We live in a flat and we have a neighbor that has been going through a bit of a rough patch (death in the family and health issues). We’ve been supportive and helping them out with really simple things without expecting anything in return, because that’s what good neighbors do. We had made extra food and brought it over some nights when the wife was alone. I had driven her to the hospital when her father died because I didn’t want her driving hysterical. We had helped pick up things for the family funeral. Just really simple things.

I come home today to find a note taped to our door. It was a thank you note. Inside was the equivalent of £250!!!! I’m so touched and started crying. I know they don’t know our financial situation, but it will help greatly with Christmas. I knocked on the door and told her it was too much, but she said she wouldn’t hear of it.

That is lovely of your neighbour, but also lovely of you to help. You say they are simple things, but to that lady you have made a real difference.

Do you know herbfavourite, chocolates, fliers or tipple? Maybe get her a small gift. How lovely 😊

Elphie54 · 15/12/2018 00:42

She was already on our gift list, but definitely going to add to it. Perhaps a nice bottle of wine and some chocolates.

jessstan2 · 15/12/2018 01:24

That is so lovely. It shows how much she appreciates you, you're a great neighbour.

Defenbaker · 15/12/2018 01:31

Ah, that's lovely. You sound like you were there for your neighbour just when she needed it, and now she is returning the favour, in a different way.
It's possible she received some inheritance from her father, and now has enough money for her needs, with some to spare, so decided to gift some to you. I was in a similar position a while back, and treated a friend who had been good to me over the years, knowing that the money would make a real difference to her. Her reaction was priceless and made me feel the money was well spent, it felt so good to spread a little happiness after going through a dark time. Happy Christmas to you and your neighbour.

AviatorShades · 15/12/2018 01:33

Oh! how lovelySmile and yes, it shows just how much she's appreciated all your acts of kindness. Smile

CaroloftheBalls · 15/12/2018 01:40
Hmm
Defenbaker · 15/12/2018 01:57

Just to clarify, I'm not meaning to brag about helping my friend out, I just wanted to give the other perspective. Receiving inheritance can be a bitter sweet thing, so using some to help a friend was something that helped me, as well as her. If the situation was reversed she'd do the same for me.

This is what money is for. How lovely!

Pachyderm1 · 15/12/2018 07:17

So nice!

You’ve behaved really dencently and done more than others would have, with no expectation of anything in return - it will mean a lot to your neighbour and they probably feel glad to have the opportunity to thank you in this way.

ciderhouserules · 15/12/2018 07:23

Wow that is a lot of money! Are you sure she can afford it?

I don't think I would have accepted such a lot - maybe £50, if anything.

RyderWhiteSwan · 15/12/2018 07:38

If she couldn't afford it - she wouldn't have given it. You've both lightened the load for each other Smile

buttybuttychristmastree · 15/12/2018 07:43

Well I think you deserve it! If that were my parents and their neighbour helped I would be so grateful, people alive in their own bubbles too often. Well done for being a lovely human. They clearly appreciate it. You need the money, but make sure you treat yourself x

SilverLining10 · 15/12/2018 08:49

Such a lovely gesture. I'm sure she wouldn't have given that amount if she couldnt afford it. You both sound like good neighbors to each other
