To be in shock about what a delivery driver just did??

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:16

Happy to be told IABU but a delivery driver pulled up outside my house, I was in the kitchen washing up so saw him walking down the path, I waited for the knock to go and answer but instead they just OPENED MY FRONT DOOR and placed the parcel in the hallway.

Usually the door is locked but I have a handyman in fixing our shower so have left it unlocked so he can come and go to his van as he needs.

I am not over reacting, this is shocking right???? I had my 4 year old playing in the front room who screamed when she saw the man.

I ran out and confronted them, telling him it was not acceptable to just open a persons front door and they should have knocked and waited, he responded that it is raining...WTAF?

Just sent a rather ranty email to the delivery company he works for and my DH is equally shocked as is the handyman who heard me shouting and rushed down to see if everything was ok.

I would never dream of opening the front door of people I know well, so why would they think it is ok to enter a house of strangers.

Am 4 weeks from my due date and have been slightly irrational so happy to be told I am OTT here.

YANBU. Yodel?

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:19

@Finfintytint no UKMail, part of DHL...am still shaking a bit but not sure if it is anger or the fact it scared me

My postman did this once too, I complained too.

Finfintytint · 07/12/2018 10:21

My dog would have bitten him if a stranger walked in unannounced.

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:22

@Oopsy41 it is such an invasion of privacy, I just can not get my head around why they think this is acceptable.

Totally off, could absolutely terrify someone thinking they had an intruder. If anyone did that to me they’d be face to face with a very large outraged dog. So not safe either.

Mulberry72 · 07/12/2018 10:22

YANBU, that’s not on.

Had it been me and I’d seen him making his way down the path I’d have gone to the front door and opened it ready for him, but that’s just me.

fireplacetiles · 07/12/2018 10:22

Pretty common sadly, have had several delivery companies do this at mine, front door is firmly locked now!

Nursejackie1 · 07/12/2018 10:22

Don't leave it unlocked then. Sorry but you got your parcel I don't see the big deal unless he came in made himself at home and sat down with a cuppa and a biscuit.

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:23

@Finfintytint we only have a tiny pug but it would have served him right if she had bitten him.

I have read this story before, a few weeks ago.

HowlsMovingBungalow · 07/12/2018 10:23

Had this with Royal Mail, I was in the shower when my delivery was left in my hallway.

ElfridaEtAl · 07/12/2018 10:24

YANBU. The same thing happened to my mum & dad once.

I don't know if it's just because I have anxiety but it would make me feel so on edge if it happened to me.

BarbarianMum · 07/12/2018 10:24

You saw him coming but instead if going to the door to meet him, you were hapoy to let him stand waiting in the rain? Nice.

YANBU to complain but honestly, just keep your door locked.

LilySays · 07/12/2018 10:25

Urgh I can’t stand this. I’ve had delivery people just walk in through the back gate before and knock on the back door when I’ve been breastfeeding or expressing with my boobs out! So rude.

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:25

@Nursejackie1 thanks for reading my OP properly, as I stated my door is firmly locked 99% of the time, but for the 2 hours my handyman was here I did not expect to have to worry about a delivery driver coming in to my house.

You may find it acceptable for someone to enter your house to deliver a parcel, we obviously have very different views on this.

EdisonLightBulb · 07/12/2018 10:25

My postman has also done it, twice. The first time I thought I maybe hadn't closed the door properly and it was left ajar, the second time I heard it open and close.

I locked it after that. Who seriously thinks that this is OK? I cant imagine.

Sexnotgender · 07/12/2018 10:26

YANBU, I’d be very upset if someone did that to me.

fredleighton · 07/12/2018 10:28

He probably thought he was doing you a favour by not leaving it out in the rain and opening the door and popping it on the doormat. He shouldn't have done it and I can see why you might be upset but it's not the end of the world.

And I don't understand why you didn't go and answer the door when you saw him walking up the path in the rain.

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:29

Thanks for all your comments, I thought I was going mad and it is actually quite crazy that this happens a lot.

For those of you saying I should have met him at the door I was at my kitchen door (a second away from the front door when he just opened it) he had no intention of knocking so won't accept I am in the wrong here.

I will wait to see what they come back with but surely this is not something that delivery companies suggest as appropriate delivery methods.

Satsumaeater · 07/12/2018 10:31

Some people have an outside porch/area where you can open the door and leave parcels - it might not be the only door.

I agree it's risky for the driver as they may get bitten by a dog but I couldn't get too overexcited about it. My door is locked from the outside anyway so they can't do it to me.

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:31

Just to say the parcel was in a waterproof bag and it was not raining heavily.

OP posts:
KayM2 · 07/12/2018 10:32

Bit complex, isn't it? We complain if they leave stuff in bins or in the rain. I leave instructions about leaving things in my little porch, but tbh they sometimes ignore that and leave stuff outside.

I'd guess that they would look at the door and try it, on the principle that if it is unlocked they are being encouraged to put the package just inside.

It is a horrible job they have, and time to think it through might be time they don't have.

YepImafraidIchangeditagain · 07/12/2018 10:32

Maybe he thought it was a porch door?
This happened to me before and I ranted at him- he explained that he thought it was a porch door and didn't want the parcel to get wet outside.

Nursejackie1 · 07/12/2018 10:33

I did read it properly. Obviously leaving your door open whether u have someone coming in or not runs the risk of somebody other than that person opening your door which is why we lock doors. The person was there with a legitimate reason to drop off your parcel he wasnt just some random person. Job got done. Nobody got hurt. Next time either lock the door and let the worker in when they knock or don't get shocked if somebody delivering a parcel shock horror delivers a parcel.
