Help settle a discussion between DH and I please!

I pronounce it as 'Pro-ven'
DH says its 'Proo-ven'

I am Scottish, he is South African, whether that makes a difference!

Scottish west coast, pronounce it Pro-ven

blueberrygoose · 16/12/2018 21:31

Pro-ven, I'm Scottish too!!

TinkerSpy · 16/12/2018 21:31

'Proo-ven' from Gloucestershire.

AppleJuiceFlood · 16/12/2018 21:31

Pro-ven here too. I’m also Scottish

CollyWombles · 16/12/2018 21:31

So we are both right really then, in Scotland it's Pro-ven, everywhere else it's Proo-ven!

Pro-ven. Also Scottish. Would never hear anyone here say proo-ven!

2cats2many · 16/12/2018 21:32

I say proov-ven, but they say pro-ven on Radio 4 all the time.

NoWordForFluffy · 16/12/2018 21:32

The dictionary says it's 'pru:ven'. So, 'proo'.

How do you say 'prove'. If that's with 'proo', then why would 'proven' not follow the same pronunciation?

I say 'proo' and am East Mids'-born, living in the NW.

TooMinty · 16/12/2018 21:32

Also Scottish and also pro-ven. And I have never heard anyone say proo-ven. Even when living in Manchester.

bridgetreilly · 16/12/2018 21:32

Pro-ven is correct, though proo-ven is also acceptable these days.

ShatnersBassoon · 16/12/2018 21:32

It has the 'oo' sound in for me. I'm not going to make proven sound different to proved and proving.

Dariosa · 16/12/2018 21:32

And proof!

Yabbers · 16/12/2018 21:32

Pro-ven. As in the legal verdict not pro-ven. If it’s good enough for the law, it’s good enough for me!

OED has both, so either is correct.

Poshjock · 16/12/2018 21:33

Pro-ven for me too. Scottish obvs.

Ohyesiam · 16/12/2018 21:33

Pro-ven, prooooooven is a mispronunciation.
From London btw, but glad I’m aligned with all the Scots posters.

Chocolatedeficitdisorder · 16/12/2018 21:33

Another Pro-ven Scot.

borntobequiet · 16/12/2018 21:33

Either will do - both are correct -but it’s “between DH and me”.

RockingAroundTheChristmasTree1 · 16/12/2018 21:34

Proo-ven from Cheshire

katekat383 · 16/12/2018 21:34
HildaZelda · 16/12/2018 21:34

I say proo-ven. I have literally never heard anyone say pro-ven.

Larasshadow · 16/12/2018 21:34

I listen to radio 4 and never heard pro-ven.. I must listen more carefully.

Proo-ven down here in Kent.

BeanTownNancy · 16/12/2018 21:35

It's proo-ve it with proo-f until it is proo-ven, surely?!

FishFingersAndCustard11 · 16/12/2018 21:35

Proo-ven Bristol area

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 16/12/2018 21:35

Onebrokentoe · 16/12/2018 21:36
