In my pronounciation of 'proven'

Help settle a discussion between DH and I please!

I pronounce it as 'Pro-ven'
DH says its 'Proo-ven'

I am Scottish, he is South African, whether that makes a difference!

I'm Scottish and say pro-ven and me and English DH had an argument years ago about this! He says proo-ven. I had to give up my stance when he argued we say proo-f and not pro-f.

I feel I might reignite this argument this evening.

CollyWombles · 16/12/2018 22:10

I'm a bit of a prat and like to say things like 'it's been scientifically proven that orgasms unblock a blocked nose' (random example!) and other such useless information.

I say Pro-ven I'm from near Glasgow DH is from Aberdeen and he says proo-ven.

Molakai · 16/12/2018 22:10

taxiforMIL · 16/12/2018 22:11

Like the verdict “not proven”

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 16/12/2018 22:13

Proo- ven (London)

zukiecat · 16/12/2018 22:17

I'm in NE Scotland and I say Pro-ven

Nothisispatrick · 16/12/2018 22:18

I’ve never heard anyone say pro-ven. I’m finding it hard to even imagine.

Athena51 · 16/12/2018 22:24

Normally proo-ven but if I'm talking about the Scottish verdict of 'not proven' then I would say pro-ven.

Mum2OneTeen · 16/12/2018 22:28

Proo-ven here too (Australian)

Holowiwi · 16/12/2018 22:32

Proo-ven born in London raised in Essex

weebarra · 16/12/2018 22:32

Scottish. Pro-Ven

xJessica · 16/12/2018 22:34

I'm Scottish and say pro-ven

Dahlietta · 16/12/2018 22:40

I would say proo-ven unless I was saying 'not proven' as in the Scottish legal verdict, when I would say 'not pro-ven'!

RCohle · 16/12/2018 22:44

Scottish. Pro-ven.

FestiveNut · 16/12/2018 22:46

Proo-ven. Root word proo-ve. Unless you say pro-ve?

BreconBeBuggered · 16/12/2018 22:51

Pro-ven. But obviously, proo-ved. Scottish.

Proo - ven. I'm Scottish.

UnleashTheBulsara · 16/12/2018 23:15

Proo-ven. Also Scottish...

DriveShaft · 16/12/2018 23:31

Pro ven like the legal verdict in Scotland. I’m not Scottish but I’ve still always pronounced it that way. It sounds correct and it’s how DH (a lawyer) pronounces it too.

GruciusMalfoy · 16/12/2018 23:31

I'm Scottish. I'd say "Not pro-ven" if it was in the legal sense. But I think I'd otherwise say proo-ven, like in the bread example.

Maybe.

I'll not be able to say it without doubting myself now.

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 16/12/2018 23:34

pro/ ven ... scottish too

Fiveletters · 16/12/2018 23:35

I say proo-ven (north-west)

I don’t think I’ve ever heard pro-ven

angelikacpickles · 16/12/2018 23:41
