To ask you - what actually are "all the trimmings"?!

I see this written down everywhere at this time of year or people describe their Christmas dinners and say "we're having [meat type] and all the trimmings," but what are these mysterious trimmings? If I asked what you're having to eat, I'd actually like to know!
When I was growing up, my grandma made Christmas lunch which was usually turkey, gravy, carrots, peas and mashed potatoes (although I prefer roasted ones now). Other people often had pigs in blankets which I was very envious of!
Whilst I know a lot of people probably don't care, for those of you who are making a Christmas dinner can you tell us what "the trimmings" you will be serving are?

This thread has made me very hungry.
Cauli cheese and Yorkshire puddings are controversial additions on DH's request. I wouldn't be including them if not for him.

DitheringBlidiot · 17/12/2018 20:36

At Christmas:

Meat
Gravy
Cauliflower cheese
Sprouts
Carrots
Broccoli
Parsnips
Roast potatoes
Yorkshire puddings
Stuffing
Pigs in blankets
Cranberry sauce for those who like it

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 17/12/2018 21:15

Cauliflower cheese on one side then a barrier of vegetables other stuff and gravy on the other side. No need for the two sauces to ever meet.

Wooooooooaaaaaaaahhhhhhh · 17/12/2018 21:20

I hate the phrase ‘all the trimmings’. There’s something really annoying about it.

Like you’re just going to have turkey on it’s own. As if the fact you’ve served potatoes and veg is somehow special.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/12/2018 21:37

I always assumed trimmings were stuffing, cranberry sauce (or other?) pigs in blankets.

when I am cooking I like to do a variety of roast veg: carrots, parsnips, courgettes, peppers, cherry tomatoes, mushrooms, onions, sweet potatoes for ex.

two sorts of stuffing for christmas day lovingly hand crafted from a packet

yorkshire puddings from the freezer will do

veggie sausages ,though I used to like pigs in blankets,

I like cauliflower and broccoli cheese.

not all of it gets cooked on Christmas day, but will do some one day and keep til next and reheat, and then add an extra or two.

BlackeyedGruesome · 17/12/2018 21:42

and when I do dinner I do chicken. we do not eat a lot of meat, and we are probably the only people who actually do the mumsnet magic chicken. (parents brought up in the war and so ration sized portions were their norm... )
chicken was added as flavouring to various other dishes. (because you really do not need that much protein per day, a lot less than I imagined anyway)

dd will not eat chicken, and is going towards pescatarian

ds would now eat a whole chicken himself, though he was veggie for a year.

this year we will be eating turkey all being well.

Peas Shock

LittleLlamaontheduskyroad · 17/12/2018 21:49

On a normal sunday roast:
One type of potato - usually roast or mash as I'm not a fan of boiled.
At least two, if not three types of veg - varies, depending on what we've got in / what was on offer
Occasionally yorkshires or stuffing
Gravy
Condiments - mustard, mint sauce, apple sauce, etc etc.

On Christmas dinner:
Meat of some kind - never turkey as we don't like it
Two types of potato - roast & mash, sometimes dauphinoise or duchesse
Pigs in blankets
Sprouts - usually made with chestnuts & bacon
Peas, we're all about the peas in this house
Roast parsnips
Roast carrots
Spiced red cabbage
Stuffing
Gravy
Condiments - mustard / sauce etc.

SaucyJack · 17/12/2018 21:52

For us, "all the trimmings" means turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, some sort of cooked veggies, cranberry sauce, and bread. Usually a salad in there too.

I live in Canada and while you can buy Yorkshire pudding mix and find recipes for it, it's not really a thing here. I do know what Yorkshire pudding is and have eaten it (and quite like it), but it's not common.

We use the term "pudding" differently here. To us, pudding is more similar to custard. It's not made with flour.

agnurse · 17/12/2018 23:58

Forgot to add turkey stuffing. My mum's recipe is AMAZING. She adds twice the amount of spice that the recipe says, and she makes it a day ahead and puts it in the fridge. This way the spices really soak into the bread.

Canuckduck · 18/12/2018 00:06

Shrimp and smoked salmon in the afternoon

Turkey
Sausage stuffing
Cheesy potato casserole
Sprouts
Roast carrots, parsnips, onion

Twuntsrule · 19/12/2018 18:42

Please, could someone explain to this "ungrateful colonial" in New York what is gammon, bread sauce, Swede Mash, and runner beans?
Growing up, our Christmas was a buffet courtesy of my Scandinavian grandmother:
Swedish Meatballs (of course!)
Baked ham (shank portion)
Mixed vegetable salad (steamed then chilled frozen mixed veggies tossed in a sauce made from mayo/yogurt/sour cream and dill
Pot of baked beans
Lingonberries
Peas with creamed pearl onions.
Dessert was usually a variety of cakes until my mother started going to Olsen's Bakery in Brooklyn for a Norwegian marzipan tower (yuck)
One year my other made very authentic glugg with Aalborg Akvavit, but it was then banned from Christmas as too many people got trashed.

Now with the older generation no longer with us, things have changed. This Christmas, the menu will be:
Porterhouse (t-bone) steaks
Sauce Bearnaise
Roasted sweet and white potatoes
Roasted sprouts with bacon and shallots
Salad
I've demanded appetizer-sized Swedish meatballs to keep that tradition alive!
Dessert never a big thing, but sometimes we have homemade cinnamon frozen yogurt and a couple of pies.

Happy Crimble to all of my Mumsnet/AIBU friends! And TIA for the answers to my initial question!
