We live in a flat and we have a neighbor that has been going through a bit of a rough patch (death in the family and health issues). We’ve been supportive and helping them out with really simple things without expecting anything in return, because that’s what good neighbors do. We had made extra food and brought it over some nights when the wife was alone. I had driven her to the hospital when her father died because I didn’t want her driving hysterical. We had helped pick up things for the family funeral. Just really simple things.

I come home today to find a note taped to our door. It was a thank you note. Inside was the equivalent of £250!!!! I’m so touched and started crying. I know they don’t know our financial situation, but it will help greatly with Christmas. I knocked on the door and told her it was too much, but she said she wouldn’t hear of it.

That's lovely of them to thank you in that way. In all honesty the help you gave them was priceless, having someone there for you for the little things, through a difficult time, can mean the world.

7yo7yo · 15/12/2018 09:49

That’s so lovely! Actually made me well
Up.
Merry Christmas 🎄

Fluffythrow · 15/12/2018 10:48

I'd give it back. It's far too much to accept from a neighbour..

continuallychargingmyphone · 15/12/2018 11:37

I can’t believe they left so much taped to the door Shock

Fluffythrow · 15/12/2018 11:43

A delivery driver could have nicked it.

CandyCreeper · 15/12/2018 11:44

i wouldnt have accepted it personally

continuallychargingmyphone · 15/12/2018 11:44
Xmas Grin

Now, now ...

CoughLaughFart · 15/12/2018 11:47

A delivery driver could have nicked it.

But they didn’t.

THE END

WorraLiberty · 15/12/2018 11:51

Aww that really is a lovely thing to do Thanks

Perhaps the OP has a dog and that's why she taped it to the door?

MrsKCastle · 15/12/2018 11:54

That's lovely. If they couldn't afford it, they wouldn't have given so much. All the posters saying the OP shouldn't have accepted it - she did tell the neighbour that it was too much, but the neighbour insisted. If she had continued to refuse to accept it, she would have offended them. In the neighbour's situation, it would make me happy to be able to help OP out. The unselfish thing is to accept gifts that are freely given.

Millipedewithherfeetup · 15/12/2018 11:55

Good things do happen to good people Xmas Smile

itscalledwineflu · 15/12/2018 12:00

Love this , you are obviously a lovely person enjoy your Christmas Xmas Smile

winsinbin · 15/12/2018 12:10

A delivery driver didn’t nick it. It wasn’t eaten by a three toed sloth and a freak wind didn’t blow it into a tree. It was obviously meant to be that the OP should receive it and enjoy it.

CaptainCabinets · 15/12/2018 12:10

@CandyCreeper

Rubbish

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 15/12/2018 12:11

Fluffytheevil1 · 15/12/2018 12:14

That’s lovely. Xmas Smile

Serialweightwatcher · 15/12/2018 12:20

That was lovely of them, but you have obviously helped them so much through this difficult time ... wish we all had neighbours like you Flowers

SilkenTofu · 15/12/2018 12:20

There are people in the world who see peoples pain on a level others don't. They pause a moment then decide to do what is within their means to help them out, even if they don't know them and with no expectation of anything in return. If you know someone like this, you are very lucky. They are rare.

OP, I'm glad your kindness has been rewarded. We need more people like you in the world.

Elphie54 · 15/12/2018 12:50

We tape notes to neighbors doors all the time in the building, it’s a fairly safe building. None of us were home so I guess that’s why she taped it, you would never know there was money in it just from looking at it.

For those saying not to accept it, I did tell her I couldn’t accept it when I knocked on her door. Both her and her husband refused to take it back.

Extend an invite for a meal over Christmas, because time with others, friendship is priceless, that could be a nice way to say thanks?

“A delivery driver didn’t nick it. It wasn’t eaten by a three toed sloth and a freak wind didn’t blow it into a tree. It was obviously meant to be that the OP should receive it and enjoy it.”

Oh dear!!! We have a three toed sloth infestation again? They promised they wouldn’t return!! Lol.

Sorry that sentence made me laugh harder than it should have.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 15/12/2018 12:55

Aw that’s lovely. Don’t even think about not accepting it, that would be so hurtful and embarrassing for them. I expect it’s given them an enormous amount of pleasure to give it to you.

WhatwouldCJdo · 15/12/2018 12:57

When life is shitty and someone steps up helping out with the smaller stuff and is reliable, - it is priceless. I know this from experience and believe me a thank you and any gift seems inadequate.

I think it's lovely and wow. I think they will see the money being put to great use. It's a big amount but they'll have probably of thought that out. Enjoy it.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 15/12/2018 13:18

Awww that's really lovely. Given me all the feels.
Good neighbours are beyond price; my little road has a really lovely community of people looking out for each other. Our elderly neighbour has just broken her hip, so the road is taking it in turns to visit her in hospital as her relationships with her family are tricky and they are far away.
Enjoy the money, OP- your neighbour wouldn't have given what she couldn't afford. I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas.
