To think Scotland should be allowed to leave the UK and remain in the EU

New poll says that most Scots think they would be better off leaving the UK after brexit. It's time they had another vote right?

Hear hear Rona, Nyx and Itsall.

Still haven't heard a reason for WM being so desperately keen to stop Scotland becoming independent if Scotland is such a drain / beggar / subsidy junky.

Maybe WM need Scotland's resources and money. McCrone Report anyone?

IMO Scotland needs to teach its children our history and politics. It needs its own media. We need a balanced debate about independence (in or out of EU) without interference from any other country. The reason none of that happens is because WM have a vested interest in keeping us from believing we can thrive.

Having said all that. If WM pull article 50 and Brexit is cancelled altogether the mandate for another independence referendum would cease to be (at least the current reason for the conversation, Brexit, would no longer be valid). I want independence for Scotland but I would be relieved if that happened. I feel awful for those in England and Wales (who don't even have the hope of independence) who would be stuck in the horror of a hard Brexit.

TheNavigator · 12/12/2018 18:16

It is not just WM that is 'desperately keen' to maintain the Union, the majority of Scots also want to remain within the UK and that hasn't changed. It is not WM 'vested interest' that maintains the Union, it is the settled will of the Scots, as established through a democratic process.

ForalltheSaints · 12/12/2018 18:25

I would like Scotland to be an independent nation. I feel it is separately cultural. I don't think the Scots would vote for it at present though.

Calyx · 12/12/2018 19:11

TheNavigator. 'Settled will of the people' - following Project Fear. Admitted after the fact by some of the perpetrators. Labour phoning pensioners and saying their pensions would stop after indy. Employers telling staff to vote No or else. The Vow. WM not letting Scotland have its own broadcaster. And on and on.

GirlsBlouse17 · 12/12/2018 19:52

I don't want Scotland to separate from the UK but if it was what the people of Scotland felt was right for them, then they should go for it. I would be happy for Brexit to be reversed though if that would keep us all together.

TheNavigator · 12/12/2018 20:16

Calyx you patronise people if you do not think they were capable of making up their own minds about independence. We are not so stupid and cowed that we cannot exercise our secret ballot in the way we truly wish. Scotland doesn't want independence, not then, not now. We didn't vote to remain in the UK out of stupidity and fear but for our own good reasons, which should and must respect.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/12/2018 20:17

We didn't vote to remain in the UK out of stupidity and fear but for our own good reasons, which should and must respect.

So you are saying that the question has been asked, people voted, so it shouldn't be asked again?

How do you feel about the General Election?

TheNavigator · 12/12/2018 20:28

It was a once in a lifetime referendum, not a General Election, so that is a pointless comparison. Or do you want to keep asking the question every 5 years? Seriously?

zsazsajuju · 12/12/2018 20:31

I think there would be loads to gain for Scotland by leaving the uk and remaining in the EU. They could really take some of the financial services from London and some manufacturing too. It’s a prime opportunity, not to be missed.

Nyx · 12/12/2018 20:31

A once in a lifetime referendum, really? Is that a legal term? Hmm

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 12/12/2018 20:33

Or do you want to keep asking the question every 5 years? Seriously?

Why not? If Scots don't want the question asked they'll stop voting in the SNP.

zsazsajuju · 12/12/2018 20:36

Quite right it’sall, democracy is not a one off.

TheNavigator · 12/12/2018 20:54

So we vote to leave, make plans, then 5 years later there is another vote and we vote to stay, cancel the plans. Then 5 years on another vote? So we decide to leave/stay every 5 years? You think that is a good idea? Sheesh.

SilverySurfer · 12/12/2018 20:57

Still haven't heard a reason for WM being so desperately keen to stop Scotland becoming independent if Scotland is such a drain / beggar / subsidy junky.

It's not Westminster being keen to stop independence, it's your fellow Scots who voted No.

Calyx · 12/12/2018 21:01

TheNavigator. No-one who has voted for and gained independence from Britain has ever voted for it back. On the contrary it's celebrated.

Calyx · 12/12/2018 21:04

I do believe some voted no out of fear. My mother and other family members included. Pensioners and care home residents included. Patronising or not.

Those 'proud' Scots who voted otherwise out of other reasons- I don't understand. Being in this union has been and increasingly is a disaster for people in Scotland.

TheNavigator · 12/12/2018 21:12

People can vote for any reason they wish - they don't need your approval that their reason is good enough - that is democracy. I firmly believe, having witness the Brexit debacle, if we voted to leave we would need the opportunity to change our mind - and we would. However it is a moot point as most of us want to stay part of the UK.

ElainaElephant · 12/12/2018 21:25

*I know Northern Ireland isn't part of GB.

Sigh indeed*

I do apologise. It truly wasn't clear from your post. You also are under the misapprehension that Scotland isn't a country in its own right, so its not unreasonable to think that you might not be aware.

Glad that's clarified.

DeltaG · 12/12/2018 22:02

I'm under no misapprehensions. Dear oh dear, please do try harder. It really isn't that difficult.

ElainaElephant · 12/12/2018 22:18

That's good, I'm glad we've managed to clarify things for you.

Earthmover · 13/12/2018 03:01

*Eh? Decision for EU referendum Feb 2016 www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-33141819

IndyRef Sept 2014 hmm*

That's the date of the article😅😆

Scroll down the page and try reading the time line. Cameron promised the UK a vote on EU membership if they won the next election during a speech in 2013.

This fact was well publicised more than a few times during the 2014 Indy ref.

So... Anyone that actually chose to open their ears before entering the ballot box was well aware that the EU Ref was on the cards.

Earthmover · 13/12/2018 03:25

If the SNP got their way and independence was granted after the rest of the UK left the EU then anyone from the EU wishing to make themselves at home in GB is going to be restricted to Scotland as a destination.

Does this idea not worry anyone? Even just a little bit?

What kind of numbers could our schools, hospitals, GP surgeries, social services, housing etc etc etc cope with before they ceased to be manageable?

When you look at the living standards of the average Romanian or Bulgarian, things would have to get pretty desperate before they'd choose to return home.

I'd imagine a country of 5 million trying to accommodate a 200,000 annual increase in population is surely going to find that a serious struggle?

Nyx · 13/12/2018 07:36

Oh here, earthmover, you dropped your dog whistle

Calyx · 13/12/2018 07:38
Grin
Calyx · 13/12/2018 07:41

Immigration is needed and welcomed here in Scotland. We need the people and we need their taxes. Our population is falling fast.
