To ask if your partner eats loudly?

DH is making too much noise when eating. He's only started doing it so loudly recently. We're talking slapping his chops and swallowing really loudly. If he has carrot stick on his plate the crunching is unbearable.

I turn the TV up but he is blissfully unaware.

AIBU to tell him his eating noises are bothering me?

lljkk

Can you not help it!?

katseyes7 · 07/12/2018 20:22

l can't bear it! l've been at a friend's house and her husband (who l love dearly) makes the most horrific noises when he's eating. l always try to manoeuvre sitting as far away from him as possible.

l had a colleague who'd have none of it, though. We worked in an emergency services call centre type office, but not dealing with the public. lf someone called in on the phone and they were obviously eating while talking to her, she would say in no uncertain terms "Would you like to call back when you've finished whatever it is you're eating? l can't concentrate on inputting your information because of the noise you're making!" l used to cringe but it did the trick!

hidinginthenightgarden · 07/12/2018 20:25

OMG yes! Only started noticing the extent recently when he started eating fruit. Oh god the noise makes me nauseous.

mommybear1 · 07/12/2018 20:29

Anyone eating loudly annoys me but DH irks me as he KNOWS he does it and to add insult to injury he has a jaw click- FML 😖

ClinkyMonkey · 07/12/2018 20:40

DP sounds like a mulching machine when he eats. It's all very wet and squelchy. I have never said anything in all the years we've been together and sometimes wonder if I sound equally annoying and he isn't saying anything either. It's weird because I've never held back when it comes to pointing out his other annoying habits!

nickiredcar · 07/12/2018 20:41

My DH is lovely, but as soon as he starts eating I want to stab him to death :(

CallMeOnMyCell · 07/12/2018 20:44

I understand that it’s unpleasant but all these so called noisy eaters can’t help it! Of course there are some people who chew with their mouth open etc but most people are just eating and not thinking about how noisy they are being. My DP says I eat loudly and now I’m uncomfortable eating around him as he visibly cringes when I eat. There is nothing I can do about it!

Sparklesocks · 07/12/2018 20:46

My DP does - he doesn’t even know he’s doing it. After years I don’t notice it as much, but occasionally I’ll tune into some loud crunching and I’m all HmmHmm

goteam · 07/12/2018 20:52

Oh fuckinghell just had to sit through DH eating. The open mouth, lip smacking, loud chomping. Urgh. we live in a small flat so no separate kitchen. He isn't like this when we eat out, just at home. Too comfortable I imagine. I seethe in silence but am going to crack one day soon.

KatnissMellark · 07/12/2018 20:54

Mine doesn't anymore. I can't confirm whether thats because I buried him under the patio or he's learnt to control his chopsing due to my (totally legitimate) rage. YANBU.

boringlyboring · 07/12/2018 20:58

I have just said to dp ‘can you make anymore noise!!?’

He doesn’t smack his lips, he chews with mouth closed. But my God, I don’t know how, but it’s like the chewing echoes from
the inside. It sounds really animated, like cartoon chewing/crunching.

And then he took a big swallow of juice, and the gulping. The fucking gulping.

I have two in my life.

First one is coming for Christmas. They chew loudly, clack their cutlery and their plate and scrape their fork across their teeth. Poor DC hates it so I'll have to say something.

Second one is a colleague. They snack all chuffing day. In an hour long meeting NOT at lunch time they ate yoghurt (scrapped the pot and licked the lid), crisps, a sandwich, tangerine and brought out a bar of chocolate which they didn't get around to. Chomping and lip smacking throughout.

TechnicalSergeantGarp · 07/12/2018 21:07

Oh chews and gulps cups of tea.

littlemeitslyn · 07/12/2018 21:07

Donkey with sinus 😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

blackteasplease · 07/12/2018 21:12

Dd does it and it kills me

nickiredcar · 07/12/2018 21:12

Agree with colleagues, I've got one that eats peanuts individually for what feels like hours. I've no idea how she makes so much noise. I have lots of toilet breaks.

gamerchick · 07/12/2018 21:14

OP if he's just started doing it could he be doing with say visiting a dentist for a checkup or getting his hearing checked maybe? There might be a reason... Sinus issues?

I may be clutching at straws Grin

cowfacemonkey · 07/12/2018 21:29

Oh god yes tea drinking. Simultaneous slurp and loud inhale of breath, pantomime gulp and repeat and repeat and fucking repeat. He's upstairs right now without food or beverage and just thinking about itmakes me want to march up there and throat punch him Liam Neeson a la Taken style

Pixie2015 · 07/12/2018 21:32

Listening to others eat apples, spaghetti and crisps really grates on me arrrghhh

DoubleNegativePanda · 07/12/2018 21:33

He did. Now his new wife has to deal with his deafening slurping and chomping.

I don't miss him at all, and that's just one small reason!

golddustwomen · 07/12/2018 21:35

My oh eats like a fucking pig. So loud and draws food in with his tongue. Knocking me sick just thinking about it. I physically can't be near him when he eats cereal because I think I would stab him.

thereallifesaffy · 07/12/2018 21:39

My DH does this. I cannot be in the same room when he eats toast or apples. He's like a slobbery horse. I think he needs to close his mouth before he crunches. That would help. And his tongue. Sweet Jesus he does not need to use his tongue to pull food in.

thereallifesaffy · 07/12/2018 21:41

And does anyone else's OH drink tea or coffee and let out an ahhh type sound after swallowing? I think it's an age thing. He's 56 and didn't do this 20 years ago.

howdyho · 07/12/2018 21:45

Reading this thread has made me laugh so much! And I feel your pain.

PorpentinaScamander · 07/12/2018 21:50

Yep! DP is so loud when he eats. Is a mixture of taking such large bites that he can't close his mouth and, I can't explain what else. I'd say breathing but it's more than that. Like he inhales through his mouth, which is fill of food. Makes me murderous.
