Mrs May. Who's going to replace her as PM?

longwayoff · 11/12/2018 08:51

After her performance yesterday it's simply a matter of time? Or is it? Who is fit to replace her? I can't think of a time when there was nobody I'd entrust the country to by voting for them but now here we are. What on earth is going to happen?

No but his background has been exploited by the party when it suits them.

longwayoff · 11/12/2018 12:06

Come back Ken Clarke. Never did I think it possible I could wish that.

Presumably this is how Trump materialised, as a saviour from a pool of mediocrity, he who shouts loudest etc.

Same with Hitler who also gained power because there were no viable alternatives.

Not that that makes any difference to how he'd fare in the job, but I don't think he should be seen as representing that particular demographic

He probably won't put himself forward anyway. Who would?

Does anyone know if anyone has said they'd be prepared to give it a go - (and commit political suicide?)

Childrenofthesun · 11/12/2018 12:17

I agree, but in reality it will probably affect some people's perception, even if they don't voice it, especially as ignorant people like me make false assumptions about his religion.

Mummyoflittledragon · 11/12/2018 12:26

I think we should make David Cameron on pain of death come back and sort this shit out. I can’t think of anyone availble to truly fit the bill. Ken Clarke, Keir Stammer and David Milliband would get my vote. Can’t think of a strong enough female politician I’d like unfortunately. But all of these choices are as likely as Dr Who, who could be good for changing the result. Alternatively Dr No with obligatory pirhana tank.

longwayoff · 11/12/2018 12:34

Never underestimate the amount of unexpressed racism in this country. A consituency in the South, Tory forever with massive unmoveable majority, many years ago now, put up a black candidate. Goodbye Tories, hello LibDems. Took years for them to recover it. I don't think they could chance Sajid without an overall loss in votes.

Mummy I only voted Leave to get rid of DC and GO Xmas Shock

I'm still considering it a win.

brizzledrizzle · 11/12/2018 12:39

Please stop calling her Mrs May.

We call her Mrs May occasionally as a bit of a joke because of the 'Mrs May' character in the Biff, Chip and Kipper books that the DCs read in infant school Grin

But yes, don't call her Mrs May otherwise.

yolofish · 11/12/2018 12:41

couldnt we have a special coalition, like I think was done in wartime? made up of those with the best interests of the country at heart, not those playing politics with peoples' lives while making a buck or a thousand along the way? no, silly me, that's just a pipedream...

NotAColdWomanHenry · 11/12/2018 12:54

Can someone explain why it's bad to call her Mrs May? It's what the news calls her and what she calls herself?

AdamNichol · 11/12/2018 12:55

Given a free choice (from the world of politics) I'd go for Chuka Unuma. But he's not a leader of any party.

Every politician wants to grab that trophy. But most of them could see that what call-me-dave left wasn't the trophy but a poisoned chalice.

Negotiating a future relationship with the EU that suits Britain when there is minimal gain for EU was always going to be hard, selling said deal to a deeply divided country was always going to make it a near impossibility. But it's not fully impossible, it just needs the correct person - and that person wasn't TM. Nor is it BJ, JJ, JRM, or Hunt.
As an ex-teacher, it pains me to say it, but Gove is probably the person best equipped (and practiced) at moulding an outcome to his vision...of course, whether that's the right vision.........

AdamNichol · 11/12/2018 12:57

Calls herself? Didn't know that.
I think the objection is that it's Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, David Cameron, Mrs May. Inconsistent, and also there's the affiliation to the ongoing debate about female salutations being derived from marital status

howabout · 11/12/2018 13:02

Maybot works much better from all pov - even suitably gender ambiguous.

NotAColdWomanHenry · 11/12/2018 13:05

But that's just not true. On the BBC website for example, they refer to the politician by full name first, then use Mr, Ms etc. - for all politicians. Most press and news do this.

"But environment secretary Mr Gove, who campaigned for Brexit alongside Mr Johnson in the 2016 referendum, told the BBC's Andrew Marr show..."

The were always calling Cameron "Mr Cameron." They use the title the person styles themselves as - here you can see that for May it's "Mrs May": uk parliament website

Now I totally agree that Mrs is a dodgy patriarchal title and it's not one I'd ever use, but it is her choice and using the title someone prefers is basic respect.

Total red herring to get in a flap about!

longwayoff · 11/12/2018 13:05

Hmm. My grandmother was named Fanny. She much preferred to be addressed as Mrs Wayoff.

TM has been handed a poisoned chalice, and no doubt really is feeling that at this precise moment. Whatever she does, approximately 50% of the voting public will be unhappy.

Having seen BJ and MG look like naughty school boys when the original vote came back, I think they should be told to sort it out and see how easy it is, and we’ll have that 350m we were promised too thanks.

Whether you agree with her politics or not, she does seem a genuine person doing her best in very trying circumstances. Yes, she may not be Maggie( love or loathe her) but given the antics that the rest of them are upto, she’s as good as it gets. Never have I been more embarrassed to be British. Not only do we want to leave Europe, but sort of don’t all agree with that, we very publicly can’t agree terms to leave..... with 3 months to go..... what a win for the ‘United Kingdom’. It doesn’t feel terribly united right now.....

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 11/12/2018 13:10

I'm no fan of her politics, but I admire her greatly. I often wake up and feel a bit reluctant to go into work, and I work in a civil service department where Brexit and it's implications are not as prominent ad others (although there are still some complications). I can't imagine how it must feel for her to wake up and think about her day ahead, and the sense of dread that must come over her. Whatever she does, she knows she will be criticised by one half of the country, and her colleagues are jostling to discredit her further.

As a fellow human, I feel for her, and she has enormous balls to just get on with it day by day.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 11/12/2018 13:17

Sadly, as you said, it's a pipe dream

A sensible one, but a pipe dream all the same - as mentioned, we currently have far too many talentless, crawling deadbeats for it to happen

Deadbudgie · 11/12/2018 13:22

Well according to William hill the most likely pm is Corbyn followed by Johnson, the neck and neck Jarvid and raab! Usually the Betting public is a fairly good predictor

So they are expecting an election then. Hmm, could be interesting.

longwayoff · 11/12/2018 13:40

I'm surprised but agree, follow the bookies. Presumably, as this brexit rubbish has been handled solely by the Tories and there have been no formal agreements, then everything would be up for negotiation still? Although Article 50 would still apply? Thank heavens am not involved in politics and only get to carp from the sidelines.

But maybe we should have a new tv, a cross between I’m a celebrity and bear grumps the island. Stick the top running politicians on an island with little natural resources on there for the next two weeks. The public get to vote them off in the run up to Christmas, the winner is announced Christmas Day just before queenie and has 3 months to sort it out. All monies raised go to charity, obvious hosted by ant (making a comeback) and dec! Bear could give survival tips. I’d pay to see jezza stalking a cayman.

NotAColdWomanHenry · 11/12/2018 13:42

Raab!? Bloody hell. My cat could be a better Tory leader than him.

NotAColdWomanHenry · 11/12/2018 13:44

I prefer the idea of a Keir Starmer Magical Christmas. It will snow, there will be tinkly music and Starmer will appear on our screens in full Santa outfit, before announcing he is taking over as everyone else has been too naughty /crap
