To think the council should fix this?

My front door and the frame don't join together properly so it's absolutely freezing in my house.
The drafts are so bad.
They have been out today and say nothing they can do.
Can I have your opinion?
Or advice what I can do please?
It's so cold

Just to add to the above, I don't mean the foamy stuff on a roll, these are actual strips of flat plastic which screw on but could probably be glued.

Extrastout · 11/12/2018 17:47

There is no such thing as negotiation with a council. It's take it or don't take it and we'll take you off the housing list. You have two options. Take it, or end up homeless. You'd want to have seen the state of my gaff when I moved in!

Allthewaves · 11/12/2018 17:52

Mum and dad's wooden front door is like that. They reckon that's why Victorian house they are in has a second internal door. Honestly a very heavy curtain will make loads of difference

limitedperiodonly · 11/12/2018 17:55

Please show me your wooden doors!

I think we might have discovered a niche to the poo troll genre. I don't understand it but these people lure innocent and helpful people into revealing details of their private lives in order to get their twisted kicks wherever they can.

Stop posting pictures of your doors, people Shock.

MNHQ: if you want to delete me I will accept my punishment Halo Wink.

My own front door farts long and loud whenever it's stormy round about this time of year. We're used to it but it freaks the cat out and he runs around in terror and it's unwise to try to comfort him unless you want to be savaged.

I'm not saying that because I am a sick fart troll hoping for stories for the wank bank. It really does happen. Honest.

gamerchick · 11/12/2018 17:57

OP are you even reading the posts? The doors supposed to be like that. If it's cold then do what you can to sort it, including layering up.

limitedperiodonly · 11/12/2018 17:58

And stop talking about 'foamy stuff on a roll'. I know you're trying to be helpful but it just encourages them. Wink

RCohle · 11/12/2018 18:04

I live in a Victorian house, there are massive gaps around the front and back door. Wood contracts in the cold, if your door fitted flush in December you won't be able to open it in August.

You seem completely unwilling to accept any of the advice you've been given about DIY fixes OP.

Unfortunately if you want to be very fussy about things like double glazing, boilers and precisely how you like doors to fit then you need to buy your own property.

MsJaneAusten · 11/12/2018 18:05

I’m not sure why you’re focusing on the ONE POST about moving into private accommodation rather than the SIX PAGES suggesting insulating tape / draft excluders / a curtain. There are solutions out there that are much, much cheaper (& probably more effective) than replacing your door.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 11/12/2018 18:07

I have wooden doors that are exactly like that, you just have to put up heavy curtains and use draught excluders. My floorboards also let in draughts, I have no double glazing and leaky old window frames and I have damp patches on some walls but I love this old house and it's draughty old quirks because it is home.

CottonSock · 11/12/2018 18:16

My house is way worse, as floors are not straight. You need a curtain basically as every other poster has told you.

HappyStripper · 11/12/2018 18:18

Everyone has given you suggestions. A little gap is in no way enough of a reason to change an entire door! As you said, beggars can’t be choosers. Just get some of the tape and you’ll be good!

dippledorus · 11/12/2018 18:19

My wooden front door is worse than that, and it opens to my front hall. Get a curtain.

PlatypusPie · 11/12/2018 18:20

Is it in an older house, OP ? We have a gap like that ( narrower at the top than the bottom) on our front door - there isn’t a straight wall or line in the whole house. We had worse on our back door and had a new frame put in when we had a new kitchen - not a minor building job at all, involving weight bearing lintels etc. We have a combination of draught excluders and a heavy curtain in the winter on the front door that cut down the draughts. I was looking for a particular piece of fabric recently and, failing to find new, I noticed that charity shops are a great source of all kinds of curtains. You might find one that could e a temporary fix.

I had a flat once that had a similar door onto straight up the stairs lay out - was chilly at the base of the stairs but cold draughts dont really rise and it wasn’t that that made it cold, even with the radiators roaring badly, it was elderly, badly fitting sash windows ( for which window film was a brilliant, cheap seasonal answer).

Our house now has only single glazed wooden sashes, but renovated, and slowly replaced over the years so are draught free.

seven201 · 11/12/2018 18:23

Door gap pics as requested. Wooden doors need gaps as they contract depending on the temp/weather. Buy some draft excluder!

You shouldn't have called the council in for this! My husband works for a council doing similar jobs.

It's cold if I stand by my front door too. Wooden ones are a bit drafty, but you can make it less so with cheap draft excluding tape.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/12/2018 18:25

I cant see any fault with the door, its looks like a wooden door and appears to be in normal measurements.

I'd go with the heavy door curtain.

YouCanCallMeJodieWho · 11/12/2018 18:34

Nothing wrong with the door. It's perfectly normal. Put up a curtain like any normal person.

If your flat is upstairs from the door and cold don't you think there are other reasons? Like needing double glazing, better curtains, bleeding radiators etc?

Have you recorded what the temperature upstairs is? Have you noticed which way the wind is blowing on the days it is colder?

beetty · 11/12/2018 18:43

Like I said previously it's the fact the door doesn't even seem to shut properly at the top as well.
I honestly don't believe that door should be like that.
My neighbours isnt.
He has a totally different door.
It is annoying because it does make my flat absolutely freezing.

My old council house doors was like this I put a heavy curtain up and some draft excluders.it was straight into my living room. They rolled out new door in all the properties after a few years. I looked in to buying a pvc door myself and was shocked with the cost.

Nicknacky · 11/12/2018 18:44

Have you actually read the thread? It won’t be that tiny gap that is causing it to be cold.

And yes, doors are like that. People have posted photos of their doors!

dippledorus · 11/12/2018 18:46

My door does that. Bends out at the bottom in my case. There’s screw holes where there used to be a bolt as well. I can’t afford to replace it so I’m stuck with it. Get a curtain. No big deal.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 11/12/2018 18:47

Buy. A. Curtain.

Honestly OP, it is not that bad. I opened my front door yesterday, it took me half an hour to close it again because the door has swollen and no longer fits the frame, I won't be able to use the front door again until the summer months when the door dries out a bit and fits in the frame.

beetty · 11/12/2018 18:47

If you put your hand to the door you feel how cold it is ..the Hall is icy so it is the door.

OP posts:
Nicknacky · 11/12/2018 18:54

Mines the same! Why are you not getting that yes, there will be a draught as it is impossible for the wood to be sealed completely?

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 11/12/2018 18:55

oh I work in social housing and I hate it when customers say but my neighbour has X,Y,Z, you have no idea why the neighbour has X door, they may have paid for it themselves, they may have needed a new door fitted due to DV, or simply because the door was not fit for purpose,

Yours is fit for purpose, it does what its supposed to do, if you want a new door, then pay for it, but dont forget to ask for permission first. You took the property as seen!
