To think the council should fix this?

beetty · 11/12/2018 16:10

My front door and the frame don't join together properly so it's absolutely freezing in my house.
The drafts are so bad.
They have been out today and say nothing they can do.
Can I have your opinion?
Or advice what I can do please?
It's so cold

I'm not saying there should be no gaps
I'm saying my door doesn't shut properly and the gaps get wider along the top and side

Lets see the widest part of the gap?

beetty · 11/12/2018 16:57

There's no doors upstairs it's all open plan bar doors on bedroom /bathroom

Looks normal to me

italiancortado · 11/12/2018 16:59

My kitchen hasn't been replaced is 1986 so I doubt that will change anytime soon.
Don't have double glazed windows either.
The whole place is freezing
Old boiler in the airing cupboard..

I refer you back to my previous suggestion of renting privately or buying.

Seriously.

Ellisandra · 11/12/2018 16:59

I think you’ll find it’s your upstairs single glazed windows that are keeping the house cold, not a downstairs door that looks like a perfectly normal wooden door fit.

Draft excluder strip on the door is cheap. A chunky drafter excluder will be pretty cheap (temporary and free is clothes stuffed in a pair of thick tights). More expensive but worth it - a door curtain. More expensive but worth looking into - secondary double glazing that you fix on yourself, inside.

Nicknacky · 11/12/2018 16:59

I think this is one of the weirdest threads I have read in a while.

Dermymc · 11/12/2018 16:59

Put some more clothes on OP. Light a couple of candles. Make one warm room.

Sadly council housing can be pants. You need to do what you can within your budget to try and keep the place warmer. Draught excluder tape round the door, get the heating system checked if you can afford it as it might need radiators bleeding etc, hang heavy curtains, have blankets on sofas for evening.

Yeah because being told I should buy a house instead of living in a council house ain't rude is it !

It's not rude. I suggested that of the council are so bad you should look to an alternative.

Now you have posted about an old boiler, single glazing and 1980's kitchen, that just confirms you should be looking for an alternative.

Nothing rude about theT

Ellisandra · 11/12/2018 17:01

Fix up a heavy curtain on a pole over your bedroom, and if the layout allows it, at the top of your stairs, too.

beetty · 11/12/2018 17:01

Today I had a workman in who stated how freezing it was actually ..

Ellisandra · 11/12/2018 17:03

We’re not doubting that it’s freezing. But that door gap is normal for a wooden door, so the council ANBU.
You’ve been given several good options that will help.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/12/2018 17:03

The door and doorframe will have been sold as a complete unit. It may have dropped slightly on its hinges if the gap is bigger at the top than the sides. Draft excluders will help as has been mentioned several times.

As for the area being cold. This is an area at the bottom of your stairs. It’s normal that it is cold. It’s almost like an outside porch. I assume you don’t heat the area, why would you? Hot air rises. Cold air falls.

Extrastout · 11/12/2018 17:03

I see nothing wrong with it. The lack of double glazing might be what's making the flat cold. Does the door open to the outside? My front door opens onto a stairwell, so it's not exactly facing the elements. I'll post a picture of mine in a minute.

Perfectly1mperfect · 11/12/2018 17:03

Have a look at some of the draught excluder products like the tape that a PP suggested. They can make a real difference and aren't too expensive from somewhere like B & Q.

RoboticMary · 11/12/2018 17:04

That looks perfectly normal to me OP. Not sure why you want the council to do something when you could do it yourself so cheaply - loads of good suggestions upthread. We’re private renters with a seriously badly fitting door - there’s a .5 inch gap at the bottom and the wind actually whistles through it. But we have a draught excluder and curtains. Don’t expect the landlord to fix what we can ourselves.

myrtleWilson · 11/12/2018 17:05

Am surprised a kitchen that old wasn't replaced to meet the decent homes standard (unless it has been exceptionally well maintained) What is your SAP rating OP (or ask your HO) as new targets are coming in for SAPs and that may be a better way to engage with your landlord

beetty · 11/12/2018 17:05

Yeah the door opens to the outside

'Today I had a workman in who stated how freezing it was actually'

Unless your flat is in the arctic circle it hasn't been that cold today. Maybe you need to wear more layers and move around a bit more?

italiancortado · 11/12/2018 17:05

Was 1986 the last time any upgrade was done on the property?

Purpleartichoke · 11/12/2018 17:05

We own our house and our door gap is similar. The best solution is a storm door, but we haven’t got around to getting one yet.

beetty · 11/12/2018 17:05

The previous tenant refused them in to put in new boiler /kitchen so now I've been told they only do replacements in batches

italiancortado · 11/12/2018 17:06

Presumably he was beside the door rather than on your bedroom. It's cold beside doors.

gamerchick · 11/12/2018 17:06

You need to manage with what you've got OP. I have a long thick curtain at the front door hung with curtain wire and a couple of screws in the wall. Before I got new windows I used to buy rolls of bubble wrap, the type with the big bubbles, cut to size, spray window with water and attach bubble side down and clag at the edges. Tuck curtains behind radiators and put foil down the back.

The council won't do anything as it's not on poor condition.

Extrastout · 11/12/2018 17:07

Here is my door and draught excluder surround
