Hello I'm pregnant with DC3, and me and DH have started speaking about names. I love the name Eddie for a girl but can't think of a longer version for the full name. Family hate this name as its a boys name. Do you think its a bad choice?

Also please could I have suggestions on names like Eddie, Tori (full name Victoria), and Margot (full name Margret).

Sasha is a pet name for Alexander

masktaster · 09/12/2018 16:14

Diana it's short for Aleksandr/Aleksandra

I really like ‘boys’ names for girls! I love Persephone shortened to Percy/Persie, and I also quite like Robyn shortened to Bobby. I also really like Brett (after a female character from a novel, although it’s normally a boys name) but I think it’s a bit harsh sounding for a baby.

I don’t think Eddie is especially masculine sounding (I’ve never met a male Eddie over the age of about 5), but I’m not a fan at all of Edwina. Do really like Edith and Meredith though Smile

BJacks86 · 09/12/2018 16:24

We live in Cheshire I'm an accountant and my husbands an engineer - I don't know where you work Burgh maybe the 1950s?

It's not that I'm trying to make any kind of point I just like these names that are a little different but aren't crazy out there.

And yes Sasha is a Russian boys name but I think seen to be a girls name in England but always loved it :)

I like Stevie for a girl, as in Stevie Smith (though I know that wasn't her actual name.) Please not Persephone, though - her myth is beautiful but quite disturbing.

Amaaboutthis · 09/12/2018 16:36

Eddie is so fine for a girl. It’s a million times better than most of the ridiculous names on the baby name board

Oh and Noa is very much a proper girls name.

Thehop · 09/12/2018 16:40

My friend likes boys names for girls

She has Francesca known as frankie and Isabella known as billie

Thehop · 09/12/2018 16:41

Meredith would shorten to eddie

Burgh · 09/12/2018 16:44

I work in Finance as does my husband and I now these names wouldn't fly - you aren't in LA.

GiGi18 · 09/12/2018 16:52

You could probably use Theodora for nicknames Eddie, Teddie, or Theo. I love unisex names too. Also like Frankie with full name Francesca and Quinn

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/12/2018 17:08

Wtf are you talking about @Burgh?

The name Eddie ‘wouldn’t fly’ in finance? Are you serious?

Maybe your company needs to stop discriminating against people whose names they don’t like. Children don’t choose them and they eventually grow to be adults.

And you didn’t know Sasha is a boys name? Is everyone as ignorant where you work?

(OP - I think Sasha is fine for a girl btw!)

n0ne · 09/12/2018 22:06

I love Edna suggested up thread, and Edwina is nice too. Eddie is a fine nn for either name.

crazytiredboth · 09/12/2018 22:17

I knew a Frieda who was often Freddie. I thought that was lovely. (She was in her 80s!)

DontCallMeCharlotte · 10/12/2018 08:08

Sorry to be blunt but Edna is the most hideous name on the planet. My opinion (and I accept it is only an opinion) is possibly coloured by my poor Mum being called Edna - born in the 20s. She hated it and she changed it as soon as she left home.

MiseryLoves · 10/12/2018 08:38

I’ll see your Edna, and raise you Phyllis as the most hideous.

Darkbendis · 10/12/2018 09:28

Sasha is also the short form for Alexander in Germany and Austria.

RandomObject · 10/12/2018 10:04

Nothing like some horrific gender stereotyping eh!

Eddie is fine, quite fun for a girl. Some traditionally boys names do work well for girls, and Eddie is one of them. Do the horrified lot on here also disapprove of Alex and Jamie for girls? Very common.

MsSquiz · 10/12/2018 11:15

Edina or Edwina to Eddie
Francesca to Frankie
Charlotte to Charlie
Georgia or Georgina to George
Roberta or Robyn to Rob or Robbie
Josephine to Jo or Joey

AndItStillSaidFourOfTwo · 10/12/2018 11:33

One of Anne of Green Gables' college friends was a Phil, from Philippa.

LadyOttoline · 10/12/2018 13:59

The name Eddie ‘not flying in finance’ - what a superbly bonkers remark.

OP, I like more traditionally boyish names for girls too, and I suspect we’ll see more of them in the next few years. IMO it’s far preferable a style to the ubiquitous ‘fluffy’ names like Lily, Petal, Honey, etc. Bobby is lovely as many posters have suggested - also Billie, Teddy, Harry, Stevie. Surely you can call your daughter Eddie as her nickname at home and if she really hates it, she can go for Edie? I absolutely love the name Edith but it’s not for everyone.
Either way, call her what you want to call her when you meet her - don’t listen to people saying you ‘can’t’.

Whyislarryhappy · 10/12/2018 14:10

MiseryLoves

Close but no cigar!

My hopes were raised when the OP said her daughter (at least I presume it's her daughter!) is called Victoria eith Tori for short which are both lovely until "Vinnie" raised its ugly head!

It begs the question - which I'm sure has been asked a million times - should we name children for ourselves or for them?

BJacks86 · 10/12/2018 20:13

Shes called Vinnie within the family, we didn't sign her up to nursery and say call her Vinnie. Obviously we predominantly call her Tori its a pet name.

Find it bizarre would you rather send your child to school with 10 other Ava's/Emily's and have them called by Ava Lastname.

Additionally as stated I want more 'normal' names on a birth certificate, and both my daughters have pretty traditional family middle names.

Names wouldn't fly in finance, I work in a bank don't think the name Eddie would stop someone (especially in 20 years) getting hired when they have all the skills required for a role.
