Hello I'm pregnant with DC3, and me and DH have started speaking about names. I love the name Eddie for a girl but can't think of a longer version for the full name. Family hate this name as its a boys name. Do you think its a bad choice?

Also please could I have suggestions on names like Eddie, Tori (full name Victoria), and Margot (full name Margret).

Thomasina nn Tommie/Tommy is my first choice for a girl, and Tommy is definitely a boys name. I don't think Eddie is so different. I love longer feminine names with boy-ish nicknames. Francesca nn Frankie i also like. I can't think of any other examples off the top of my head but I remember a thread a while ago with loads of great examples.

I love it OP - so much better than friggin Harriet which seems to be MN name of the month!! James I would of considered to boyish but Eddie is a lovely sounding name for a little girl. I liked Andie for DD2, DP said no. 0 taste! Wink

Mrsfrumble · 08/12/2018 23:20

obviously in a minority thinking times are changing and you can name kids opposite gender/gender neutral names.

I do wonder though, when people talk about this on here, why it’s always in the context of giving traditionally male names to baby girls. In all my years on MN, I’ve never seen a poster asking if they should call their son Charlotte, Sophie or Alison. Are (traditionally) men’s names just better than (traditionally) women’s?

AuntieStella · 08/12/2018 23:21

I know an Eddie (Edwina in full) and I think it's fine as a nickname.

FrogFairy · 08/12/2018 23:26

Edrianna also shortens to Eddie.

DianaBlythe · 08/12/2018 23:28

I worked with a lovely Portuguese woman known as Eddie which was short for Edurne I think.

StoneofDestiny · 08/12/2018 23:28

Never met a boy called Rowan, but met plenty of girls called it.
Know of girl called Frances who is known by all as Frank
Eddie doesn't sound particularly male to me.

DianaBlythe · 08/12/2018 23:30

Edna hasn’t made a comeback in the same way as some of the other granny chic names but it wouldn’t be as out there now as it would have been 10-15 years ago!

BlueJag · 08/12/2018 23:34

Edieneh
Edina.

There are various feminine names assigned to men. Marilyn Manson. John Wayne's real name was Marion.Evelyn Waugh. There are men called Lindsay and Lesley. Johnny Cash wrote about a boy named Sue What about Stacy Keach?

Who knows we're name trends will end up - so many people now call their kids after places, plants, seasons of the year, geographical features or use surnames.

Who would have though Sidney would be popular for girls a few years ago (with a slight spelling change).

StoneofDestiny · 08/12/2018 23:39

Call her Edinburgh - shortened to Edi.

PippilottaLongstocking · 08/12/2018 23:45

I like Noa (without the H) for a girl and Frankie short for Frances (I know girls with both those names and no one bats an eyelid)
Also Stevie works for a girl, like Stevie Nicks. I’d guess it was short for Stephanie.

I think Eddie is fine for a girl though, short for Edwina

LittleScottieDog · 09/12/2018 00:12

@StoneofDestiny Marilyn Manson is his stage name, after Marilyn Monroe and Charles Manson. All the members of the band have similarly made-up names.

StoneofDestiny · 09/12/2018 00:14

I know - but he is using a 'feminine' name and it's accepted

DontCallMeCharlotte · 09/12/2018 00:30

Also it's Robyn for a girl, Robin is a boys name.

My Aunty Robin would beg to differ.

Come on OP, let's see your list for boys!

LittleScottieDog · 09/12/2018 00:40

I think a stage name is a bit different, though, when it comes to accepting a name. It's like accepting a made-up name in a book.

Mrsfrumble · 09/12/2018 08:17

Marilyn Manson’s real name is actually Brian Grin

BikeRunSki · 09/12/2018 08:25

Edelweiss ? No Idea if this is used as a name, but many flowers are.

BJacks86 · 09/12/2018 15:16

In relation to traditional male names for girls, my boys names are pretty feminine - although I'm a fan of classic boys names, I don't think I'd go for one.

My top boys names that have been revised and changed ever since getting pregnant with DD1 4 years ago are Sasha, Jules and Eden. Also quite like Rory, Indie and Aria.

Time will tell if DC3 is a girl or a boy, waiting till the birth to find out so having to debate and decide on both again!

I guess its also worth pointing out that my DD2 gets called Vinny all the time - even though her name is Victoria (we call her Tori). My DH started jokingly calling her Vincent when she was a baby that turned into Vinny and is yet to stop...

That being said we would obviously stop calling them names they didn't like if they asked but haven't particularly seen any name backlash except from people over 30. Most of my younger family like our name choices, so wonder if its related to a generational thing.

OP posts:
Burgh · 09/12/2018 15:45

Eddie is a stupid name, and you ARE asking for your kids to get bullied. Margot and Victoria are names of royals and you want to call a little girl Eddie or a boy Sasha...

Why don't go classic like Charlotte? Whats wrong with traditional names, or maybe if you have a son call him Eddie?!

Burgh · 09/12/2018 15:49

I'm curious as to where you live and what you and DH do, because I know if I went into work and said here is my new baby girl Eddie/James/Noah I would be met by confusion and my husbands colleagues even more so!

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/12/2018 15:57

Personally I don’t like it. It feels like trying really hard to shoehorn a celebrity type name into the family.

I think Elodie is a beautiful name, and while I wouldn’t personally use Eddie as a nickname it would work. Better than Edwina which is a horrible name imo.

NameChangeOhNameChange1 · 09/12/2018 16:04

Why would you give your boys female/feminine names and your girls male names? What point are you trying to make?

DianaPrincessOfThemyscira · 09/12/2018 16:06

Sasha is a boys name btw @Burgh. I think Russian? It’s a diminutive of another name although I forget which.
