Not picking people up for xmas?

StephenQueenBooks · 10/12/2018 07:35

I have been asked to pick up my brother, sil and their two kids (3 and 2) on Xmas day as they can't drive/get public transport. I don't drink so fine with this as my mum wants a tipple (I live with her just out of uni).

When I spoke to my brother about it last night I said we should all fit in even with the carseats and he said he didn't have any.

I told him I'm not having two toddlers in my car not in carseats because it's not safe and I don't want the fine. I said you either get car seats or you'll have to come a different day when you can get the bus. My mum is backing me up however him and my sil are annoyed saying it's their children and they don't mind them sitting on their knees.

Aibu to say no carseats, no lift? I've only just started driving last month and lifts are the bane of my life!

Have they got friends they could lend 2 car seats from? Or look on free cycle - lots of people give them away to get rid of them ( of course checking they ve not been in an accident. )

It’s veey selfish of them to put you into this position. And can’t they afford a simple roast dinner - that’s the same as a Christmas dinner?

I hope you find a way of getting the kids to grandmas Christmas Day.

BumbleBeee69 · 11/12/2018 18:29

Your brother and his Wife are DICKS. I wouldn't even respond to a 'woe is me' text like that, he needs to grow the hell up, and provide safe passage for his own Children FFS. Hmm

OP you sounds really lovely, ignore the posts insinuating you should resolve this situation, for them, AGAIN. Flowers

MinecraftHolmes · 11/12/2018 18:29

self-righteous

Oh tell me about it. Those self-righteous pricks who obey the law Hmm

She's not refusing to give them a lift, she's refusing to break the law by taking their children as passengers without the appropriate restraints.

corinne97 · 11/12/2018 18:35

There will be more police on the roads on christmas day so more likely to get a fine. Plus there will be more drink drivers on the road so more likely to get into an accident. Not worth the risk.

Bozlem80 · 11/12/2018 18:37

Tell them to look on selling pages or free pages on Facebook, gumtree etc... in their local area, you are breaking the law if have kids in the car with no car seats!

StephenQueenBooks · 11/12/2018 18:37

I am the youngest and I'm also the only girl so I feel I'm expected to do more than them. I'm also the only one without kids so his attitude of not knowing because I don't have kids isn't that surprising.

I've finished uni and trying to get into a career with the police which he knows! So why would I do anything even remotely against the law, never mind this.

Bit childish but I just replied "have fun at 's mum then, hope you all get there in one pieces and without fines"

Radio silence still but nice FB post from SIL about excited to be with family at Xmas. Feel like commenting you've got the time to post here but not post asking for a car seat but I'm not engaging with her, it's my brother's issue.

(Again sorry about the paras)

I will just point out there isn’t more police on the road on Christmas Day. If any forces are like mine there is far less on duty as they pay double time on Christmas Day so it is down to minimum manning levels.

Not that I’m suggest any one drives illegally as that’s not the case!

Ivydalegirl · 11/12/2018 18:39

I feel so sorry for those poor little children. Their lives sound miserable.
'They are a very, very low income family ' you say, but they find money for cigarettes and drugs!

Hellsbells35 · 11/12/2018 18:39

How old are the kids? And how far? I think you can transport legally at 3 short distances?

AlexaAmbidextra · 11/12/2018 18:39

shepherdspieisminging
Why can't your mum watch yours whilst you get them? Don't see the problem tbh.
Are you the poster who was dreading them all coming for Christmas, and people told you to suck it up because it's her house and you can't dictate what to do?
There's either a back story here or you're being deliberately difficult. It's Christmas.

What on earth are you talking about? Try reading the thread before having a go at the OP.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/12/2018 18:41

You are being a responsible adult. They are not. You are not prepared to risk killing or seriously injuring their children. They are. Well no way they're doing it in your car. You'd be the one in legal shit.

GunpowderGelatine · 11/12/2018 18:42

I don't know how much weed goes for these days but tell them to stay off it for a few days and use what they save for a taxi.

God OP I thought my family were awful

StephenQueenBooks · 11/12/2018 18:42

GunpowderGelatine · 11/12/2018 18:43

Interestingly I find it so odd that people suggest the OP should buy car seats or pay for a taxi? This always happens on these threads! Why the hell should she? She's just out of Uni FFS!

MerdedeBrexit · 11/12/2018 18:44

Hellsbells, I think someone said earlier on this thread that you can transport children without car seats in an emergency, but not for planned journeys like this.

Hellsbells35 · 11/12/2018 18:44

They will be wearing seatbelts!

LoniceraJaponica · 11/12/2018 18:44

That is the best answer OhLook.
Short and to the point.

Hellsbells35 · 11/12/2018 18:45

Unexpected, necessary or over short distance

GodrestyemerrySchadenfreud · 11/12/2018 18:49

his attitude of not knowing because I don't have kids isn't that surprising.

But one day he will want you to take care of them for some reason, and not having your own kids won't matter - your OVARIES will guide you.

Bunnybaubles · 11/12/2018 18:49

Halfords are selling (very basic) car seats for £5. DH bought one so his friend who doesn't drive could take his daughter out with them one day

dreamingofsun · 11/12/2018 18:51

someone who smokes cigarettes heavily around kids, and also weed is an awful parent, even without the money aspect. good for you for not getting embroiled in their bad parenting and i hope you get into the police. with the background you are describing you sound like you could be a really understanding copper.

dont let them needle you via text. just draw a line under things now. no way do you want to lose your license and ruin your future for people twice your age who should know better

StephenQueenBooks · 11/12/2018 18:51

godrest I don't even want any so he'll be in for a shock, my ovary wisdom will never be used! Grin

OP posts:
diddl · 11/12/2018 18:56

Wouldn't it be terrible if someone reported them?

Nicknacky · 11/12/2018 18:58

hell This journey meets none of those exemptions.
