To ask you - what actually are "all the trimmings"?!

I see this written down everywhere at this time of year or people describe their Christmas dinners and say "we're having [meat type] and all the trimmings," but what are these mysterious trimmings? If I asked what you're having to eat, I'd actually like to know!
When I was growing up, my grandma made Christmas lunch which was usually turkey, gravy, carrots, peas and mashed potatoes (although I prefer roasted ones now). Other people often had pigs in blankets which I was very envious of!
Whilst I know a lot of people probably don't care, for those of you who are making a Christmas dinner can you tell us what "the trimmings" you will be serving are?

Turkey, chicken, pork.
Roast potatoes, carrots, pumpkin and parsnips.
Peas, carrots, corn on the cob, sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower cheese. Gravy and stuffing.
Looks like so much written down. Mum wouldn't have it any other way though!

plain stuffing
sausage stuffing
gravy

Christmas pudding & custard
Roulade

wink1970 · 17/12/2018 14:02

Our Christmas lunch is the same as our normal Sunday Lunch, which is usually:

Poultry of some kind (Christmas we do those 3- or 5- bird thingies)
Roast potatoes
Sprouts & carrots, probably roasted
Parsnips
Yorkshire puds (travesty, I know)
Gravy made with Madeira
...all home-made & the bird from M&S usually

I would much prefer to do beef and if it's turkey I insist on a 2-day brine, but other than that it's a simple thing to cook so I can get tipsy enjoy the rest of the day.

Now Boxing Day, that's another story ......

BigRedBoat · 17/12/2018 14:03

Roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, carrots, parsnips, red cabbage, sprouts, stuffing, nice gravy....it's making me hungry just thinking about it!

BrieAndChilli · 17/12/2018 14:04

The trimmings are

Meat - normally a turkey and 1 other meat such as beef or ham

Potatoes - Roast and then mash or boiled

Veg - Parsnips, sprouts, red cabbage and then a variety of broccoli, peas, mashed swede, cabbage, cauliflower cheese ec

Sauces - Gravy, Bread sauce if having turkey, cranberry sauce

Extras - pigs in blankets, stuffing, yorkshire puddings

In out house it's:
Pigs in blankets
Brussel sprouts
Spiced red cabbage
Parsnips with maple syrup
Garlic and coriander carrots
Yorkshire puddings
Roast potatoes
2 x gravy (meat and veggie)

If I had infinite time and space I'd do cauliflower cheese too.

JingsMahBucket · 17/12/2018 14:30

@AndThereSaw
Basically our Christmas dinner is a feast of pork products masquerading as turkey trimmings!!

I was wondering when somebody was going to fess up and own up to it. Grin As I was reading through all the lists I noticed the prevalence of pork and started thinking, "How many ways can you stuff pork into or next to a bird??" Grin

SimplyPut · 17/12/2018 14:35

Turkey
Ham
Pigs in blankets
Stuffing (pork and sage)
Roast potatoes
Dauphinois potatoes
Glazed carrots
Roast parsnips
Red cabbage
Stir fried sprouts
Gravy

Mummaloves · 17/12/2018 14:37

Turkey & Beef & Gammon
Roast potatoes
Mashed potatoes
Brussels
Peas
Brocolli
Parsnips & Carrots (only if we have visitors as we don’t like them)
Cauliflower cheese
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puds
Stuffing, sage and onion or sausagemeat
Gravy
Crackers !

With the exception of pigs in blankets we have the rest most Sundays so not much difference really.

Nodnol · 17/12/2018 14:40

I’m in Australia so ours is a little different I expect.

Turkey
Roast potatoes
Roast pumpkin
Peas
Gravy
Scotch eggs
Cold ham
Potato salad
Prawns
Tossed salad
Hard boiled eggs

Dessert is
Eton mess
Pavlova
Christmas pudding w brandy custard

We like the mix because if it’s hot we can have mainly cold food, but if the weather is milder the hot meal is perfect.

AGnu · 17/12/2018 15:25

At our house we have:
Turkey
Ham
Sausage meat
Pigs in blankets
Something for the resident veggie
Roasties
Parsnips
Sprouts w/ chestnuts
Peas
Carrot & swede mash
Corn
Another fancified veg my mum's discovered during the year that never seems to quite go
Stuffing (veggie & proper)
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Red currant jelly
Gravy (veggie & proper)

Desserts are mince pies & Christmas pudding plus something chocolatey for those who don't like either.

Seems like a lot when it's written down but there will be at least 20 of us!

Sweetooth92 · 17/12/2018 15:32

For us we have
Turkey-stuffed and rolled and with bacon
Glazed gammon
Pigs in blankets
Yorkshire puddings
Mashed potatoes
Roast potatoes
Brussels
Roast carrots and parsnips
Stuffing
Cauliflower cheese
Cranberry sauce
Gravy

One year my mum tried to refuse to do Yorkshire puddings, my husband and brother went on like it was literally the end of the earth as we know it and Christmas was ruined and she daren’t even suggest it again 😂 I’ve never seen such outrage

halfwitpicker · 17/12/2018 15:36

It just sounds so good : trimmings

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 17/12/2018 15:58

Christmas Lunch.
Roast turkey crown (stuffed with sage and onions stuffing and sausage meat), pigs in blankets, roast pots and snips, roast peppers, onions and sweet pots (3 done together in hot air fryer), sprouts (mixed with chopped up bacon from the top of the turkey), steamed mange toutes, cauliflower and broccoli, carrots done with a cartouche and sugar and butter, gravy and bread sauce. No one likes cranberry sauce or there’d be that too!

concretesieve · 17/12/2018 16:09

Brown bread and butter and smoked salmon

Turkey
Chipolatas
Bacon rolls
Sage and onion stuffing
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Roast spuds and parsnips
Carrots and sprouts
Lots of gravy

Christmas pud and brandy sauce
Water biscuits and blue stilton

White wine and port

If I HAD to give something up it'd be the turkey.

Pandoraslastchance · 17/12/2018 16:29

Turkey
Roast potatoes
Bacon rolls
Pigs in blankets
Sausagemeat
Sage and onion stuffing
Roast carrots
Peas
Sweetcorn
Broccoli
Yorkshire puddings

I might add some cauliflower cheese this year.

Christmas cake and Christmas pudding available but no one ever manages it.
Then it's normally a buffet for a late tea

Pandoraslastchance · 17/12/2018 16:30

And roast parsnips!!! And bacon and Brussel sprouts.

SilverySurfer · 17/12/2018 16:56
