To ask you - what actually are "all the trimmings"?!

I see this written down everywhere at this time of year or people describe their Christmas dinners and say "we're having [meat type] and all the trimmings," but what are these mysterious trimmings? If I asked what you're having to eat, I'd actually like to know!
When I was growing up, my grandma made Christmas lunch which was usually turkey, gravy, carrots, peas and mashed potatoes (although I prefer roasted ones now). Other people often had pigs in blankets which I was very envious of!
Whilst I know a lot of people probably don't care, for those of you who are making a Christmas dinner can you tell us what "the trimmings" you will be serving are?

OP posts:

LOL what a bizarre question from the OP.

Post 2 (on page 1,) pretty much covered it.

We have a spiral ham on Christmas. The trimmings will be funeral potatoes (cheesy potatoes), cranberry applesauce, roasted Brussels sprouts, sweet potato casserole, Kings Hawaiian rolls, sparkling grape juice then later pumpkin pie with squirty cream, butter tarts, snickerdoodles and cranberry bread.

I am doing:

Starter;
Smoked salmon and cream cheese on blinis with lemon and dill. Plus some of those salmon canapes from Tesco with fillings.

Main;
Beef and pork (as not many like turkey). Both from the butcher and they are always lovely.
Carrots
Sprouts
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Red cabbage
Stuffing (made by SIL who does awesome stuffing!)
Horseradish and Apple sauce
Gravy made with beef juices and red wine

Christmas pudding and brandy sauce

Maybe cheese if anyone is still hungry!

"Good" gravy
Roast potatoes
Roast parnsips
Honeyed carrots
Broccolli or peas
Stuffing
Some sort of sauce (cranberry/mint etc depending on meat)

Skipuation · 19/12/2018 19:39

@Twuntsrule that all sounds delish yum. Apart from the dubious marzipan tower.

ChocolateTearDrops · 19/12/2018 19:45

Yorkshire pud, sage & onion stuffing, sprouts, parsnips, mashed swede, carrots, broccoli, cauli, pigs in blankets, roast tates, mashed tates, gravy. Under all that we hide some meat, too. Grin

concretesieve · 19/12/2018 19:54

AIUI, gammon would be your baked ham. Swede is rutibaga, bread sauce is a white sauce mixed with breadcrumbs; runner beans are much bigger, flatter green beans

Roast turkey
Baked ham
Roast parsnips and carrots
Brussel sprouts
Red cabbage
Peas
A few different stuffings
Yorkshire puddings
Pigs in blankets
Bread sauce

Delicious!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 19/12/2018 20:10

“All the trimmings” to me means what you wouldn’t normally have or bother with with a roast lunch. So, pigs in blankets, stuffing, Bread sauce, cranberry sauce.

The roast potatoes and veggies I would have any other Sunday lunch anyway. Except for sprouts. No-one likes them but me. They form part of the “trimmings” in our house!

lborgia · 19/12/2018 21:24

I might of missed a page or two, but think ours is probably a bit over the top. Problem is, the minute you try and streamline the menu toy just keep thinking of the dishes you've left out!

Turkey (covered in bacon to cook, and served with watercress)
Roast potatoes
Parmesan Parsnips
Carrots
Peas
Chestnut stuffing
Pork apple stuffing
Stuffing balls
Red cabbage
Pigs in blankets
Brussel sprouts with bacon and chestnuts
Bread sauce
Cranberry sauce
Gravy

All made from scratch. I have now settled on doing everything, or nothing at all. I cannot do a pared down version.

Twuntsrule · 20/12/2018 03:40

Thank you, @concretesieve and @Skipuation!

Yes, that marzipan tower was awful and a total waste of money, as only a few people ever broke off a piece.

Both meals were/are delicious. We now do the steaks as we can fit around a table now and the eldest person is 63, so we’re down a generation or two.

I love how so many of you do roasted root veg. So delicious! I think they’re becoming more popular here in the States. Our Trader Joe’s (div. of Aldi) has lots of them, already peeled and cubed, for ease of use. I understand you can lose a finger trying to cut/peel things like turnips!

Again, Happy Crimble to all!

Lolly86 · 20/12/2018 03:53

Beef (no one really wants turkey in this house)
Veggie alternative - haven't decided what i fancy yet...
Pigs in blankets
Veggie sausages
Roast potatoes and mashed potatoes
Roasted parsnips
Peas
Carrots
Yorkshire puddings
Stuffing
Cranberry sauce
Pickled red cabbage
Pickled onions
Maybe some cauliflower cheese
Gravy

Yule Log
Trifle
Cream
Xmas Smile

Lolly86 · 20/12/2018 03:54

Oooh forgot the sprouts and maybe some chicken foe the meat eaters

Cornishclio · 20/12/2018 04:32

This is normally what I would do. Having Xmas dinner at my DD2s this year but I expect many will still be on the list. Just a roast really with a few extras

Turkey or chicken as most of us prefer that
Ham
Sausages
Pigs in blankets
Roast potatoes
Roast parsnips
Yorkshire puddings
Stuffing balls
Sprouts
Peas
Carrots
Broccoli
Cranberry sauce
Bread sauce
Gravy

Louby6 · 20/12/2018 04:56

Hi, can I just ask what pigs in blankets are and why does everyone have them with their turkey ? Other side of the world so don’t understand this custom sorry😩

JingsMahBucket · 20/12/2018 06:14

@Louby6 the U.K. version people talk about here is little sausages wrapped in bacon. The American version, pigs in a blanket, is little sausages wrapped in pastry. The American version makes way more sense to me.

See attached photos.

To ask you - what actually are "all the trimmings"?!
