To be in shock about what a delivery driver just did??

ArghhhWhatToDo · 07/12/2018 10:16

Happy to be told IABU but a delivery driver pulled up outside my house, I was in the kitchen washing up so saw him walking down the path, I waited for the knock to go and answer but instead they just OPENED MY FRONT DOOR and placed the parcel in the hallway.

Usually the door is locked but I have a handyman in fixing our shower so have left it unlocked so he can come and go to his van as he needs.

I am not over reacting, this is shocking right???? I had my 4 year old playing in the front room who screamed when she saw the man.

I ran out and confronted them, telling him it was not acceptable to just open a persons front door and they should have knocked and waited, he responded that it is raining...WTAF?

Just sent a rather ranty email to the delivery company he works for and my DH is equally shocked as is the handyman who heard me shouting and rushed down to see if everything was ok.

I would never dream of opening the front door of people I know well, so why would they think it is ok to enter a house of strangers.

Am 4 weeks from my due date and have been slightly irrational so happy to be told I am OTT here.

OP I agree. The delivery person was trespassing

Sunshineonleaf · 07/12/2018 14:12

You saw him coming down the path. He probably saw you as well.
Seems like a perfectly reasonable thing to do and I really can't see what the fuss is about?

The door was closed...

feetlikeahobbit · 07/12/2018 14:23

10 mins ago I was defrosting the freezer and came into the hall and there was a stack of parcels and post, I didn't hear a thing neither did DH or the dog.

I always thought the dog was pretty good but am now reviewing her Christmas present. DH has always been useless.

Aloethere · 07/12/2018 14:25

My postman does this all the time, I don't mind. He literally just opens the door places the parcel down and closes the door behind him. I really don't see the big deal. The postwoman before him used to do the same so I think it is pretty standard here.
I'm in Ireland though so maybe it is different here.

IACGMOOH · 07/12/2018 14:26

I am the only person on mumsnet who finds this so helpful! My old postie used to do it heaps but I moved and the new one doesn't (maybe too many people on mn complained!!) Yabu

ADastardlyThing · 07/12/2018 14:26

Would it be ok for, say, a debt collector to just open the door and let themselves in? They've got a shit job to do.

A double glazing salesman? No problem? Someone might actually want double glazing after all so its fine?

Someone collecting a parcel to be returned somewhere? Just let themselves in and look arohnd for it, they are doing you a favour right?

A taxi driver? Instead of beeping it's fine to open your door and shout for you?

You arrange for a friend of a friend to meet at yours before going out somewhere as you're giving her a lift, fine for her to just open the door and walk in?

Leaving aside whether or not someone makes the choice to lock their door ( let's say theyve left it unlocked because they are expecting their dp home any second), all the above is fine, yes?

cadburysflake · 07/12/2018 14:29

We moved house a couple of years ago and I'd never lived in a house with a porch before. Not long after we moved in we were having something delivered, I was upstairs and just heard the front door open. There was only me my toddler and newborn in the house, I shot downstairs thinking someone had walked into my house to find a parcel and a man walking back to his van. He didn't knock or ring the bell just opened the door and left it. I could understand doing this if I put a note on to say "leave in porch" but I find even this crossing the line even though it is just the porch.

You were right to complain, they are just being lazy and trying to save time waiting for people to answer.

suzy2b · 07/12/2018 14:40

I had to have my dog pts because people kept coming in my back gate she would go for any stranger there was a sign on the gate telling people not to enter a dog was loose but still they came in after the 3rd person a midwife who was here to see daughter and baby, she reported to ss

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 07/12/2018 14:40

Do you all live in really dangerous places? It would simply never occur to me that this would be a problem.

ADastardlyThing · 07/12/2018 14:45

Not particularly dangerous. Just a normal street where strangers knock on doors to homes of people they don't know, rather than just walking in uninvited.

NotUmbongoUnchained · 07/12/2018 14:47

suzy does your gate have a bell? How else are they supposed to get to the door??

BarbarianMum · 07/12/2018 14:51

Suzy did you not think either training the dog, supervising the dog or locking the gate when the dog was alone in the garden would have provided a solution?

Elphie54 · 07/12/2018 14:56

Wasn’t there an identical story a few weeks ago?

sanpelle · 07/12/2018 14:58

This literally just happened to me tooBlush I wonder if you're in the same area? Left the porch door unlocked as expecting guests and got an interior locked door. Didn't hear a knock, just my front door swinging open and slamming again. It shook the house! So rude and intrusive. Will certainly rethink getting things delivered after that as I've never told anyone to leave parcels in my porch. Just because the door is unlocked doesn't give you the right to enter someone's property. Unless you have a court writ of course

Elderflower14 · 07/12/2018 15:01

My dog would definitely have bitten someone who opened our door. We keep our doors locked most of the time now.

sonandhelpneeded · 07/12/2018 15:03

I am Hmmat people not wanting parcels left i there porch! Surely that's a major benefit of a porch?

CaliHummers · 07/12/2018 15:23

Do you all live in really dangerous places? It would simply never occur to me that this would be a problem.

I've lived in cities where, if a door was left unlocked for 2 minutes, anything light, liftable and valuable would have gone. Give them 10 mins and they could probably have stripped the place. Moving house was a nightmare because someone would have to be guarding both lorry and door all the time. Now I live somewhere way more rural where it's pretty safe.

Greyhorses · 07/12/2018 18:09

My postman also does this.

Couldn’t care less to be honest!

TheWiseWomansFear · 07/12/2018 18:28

I don't think it's acceptable but I also don't think you should have shouted at him...

Ginseng1 · 07/12/2018 18:50

Couple my delivery drivers here do it doesn't bother me

Allthewaves · 07/12/2018 18:58

I'd prefer they did that than constantly be putting parcels in my (full and stinky) wheelie bin

MereDintofPandiculation · 07/12/2018 21:59

I was upstairs and just heard the front door open. ..I shot downstairs thinking someone had walked into my house to find a parcel and a man walking back to his van. ...I find even this crossing the line even though it is just the porch. You see, that's where you lose me. To me, a porch is something which is built on the outside of the house, beyond the front door. It may have a door, but that is the porch door, not the front door of the house. The porch is there to give shelter when you are opening the front door, or when you are knocking on the front door.

JudasPrudy · 07/12/2018 22:03

Oh the DRAMA how do you cope OP Hmm
