Rummaging around my handbag I just found a christian dior eyeshadow trio i bought in 2004. Am i the only one who can't bear to throw out old (expensive) makeup?
Amd more importantly can i still wear it?

Liquid stuff seems to go skanky quicker. Powder stuff last ages if not used.

BagofTeeth · 12/12/2018 11:52

I have old Dior make up too. The only thing I regularly replace is mascara but I've found they don't last like they used to anyway, they seem to clump a lot sooner nowadays. They used to last forever for me.

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 11:53

@JoyofSticks absolutely agree. I don't use my makeup quickly enough to replace constantly.

I buy expensive make up as it's guaranteed to make me look like Jennifer Lawrence.

I could build a house with the number of discarded disappointments Grin

I am guilty of old make up hoarding, and how I wish I had hoarded my original Biba airforce blue eyeliner all those years ago, sadly it got left on the sink in a club toilet.

On a related note it might be just me but I always cringe when I see makeup artists using the same brushes on all their clients. Who knows what revolting germs are being passed on. My own ancient and historic germs , microbes , skin particles and bacteria are fine, but yours? no thanks.

ScarlettSahara · 12/12/2018 11:54

I do have old stuff but after a uni lecture which mentioned bacterial growth in creams I do chuck more out (mainly creams or liquids that go near the eye). Still tend to keep for 2 years though cos I tend to forget when I opened them.
I really wish all moisturisers came in tubes & pumps rather than having to stick fingers in a pot.

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 11:59

@viques i thought they clean them! Or have several sets.

OP posts:
ambereeree · 12/12/2018 12:00

What if you kept creams in the fridge? Would that stop bacteria growing?

The idea that you should throw it out after a certain amount of time strikes me as marketing bollocks.

I work in marketing. A marketeers job is to get you to buy more stuff. Don't make it easy for them. Grin

strawberrisc · 12/12/2018 12:01

I'm not going to admit to how old some of mine is...

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 12/12/2018 12:02

Years? Yes! Decades.....errr nope.

NameChanger22 · 12/12/2018 12:02

I have a big drawer full of old make up I'll probably never wear but can't throw away, some of it is 30 years old. I keep it for memory reasons. I throw away used mascaras but nothing else.

viques · 12/12/2018 12:15

I'm sure they have several sets, and wash them, but I doubt they use a new clean set for every client. They certainly won't use new mascara for everyone! Think how many clients the make up girls on store counters get through, or the make up people on tv programmes, or films.

If I ever get famous and have to be made up before I read the news/accept my Oscar/make my Nobel prize speech I am going to make sure I take my own brushes, lip stick, mascara and eyeliner. I'll take my chances on stuff on my skin!

SylviaAndSydney · 12/12/2018 12:18

I’d only bin mascara or liquid eyeliners after a few months.

@viques they should be using disposable wands. Liners can be sharpened, lipsticks applied with a brush

ambereeree · 12/12/2018 12:42

@viques i love that you have thought so far ahead!

OP posts:
BarbedBloom · 12/12/2018 14:59

@amberreeree In my case it is only around 6 months for mascara. I got a hideous eye infection once and read online that mascara can harbour bacteria from the wand going in and out and was too scared to end up with another one Grin I do have old eyeshadow/blusher etc though. Am happy to be corrected if I am wrong about mascara as it would save me buying more! Although I do tend to use up most of a tube in that time anyway from using it daily

wednesday32 · 12/12/2018 15:06

eyeshadow should be fine I would use some tissue to rub off the top layer to expose fresher product underneath. Any applicators/brushes in the set should be cleaned. Mascara should be thrown after 3 months though x

LaurieFairyCake · 12/12/2018 15:09

I still use a pink pout lip pencil from 1996

ChocolateTearDrops · 12/12/2018 15:09

Dior or Chanel make up? I think I've gone to town if I'm wearing my rimmel or boots 17 eyeliner! Grin

MassDebate · 12/12/2018 15:14

I still have and use some of my wedding day makeup. I’ve been married 12 years Blush

CarefullyDrawnMap · 12/12/2018 15:17

I have a Ruby & Millie eyeliner from, not sure, early 2003? and it is fantastic, still. It's the best eyeliner I ever had and I use it, still. No infections. I read an article where either Ruby or Millie said they really cared about the make up they were making but when Boots bought them out it all went to shit and they were full of regrets.
