Rummaging around my handbag I just found a christian dior eyeshadow trio i bought in 2004. Am i the only one who can't bear to throw out old (expensive) makeup?
Amd more importantly can i still wear it?

If it smells ok I’d say it’s fine.

I’ve got well old make up 😂

BarbedBloom · 12/12/2018 11:04

Powdery stuff I keep, but anything liquid like mascara I only keep for a few months

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 11:07

@BarbedBloom a few months?!?!?! I think that nust be a typo and you mean years.

Letsmoveondude · 12/12/2018 11:08

Hah, yes. I’ve a few bits knocking about the house like bronzers, and highlighters that I can’t bare the idea of chucking. CD stuff too.

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 11:08

@glueandstick last year i lost a lipliner from the 90s. I was quite upset.

Some of mine is ancient and my eyes haven't fallen out yet.

silkpyjamasallday · 12/12/2018 11:10

I've got a Dior eyeshadow palette that was my DMs in the 80s. Neither of us really wear makeup so it will probably get passed down to dd Grin

Letsmoveondude · 12/12/2018 11:15

What is it with everyone and old Dior make up, seems a running theme!

paap1975 · 12/12/2018 11:17

Almost all of my makeup is several years old. It's never done me any hard. It's just another marketing ploy if you ask me.

cloudtree · 12/12/2018 11:19

I have a rimmel heather shimmer lipstick in my make up box. I must have bought it circa 30 years ago...

NC4Now · 12/12/2018 11:19

My wedding makeup (Chanel) has outlasted the marriage.

MrsMartinRohde · 12/12/2018 11:20

I've got a Laura Mercier lipstick that's been with me since 2000. Nothing wrong with it, it's in my make-up bag and I use it, not often, granted.

Foundation and mascara are the only things I throw out for being old.

DayManChampionOfTheSun · 12/12/2018 11:22

I have some which I found in a box at my mums that I bought when I was 13 sooo about 15 years ago, still worked fine hahaha!

Grapetree · 12/12/2018 11:23

I have old Dior and Elizabeth Arden makeup - I don’t use it but couldn’t throw it away as their old packaging was soo pretty lol

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 11:23

@Letsmoveondude the packaging was always beautiful.

I have an essence eye shadow palette since around 2005 it’s still my nicest eyeshadow and I still use it

penisbeakerfan1 · 12/12/2018 11:30

Handbags need to be cleaned, just as clothes do - if not more. They pick up all sorts of germs and bacteria as they spend so much time on the floor and brushing up against god knows what. If you're finding things that old in your bag then you clearly need to clean your handbag out more so that you don't keep spreading disgusting germs to your poor family.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 12/12/2018 11:42

I have ancient makeup too. I only chuck it when it runs out or (mascara only) dries up. My current foundation is a year old - I wear it almost every day but a bottle lasts a long time because I don't cake it on. I am currently wearing Bobbi Brown sparkly shimmer brick powder that I bought when DD was a baby, and she's 6 now. I have eyeshadow from university (so circa 2002).

Villanellesproudmum · 12/12/2018 11:42

Some old make up can be worth money !

JoyofSticks · 12/12/2018 11:45

We were fine using old make-up until the manufacturers and retailers starting telling us to buy more instead of using all our old stuff up. Why don't they make the sizes smaller if their bacterial claims are true? I'll tell'ya why...it's just a way of making more money and nothing to do with germs.

Lynne45 · 12/12/2018 11:46

Mine never lasts more than a year! I don’t think I’d keep it longer anyway, I have really sensitive skin and wouldn’t want to irritate it.

RyderWhiteSwan · 12/12/2018 11:47

@penisbeakerfan1 I have always had large shoulder/hand bags, full of junk. Cleaned out occasionally. My DC are in their 30s and 40s and have somehow survived my handbag bacteria Grin

Chewbecca · 12/12/2018 11:48

Oooh, I just bought a Dior eyeshadow thingy. Do we think it'll 'see me out'? (I am 46).

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 11:50

@penisbeakerfan1 please don't worry my handbags are too expensive to put on floor or random surfaces. I have a bag for my handbags and a cotton bag to protect the fabric inside!
