Help settle a discussion between DH and I please!

I pronounce it as 'Pro-ven'
DH says its 'Proo-ven'

I am Scottish, he is South African, whether that makes a difference!

I used to say pro-ven but noticed in recent years most people say proo-ven: I think I say it both ways nowadaysHmm

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 17/12/2018 09:26

Oh btw, the only time I've ever heard Pro-ven is on a documentary with that DR Lesley Rosen obstetrician

FestiveLemur · 17/12/2018 09:40

Er... "PROOV'n"

TheWiseWomansFear · 17/12/2018 09:41

Pretty sure it's Pro-Ben in legal speak but everyone in England says Prooven generally

TheWiseWomansFear · 17/12/2018 09:41

Pro-Ben

TheWiseWomansFear · 17/12/2018 09:41

Ffs

ElusiveButterfly · 17/12/2018 11:27

Nope, myself and Scottish DH day 'prooven', never heard it said otherwise Shock

DonDrapersOldFashioned · 17/12/2018 11:29

I say oo but couldn’t really say I’d get myself in a tizzy if someone say it the other way to me.

DioVelazquez · 17/12/2018 11:31

So basically, it's a Scottish pronunciation. Simple as that.

Dimsumlosesum · 17/12/2018 11:34

Everyone I know and have ever known, apart from my mum who can be a bit stuck up, says "proo-ven". She says "pro-ven".

Onemorefireball · 17/12/2018 11:37

Proo-ven (Somerset)

KurriKurri · 17/12/2018 11:44

I'm from Dorset - I say pro -ven, as do other people I know from the South. I don't think it's a Scottish thing, I think it's a 'lots of people pronounce it incorrectly i.e. prooven' thing Grin

missclimpson · 17/12/2018 11:54

Sout-east England and I would say, "the verdict is not pro-ven" and "he is a proo-ven liar". 😊

lilyheather1 · 17/12/2018 11:55

Kent, proo-ven

Wrybread · 17/12/2018 11:59

I have both English and Scottish influences and say something between pro-ven and proo-ven so it can be taken either way Grin

MissSingerbrains · 17/12/2018 12:14

Depends on context. I say proo-ven in “It’s been scientifically proven” and pro-ven when I did jury service (in Scotland) Confused

Butchyrestingface · 17/12/2018 12:24

Pro-ven.

Also Scottish.

Ignore everyone else, OP. It's our verdict. We is right.

NonExistentFox · 17/12/2018 12:51

Pro-ven
(posh)

Trinity66 · 17/12/2018 12:53

Proo-ven (Irish)

AdaColeman · 17/12/2018 12:55

Pro-ven ~ not Scottish.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 17/12/2018 13:01

Pro-ven is correct, though proo-ven is also acceptable these days.

What's your source for this?

The Cambridge dictionary says "prooven" ...

foxtiger · 17/12/2018 13:06

I've only ever heard it as proo-ven (including in lots of TV ads) but I hate the word anyway. It feels archaic - don't most normal people say "proved"?

BerylStreep · 17/12/2018 13:07

Definitely pro-ven. NI.

The argument about the pronunciation of proof therefore leading to the pronunciation of prooven just doesn't stack up. Otherwise it would be spelt prooven.
