To take Dd to Hospital

So Dd12 had a sore tummy yesterday. It's a band across her stomach from under her tummy button to the top of her thighs.

Last night she did 5 poos and vomited multiple times in the night.

This evening the pain is worse. 9.5/10. Pain killers are making no difference. Spasfon no difference either. She has a temp of 38.7. No vomit and no poo. She feels like she needs to poo. She hasn't eaten all day.

I've rung the French equivalent of 101. They said wait to see Dr. appointment at 11.45 tomorrow.

Tonight is the big student night so hospitals will be full later.

Do I go or not?

Your poor DD. I hope she makes a speedy recovery.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 10/12/2018 13:08

How's your dd doing?

Wallywobbles · 11/12/2018 07:18

Can anyone help. She is in so much pain this morning. Still no fart or poo. 72h later. She says the pain is worse the preop. Is it possible that this is her system starting up again?

Your poor daughter :(

Isn't she still in hospital?

Mooey89 · 11/12/2018 07:48

Are her infection markers still high? Ask them about Sepsis.
Hope she recovers soon x

Wallywobbles · 11/12/2018 07:53

So a very small amount of poo. More pain meds. Things slightly improved.

Wallywobbles · 11/12/2018 07:54

Yup still in hospital. Can't see how we are ever leaving with this level of pain. Still a catheter and an abdomen drain.

OP posts:
Wallywobbles · 11/12/2018 07:57

Pain killers are nubain, paracetamol and doliprane.

Temp went up to 39 yesterday. This morning at 37.7.

I think all her pain meds and antibiotics ran out at the same time and she had a bowel movement all at the same time. She's now exhausted.

Good morning. I’m a surgeon and have just seen this thread. Sorry to say the first thing I though when I read your first post was that she has appendicitis with an abscess.
It is very common after this type of problem for the guts to be slow to get going again so good that she has done a poo. You should expect her recovery to be slow with temperatures for a few more days and a distended abdomen. She may we’ll have further pockets of pus (which will be accompanied by a swinging high temp). I would expect that you will be in hospital for a few more days at least. She has been a very sick child.

Booboostwo · 11/12/2018 10:30

Your poor DD! Hope she's feeling a bit better by now and it's not too long a recovery.

InsomniacAnonymous · 11/12/2018 11:11

Oh no. I'm so sorry to read your update. I really hoped that the worst of the pain would be over now that she's had the op.

Wallywobbles · 11/12/2018 14:21

@olympicsrock thank you for that information. That's a real comfort. Honestly the prepoo pain was worse than anything. She kept saying I want to die and screaming. She seems more comfortable this afternoon. And with the drain and catheter out at least she's a little less terrified of moving. The wound sites are very clean.

She also had a proper clean too. I'm having my first night away but will be back tomorrow morning.

you can do this.
relax into the chrismtas.not a bette ror more joyous tie to heal alongside.good music.good food.good comfort from family and friends I think you deserve it all this year!

Toddlerteaplease · 11/12/2018 17:32

Paediatric nurse here. It sounds like she has an ileus. Where the bowel goes on strike. We would usually have a child on a Morhibe/ Febtanyl pump and all drugs given IV. I hope she's getting IV paracetamol, but if not please ask for it. She will get better. It's just can take a while.

nocoolnamesleft · 11/12/2018 18:16

Her guts have taken a hammering. Her appendix got inflamed, then burst, and leaked infected gunk all over her abdomen. That will have irritated/inflamed more of her gut. Then the gut had to be handled by the surgeons when they were taking out the appendix and washing the gunk out. Effectively, her guts are feeling bruised, battered, and attacked. Healthy guts naturally get waves of pushing movement going through them. Guts that have gone on strike may not be doing that, or not doing it properly. Which makes it hard to pass wind, and even harder to poo. Straining to do a poo not only means putting a little strain on the wound, but by altering the pressure in the abdomen can make the poor battered guts feel worse. To make matters worse, she obviously needs to be on decent painkillers, but some of them are constipating. So when her guts feel a bit better, she may still need gentle poo softeners (macrogol laxatives) to help get things moving properly.

She will get there. Kids heal amazingly well. But it's not easy getting there. And have to agree with the pp that IV paracetamol, in this situation, can be a lot better than oral!

After my DD had 25 cm of small intestine removed post intussusception, she couldn't fart or poo for a few days. In fact her first farts about 72 hours post op were cause for celebration and I think we got (complete water) poo about 24 hours later. Luckily they had warned me that her bowels would be on strike for a few days. Once her NG tube came out she was more comfortable and she improved so much 5-7 days post op. She was at risk for "a collection" which I think is some sort of collection of pus etc but luckily she was fine. Hope your DD is too.

StandardPoodle · 11/12/2018 19:39

DS had a perforated appendix when he was almost 13.
The first 2 days post-op were not fun and his stomach and bowels had gone on strike (we were told that the bowel does not like being handled and would take a while to get back into action).
However, on the third day he improved rapidly, was able to cope with a little toast and was allowed home.
Fingers crossed for a similarly swift improvement for your DD, OP.
(DS is a healthy, hulking man in his 20s now).

Haggisfish · 11/12/2018 20:01

Poor guts. Poor dd and poor you. I hope recovery will be swift and not too far away.

Wallywobbles · 11/12/2018 23:15

This has been such an informative and helpful thread. It helped me ask the right questions, signpost the necessary information and helped me get the help we have needed.

Thank you all.

Just to say that DD came out of hospital this evening. Still bloody knackered but such a massive improvement in the last 2 days.

Good news. Xmas Smile

mummymayhem18 · 14/12/2018 21:48

Great news. At least she's home and you can all look forward to Christmas 🎄🎅🏻 x

gettofuckthrees · 14/12/2018 22:34

Was reading the thread hoping for a positive outcome. How scary for you all. Well done to you for using your instinct and seeking help. In your case that was to ask for others experience and advice and act on that along with your own concerns.
I had my appendix out earlier this year and was back on my feet two weeks later working two jobs (taking my time but improved quickly), I hope your dd has a similarly positive recovery.

All the best Thanks
