Help settle a discussion between DH and I please!

I pronounce it as 'Pro-ven'
DH says its 'Proo-ven'

I am Scottish, he is South African, whether that makes a difference!

At the sort of party where everyone endlessly bangs on about whether it's scown or scone, you're right, I'm an absolute riot.

MaggieAndHopey · 21/12/2018 13:44

Also see: loo roll - which way should it hang? Trousers: right way up or upside down on the washing line? Tea before milk or milk before tea? And so on and so forth. All conversational topics likely to send my thoughts towards existential gloom.

TheWomanTheyCallJayne · 23/12/2018 17:33

I’ve never heard anything except proo, which I find weird as I’m normally quite good about knowing and understand various dialects and accents.
I’ve realised I’ve spent the whole time reading the Scots version as pro with the o as in octopus when it could be pro as in professional. Which is it please?

AnOtherNomdePlume · 23/12/2018 17:43

Pro like dough.

Sparkles07 · 23/12/2018 17:46

Proo-Ven in the midlands, never heard anyone say pro-ven and would probably correct them if they did

CandyCreeper · 23/12/2018 17:46

prooven, london. never heard it said any other way.

IHopeThisIsAGoodIdea · 23/12/2018 17:52

OP. Both pronunciations are sort of correct, although your pronunciation of "proe-v'n" is really only correct when said by Scottish people and within Scotland.

@Bluebell878275

"Prooven..raised in S.A with English parents. Always thought pro-ven was American like 'or-ral'."

We pronounce it "proo-v'n" in the US. Mostly used when saying someone is "Innocent until proven guilty."

Now100 · 23/12/2018 17:58

I do wonder about people who announce one pronunciation is "right". It's almost as if they think everyone in the UK speaks with the same accent.

Sexnotgender · 23/12/2018 18:03

Pro-ven, I’m Scottish.

limitedperiodonly · 23/12/2018 18:06

I'd say 'proo' but understand that Scots say 'pro'. Neither is wrong or right.

However you lost me when you asked me to settle a discussion between 'DH and I.'

It's 'DH and me' so your argument falls down right there.

I read the thread up to the fifth page and no one had pointed that out. Maybe they did afterwards.

I am a pedant

katekat383 · 23/12/2018 18:38

Somebody else pointed that out. Clearly, you are not the only pedant.

However, he pro v proo pronunciation is the OP’s query. Let’s keep the focus in that.

I am a pedant too - fwiw.Hmm

StarsAndWater · 25/12/2018 12:48

Never occurred to me that anyone would say anything other than proo-ven. How curious.

pontiouspilates · 25/12/2018 12:50

Pro-ven - London

katekat383 · 26/12/2018 11:16

Autocorrect makes my mistakes. Actually.
