To ask if your partner eats loudly?

DH is making too much noise when eating. He's only started doing it so loudly recently. We're talking slapping his chops and swallowing really loudly. If he has carrot stick on his plate the crunching is unbearable.

I turn the TV up but he is blissfully unaware.

AIBU to tell him his eating noises are bothering me?

YANBU. The noise of my DH eating drives me round the bend. I can't say anything though because if I do, I'll basically have turned into my mother and that's worse.

Betaday · 07/12/2018 19:30

There’s a name for this. It’s a thing. I turn the stereo up too. Didn’t used to bother me. Now it grinds my chops!

Disfordarkchocolate · 07/12/2018 19:32

I hate being in the same room when my husband eats anything crunchy. He chomps away while I consider stabbing him. The worse thing is it's usually when he eats a toasty, and I bought the bloody toasty machine. I must have been insane.

tenredthings · 07/12/2018 19:34

YADNBU ! The sound of my husband eating has driven me mad every day and we've been married many years ! He comes and looks at things over my shoulder whilst chomping loudly with sucky in breaths and a clicky jaw. It's a miracle that I've Manage to suppress the extreme levels of irritability it unleashes in me .

soundsgreektome · 07/12/2018 19:36

I have found my people. My parents in law do this. It’s horrible. I warned my dh years ago not to eat like them. We laughed. As if - he said.

He’s worse than the pair of them together.

We have a Christmas meal with them next weekend. It will be horrendous.

cowfacemonkey · 07/12/2018 19:37

Yup makes me murderous. I try to keep the extractor fan on during dinner but apparently it makes his tinnitus bad.

DoneLikeAKipper · 07/12/2018 19:38

Betaday there is a condition called misophonia, but I think a lot of men also eat in the way the op describes. I don’t think that many women suffer from misophonia!

I’ve had to start putting the radio on when my partner eats. He sounds like a donkey with a sinus infection with every slurpy:lip smacking bite. Goes right through me, but it’s only with his eating!

Ilovealexa · 07/12/2018 19:42

A woman at work does which is worse cos I can’t even tell her to stop being a weird creepy freak

CheesebiscuitsWine · 07/12/2018 19:47

My teenage son does it.... omg aggggggggghhhh trying to control the rage! I know its irrational but agggghhhhhh!!!!!

chumbal · 07/12/2018 19:55

Yep mine too!

Tempted to stab him or perforate my ear drums Grin

Lymphy · 07/12/2018 19:56

Yes! He even eats yoghurt loudly, bloody yoghurt! He looks shifty when eating apples as well

JiltedJohnsJulie · 07/12/2018 19:59

My DH gets a big bowl of crunchy cereal every fucking evening. I’ve asked him numerous times to eat it in the kitchen. I’m not sure I can refrain myself from murdering him some day soon.

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 07/12/2018 20:02

OMG, you are my tribe! I love my DH (married for 22 years now) but I swear to god when he sits next to me not he sofa in the evening, and gets up to get an orang, my heart sinks. I have to press surreptitiously against the ear that's nearest him to block the slappy-chom-chomp noise out. Aaaargh!! His mouth is closed so it's not like he's a sloppy eater - far from it - it's just the noise his eating makes IYKWM? I know it's loud cos the kids complain about it too. Poor DH, but FFS! Is it age related - He never used to be this noisy?

whoseafraidofnaomiwolf · 07/12/2018 20:02

Cereal? Don't even get me started....

lljkk · 07/12/2018 20:03

I am a noisy eater. My whole office is noisy eaters, I reckon, though I may be the worst offender.

sabrinathethirtysomethingwitch · 07/12/2018 20:05

My DM rings me and proceeds to chomp and slurp her way through the phone call. ARGHHHHHHH. I said it to her once and she still does it Angry

DoingMyBest2010 · 07/12/2018 20:06

sounds like misophonia, I have it. Hearing people eat loudly makes me want to scream.

bilbodog · 07/12/2018 20:06

Im with you here - my DH the same - why, why?

formerbabe · 07/12/2018 20:06

Oh god me too...also it's a recent thing...I don't remember him eating loudly when we first met. Honestly, sometimes I have to leave the room...I physically can't bear it.

HippoEvans · 07/12/2018 20:09

LOL glad I am not the only one getting incredibly cross!

OP posts:
HippoEvans · 07/12/2018 20:09

I even chomped really loudly next to his ear to see how he would react - he just thought it was funny!!!

OP posts:
BonBonVoyage · 07/12/2018 20:10

Mine is the same. I want to shout at him. Every so often I mention it but he doesn't understand how awful it is

CressidaCrisis · 07/12/2018 20:13

Mine’s the same, I’ve told him a thousand times how noisy he is. I’ve had to stop saying anything as he just gets cross.

needasleep · 07/12/2018 20:13

I feel your pain my DH seems to be getting worse it is the big breath before every bite that gets me then the crunching. I can't cope anymore

WhiteVixen · 07/12/2018 20:14

Yes. My heart sinks a little every time he reaches for the cereal, or takes an apple from the fruit bowl. And as for crisps...

How we’ve lasted ten years together I’ll never know..
