Help settle a discussion between DH and I please!

I pronounce it as 'Pro-ven'
DH says its 'Proo-ven'

I am Scottish, he is South African, whether that makes a difference!

Having had a cursory Google, it appears that it's proo-ven in England, but pro-ven is a Scottish legal term and the English who say pro-ven are copying the Scots. I shall have a further Google later to check if that's correct though. My search is hampered at present by a sleeping infant, preventing audio file use.

ApolloandDaphne · 17/12/2018 13:09

Pro-ven. Scottish.

BerylStreep · 17/12/2018 13:15

Ignore that last one - not really concentrating.

According to the Oxford dictionary, it can be either oo as in too, or o as in no.

Rumboogie · 17/12/2018 23:00

Proo-ven. This is the pron. according to the OED. Pro-ven is Scottish Legal, which has begun to infiltrate common usage, leading to a more recent pronunciation.

BerylStreep · 17/12/2018 23:59

Rumboogie My OED shows both pronunciations.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 19/12/2018 07:44

So your bread has prooven
But you have pro-ven your point about having an accent op 🤷🏻‍♀️

CombinationOfWords · 19/12/2018 07:51

Prooven

Nenic · 19/12/2018 08:08

I’m Scottish and I say prooo-ven

SoupDragon · 19/12/2018 08:14

I am English and use Prooven unless it's the Scottish "not proven" verdict when it is pro-ven.

How do people say prove? Is that always proove or is there a pro-ve version in some accents?

SoupDragon · 19/12/2018 08:14

(I did skim ththread to see if that had been answered but might have missed it)

TeeniefaeTroon · 19/12/2018 08:16

Pro-ven, I'm also Scottish

chaoscategorised · 19/12/2018 08:23

I say proo-ven. I'm amazed as I didn't realise people pronounced it any other way - the intricacies of the English language eh?

It’s proo-ven. You don’t say prov instead of prove.

BerylStreep · 19/12/2018 09:34

But Margot, someone made the point earlier with drive and driven. The root word with the same spelling, but pronounced differently.

I think the same can be is true with prove and proven.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 19/12/2018 09:43

I say Proo-.ven.

Unless I'm using it in the expression "Not Proven!" When I use a Scottish Pro- ven, like the linguistic wanker I am!

I am English but have lived in Scotland and know and use that phrase.

AnOtherNomdePlume · 19/12/2018 09:44

So I would definitely say "the technology is unPROOven."

AnOtherNomdePlume · 19/12/2018 09:45

I'm wondering what they say in Canada?

RedDwarves · 19/12/2018 09:46

It's proo-ven in Australia.

Proo as in Prue.

littlemeitslyn · 19/12/2018 11:30

Pro - ven is correct

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 19/12/2018 11:50

Pr-oh-ven.

Avrannakern · 19/12/2018 11:51

Proven. Scottish.

Avrannakern · 19/12/2018 11:52

*pro-ven!

firstbrightday · 19/12/2018 12:38

Proo-ven. Didn't even know pro-ven was an option!

SoupDragon · 19/12/2018 17:58

Pro - ven is correct

Prove it.
