts with chestnuts and bacon
Red cabbage
Roast parsnips
Peas
Stuffing
Gravy
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Mustard

We have smoked fish to start and Christmas pud following by enormous cheese board.

Plus of course shit tonnes of wine!

AllYeFaithful · 17/12/2018 13:42

Growing up in the 80s my mum made turkey & ham. The 'trimmings' were roast potatoes, roast parsnips, chestnut stuffing, carrots, sprouts & peas with gravy and cranberry sauce.

Since I've had my own family, we go a bit more 'all out' with the trimmings, as I'm (we are all!) greedy Grin. In addition to what my mum would make, we have various types of stuffing, more choice of steamed veg, pigs in blankets, Yorkshire puddings, red cabbage, carrot & swede mash.

Its my favourite meal of the year.

LakieLady · 17/12/2018 13:44

Ours are:

Turkey
Gammon
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Sprouts
Cauliflower cheese
Carrots
Mashed swede
Peas
Yorkshire pudding
Pigs in blankets
Chestnut and sausage meat stuffing
A N Other stuffing
Cranberry sauce
Bread Sauce
Gravy

Christmas pudding with cream and brandy butter

Everything bar the pudding is home-made, although this year we have been discussing having something different for pudding, so pud may well be home-made as well. Unsurprisingly, we don't bother with a starter (unless gin and tonic counts).

We have extra-large dinner plates for Christmas dinner to accommodate it all.

mumsastudent · 17/12/2018 13:45

ps red cabbage in spicy sauce (vinegar & brown sugar with cloves or cardamom) with sultanas (peppermint tea sometime later :) )

RyderWhiteSwan · 17/12/2018 13:45

whiteonesugar · 17/12/2018 13:50

Meat wise we are having goose, a small turkey joint and gammon.

Trimmings;

Sprouts with chestnuts and bacon
Roast potatoes
Red Cabbage
Roast Parsnips
Carrots
Peas
Gravy
Pigs in Blankets
Fancy sausagemeat stuffing
Bread sauce
Cranberry Sauce

YUM.

MorrisZapp · 17/12/2018 13:50

I'm Scottish. Had never heard of pigs in blankets until the Internet was invented. We have skirlie, which is stuffing made from oatmeal.

My family also have thin gravy, which I love. Can't stand the gloopy type made with thickeners.

Mooey89 · 17/12/2018 13:50

Christmas pudding with brandy cream for pudding obviously

Aridane · 17/12/2018 13:50

These are my trimmings - www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/302065553

Perfect!

user1474894224 · 17/12/2018 13:51

No idea. My oh does dinner and we get what he serves up. Typically 2 veg, Yorkshire, potatoes. He doesn't go massively overboard on trimmings. We don't miss them. Still have a nice meal. There are only 8 of us to eat so don't need too much food.

PetuliaBlavatsky · 17/12/2018 13:51

Ooh this is a handy place to make a list to remind me what I need on my shopping delivery.

Roast potatoes (in goose fat and veggie version)
Honey roast parsnips
Carrots
Carrot & swede mash
Braised red cabbage
Sprouts
Cauliflower cheese
Yorkshire puds
Pigs in blankets
Chestnut stuffing
A veggie main (nut roast or similar)
Turkey
Cranberry sauce
Gravy (veggie and normal)

Christmas pudding
Mince pies
Pannetone
Chocolate cake

It's a bit of a pain catering for equal numbers of carnivores and veggies as we have to double up on roast potatoes and make sure there is veggie gravy etc

Aridane · 17/12/2018 13:51

So basically

Roasting Potatoes Cooked potatoes with butter ready for roasting.

Cauliflower Cheese Cauliflower florets in a cheese sauce topped mature vegetarian Cheddar cheese.

Honey Roasting Parsnips Parsnips with honey butter

. Peas & Carrots Peas and carrots with a herb infused butter. Red Cabbage & Apple

Shredded red cabbage, apple and redcurrant jelly with red wine and spices.

Brussels Sprouts with Bacon Brussels sprouts and smoked bacon with a herb butter.

Thank you, Tesco Smile

foxtiger · 17/12/2018 13:52

I think the trimmings are the things that go along with the meat, rather than the vegetables. To me, the classic ones for Christmas dinner would be stuffing and either pigs in blankets or separate small sausages and bacon curls. They are the parts of the meal that I rarely eat at any other time. (Yes, I am that rare beast that enjoys both parsnips and sprouts when it's not Christmas time.)

moredoll · 17/12/2018 13:53

brussel sprouts
roast potatoes
roast parsnips
red cabbage
chipolatas (so pigs without blankets)
sausage, sage and onion stuffing
chestnut stuffing
gravy
cranberry sauce
bread sauce (not for me thanks)

@MyBreadIsEggy devils on horseback are prunes wrapped in bacon. They're much, much nicer than they sound.

MrsCharlesBrandon · 17/12/2018 13:53

Turkey
Pork
Pigs in Blankets
Stir fried sprouts and onions
'Santa's' mash (aka root veg mash)
Roast potatoes
Roast Parsnips
Broccoli
Carrotts
Gravy
Cranberry sauce
Apple Sauce
Sausagemeat stuffing

Meat sweats.

lubeybooby · 17/12/2018 13:53

when I do xmas dinner I feel I overdo it a bit but the leftovers last a fair while and I do fairly small portions of each thing per person

main item - turkey or duck

gravy
pigs in blankets
stuffing
red cabbage
roasted sprouts
roasted parsnips
bread sauce
yorkshire puds
cranberry sauce
cauliflower cheese
roast potatoes
mashed potatoes

then

xmas pudding,
mince pies,
cheeses
brandy sauce/butter

Mayrhofen · 17/12/2018 13:55

Turkey
Fillet of beef (you can have either or both)
beef gravy, chicken gravy
roast potatoes
spouts with chestnuts and bacon
carrots
petit pois
parsnips
apple sauce
cranberry sauce
stuffing
pigs in blankets

I think that's it, less is more!

MrsCar · 17/12/2018 13:56

Gravy
Sauces
Carrots
Brocolli & sprouts
Red cabbage
Stuffing
Mashed potatoes
Roast potatoes
Red or white wine

Homemade dessert, homemade chocolate sauce
Ice cream

We'd never bother with any of that throughout the year, and dessert wouldn't usually be homemade.
That's why I say 'all the trimmings'

Mumsnut · 17/12/2018 13:57

All of the above - plus cauliflower cheese
