Hello I'm pregnant with DC3, and me and DH have started speaking about names. I love the name Eddie for a girl but can't think of a longer version for the full name. Family hate this name as its a boys name. Do you think its a bad choice?

Also please could I have suggestions on names like Eddie, Tori (full name Victoria), and Margot (full name Margret).

If you’re going to name a girl Eddie, her full name could only be Sweetie Darling Sweetie Bolly Darling Lunch In Harrods Just Need To Pop Into The Office It’s LaCroix Sweetie! (Exclamation is part of the name, of course).

Lovingbenidorm · 08/12/2018 18:16

Why not go totally Disworld and call her Magrat?

Lovingbenidorm · 08/12/2018 18:17

*Discworld

It’s an awful name for a girl.

She’s not going to thank you when she grows up. Seriously, give her a proper name.

PossiblyPFB · 08/12/2018 18:34

I like Edwina pronounced Ed-WIN-a rather than Ed-WEEN-a and Meredith as a solid second.

slappinthebass · 08/12/2018 18:43

How about
Theodora (Teddy/Ted/Eddie/Theo/Thea)
Persephone (nn Percy rather than Sephy)
Roberta (nn Bertie)
Mattes or Matilda nn Matty
Thomasina nn Tom/Tommy
Charlotte nn Charlie
Josephine nn Joey/Jo/Josie
Francesca nn Frankie
Olwen nn Ollie
I know a baby Samantha known as Sammie

Or traditionally unisex names such as
Robin
Rowan
Elliot

I like the nn Aggie from Agnes but not keen on Agnes in full.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 08/12/2018 18:47

I googled ED names, Edlynne is pretty.

Ceecee18 · 08/12/2018 18:51

I like the idea a pp suggested of Meredith, I think you could get away with Eddie as a nickname for it.

LittleScottieDog · 08/12/2018 18:54

I know two Edwinas, both of whom use Eddie as a shortened version. I think it's a great name, no-one ever confuses them with boys and they aren't constantly explaining themselves! People on here are weird for saying you can't have a girl called Eddie - just because they haven't met any, but they do exist!

I once knew a girl given just the shortened version of a long name that could be for a boy or girl (like just being called Eddie, not actually short for Edward or Edwina). Now she did have to explain herself at school because people just assumed it was short for the boy's version. But it wasn't.

Eddie short for Edwina - go for it OP!

annoyedpiggy · 08/12/2018 19:00

Oohhh I love Etta nickname Ettie.

Monkeynuts18 · 08/12/2018 19:13

How about Harriet which you could shorten to Harry? She’d then have a beautiful ‘real’ name for when she’s an adult and it would satisfy your desire to call her by a boy’s name.

CheerfulMuddler · 08/12/2018 19:45

Edna

CoatTails · 08/12/2018 20:02

Teacher here. I’ve known a Melody and an Elodie who both shortened to Eddy/Eddie.

EyUpOurKid · 08/12/2018 20:37

Ettie? Similar enough to Eddie bit a girls name and lovely?

I love Edina nn Eddie.

WhyAmISoCold · 08/12/2018 20:54

"Or traditionally unisex names such as
Robin
Rowan
Elliot"

Oh yes, that girls name Elliot Hmm. It's a boys name, as is Rowan. Also it's Robyn for a girl, Robin is a boys name.

I feel so sorry for children these days with the amount of idiotic names given to them, usually complete with spelling that makes the parent appear illiterate.

LittleScottieDog · 08/12/2018 22:37

About 20 years ago I knew a girl called Rowan. It's not some newfangled thing. It's a lovely name.

TheMagician · 08/12/2018 22:39

I like Edie (eedee) but Eddie for a girl is bad. I agree with your in-laws.

Chocolatecake12 · 08/12/2018 22:44

How about Addie? Short for Addison?

AllezOops · 08/12/2018 22:45

The singer Eddi Reader’s real first name is apparently Sadenia. So you don’t necessarily have to have an ‘obvious’ longer name for the nickname.

BJacks86 · 08/12/2018 22:58

Thanks everyone for your comments, majorly surprised by the backlash to the name Eddie- I don't think its particularly masculine and curious who worried about there child be mistaken for a boy for there entire life.. All babies are mistaken for the wrong gender. Additionally people said my first two DDs would dislike there names and that hasn't been the case (Margot and Victoria shortened to Tori), and my husband likes the name Eddie I'm not just obsessed with calling my kids a boys name.

As for Abfab, I think the reference is going to get increasing uncommon and I don't think its an inherently bad reference.

I really like Ettie, Elliot and Aggie!

Elodie

ImportantWater · 08/12/2018 23:06

Oh yes that girls name Elliot

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elliot_Reid

FrogFairy · 08/12/2018 23:07

Edith could be shortened to Eddie.

moredoll · 08/12/2018 23:08

Frances nn Frankie
Charlotte nn Charlie

bit of a stretch but maybe Astrid, nn Eddie

Whatjusthappenedthere · 08/12/2018 23:12

I know a lovely young lady called Eddie by everyone but her full name is Edwina.
