to think this is one of the worst roundabouts ever??

My friend, who has recently passed her driving test, sent me this photo asking me how she should have navigated this roundabout.

I replied with what I thought but now after looking again I've got myself all confused.
I'd like to think I'd know the correct route if driving it in person, but it does seem confusing.

She is the blue line and she needs to get to the red exit.

Any thoughts?

It looks worse than it is as of the five lanes only three are going on to the roundabout so progress in the outside lane and then move over after first exit?

jimmyhill · 06/12/2018 12:32

Lane 5 as you enter the roundabout (where your blue mark is) but lane 2 as you exit.

It's a spiral roundabout so will funnel you into the correct lane to exit, there's no lane change to be accomplished.

EmUntitled · 06/12/2018 12:34

I think the roundabout is fine. We have a few similar ones near here. Two lanes left. Middle lane for straight on. Next lane for straight on or right. Last lane for right.

You have to change lanes at some point between entering and leaving the roundabout but thats not unusual.

I can see why it might be confusing for a learner though.

domton · 06/12/2018 12:35

I'd go in the inside lane, obviously, then into the middle lane after the second exit because the cars to my left would have gone straight on from the lane markings, then take the exit in the right hand lane, again, according to the (faint) markings, I think?

The roundabout by me they keep changing, but change the road markings 1st, and the signs weeks and weeks later. Chaos.

ThePants999 · 06/12/2018 12:39

As you enter the roundabout, and going round the left-hand side of it (where the blue car is), you're in the right-hand lane. After you cross the line in front of that blue car, you spiral out one lane, so that as you're going round the bit at the top of the picture, you're in the middle of the three lanes. That's then the correct lane to exit onto the right-hand of the two lanes on the red exit.

DaedricLordSlayer · 06/12/2018 12:42

inside lane to go on, moving across to outside lane after 2nd exit, there is a filter lane coming on as she head on to exit road, so there will be cars entering the road along side her on her left side as she exits, But it looks like dual carriage way so will be fine.

DaedricLordSlayer · 06/12/2018 12:44

sorry just looked again it's not a filter lane. So even easier.

Google - Magic roundabout Swindon Thats a roundabout !

AdamNichol · 06/12/2018 12:47

Or Saddler's farm roundabout

DailyMailShitheadNewspaper · 06/12/2018 12:52

It’s not actually the best example because it looks as if you need to cross the white lines at about 11 o’clock. Hmm. Wish I could see it without the google yellow lines on.

whatsthecomingoverthehill · 06/12/2018 12:55

I think it's harder than it looks actually. You start in the right hand lane (with the arrow pointing right), and then stay in the right hand lane (where there are two lanes going straight on and one right). But after that you need to go from the right hand lane to either the middle or the left hand lane, and there aren't road markings to direct you to do that. You could easily see that people would end up in the right hand lane still and then miss the turning off (or cut people up in trying to make the turn...)

Houseonahill · 06/12/2018 12:56

This is the worst roundabout in the world.

Anyone mentioned the Magic Roundabout in Swindon yet? Terrifying. Especially if you're not local and come across it by chance.

There's a Magic Roundabout in Hemel Hempstead too. A series of mini ones around one big one. It's fine as long as you treat each small one as a proper roundabout and ignore the big one completely.

People freak out if they suddenly see they're going the 'wrong' way round the big roundabout and then accidents happen - their brains can't compute.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 06/12/2018 13:10

This roundabout is awful. You think it's one but there are six mini roundabouts on the big roundabout. You just have to hold your breath an go for it! Grin Magic Roundabout

BonfiresOfInsanity · 06/12/2018 13:10

Haha just seen the posts above. Grin

CottonSock · 06/12/2018 13:12

DaedricLordSlayer · 06/12/2018 13:18

there is one i drive on sometimes simiar to the magic roundabout, but not as big and slightly spread out. I quite often take the long route round the smallers to get to where I want to avoid the feeling of going the wrong way Blush Grin

Oh, I thought this might be a discussion about the notorious witches hat roundaboutBlush

Flynnshine · 06/12/2018 13:20

This one near me can cause so many problems... it's quite simple really but the amount of people who can't get into the correct lane is frightening, I wonder how often there are accidents!

Sadlers is just like magic roundabout

Ah, but it isn't, because there is a middle to Sadlers, and you can only go round it clockwise. The Magic Roundabout in Swindon allows traffic to flow round it in either direction - clockwise or anti-clockwise.

PlatypusPie · 06/12/2018 13:23

The Hatton Cross entrance to Heathrow has a small and not particularly complicated roundabout with a mini roundabout to one side which would probably be ok if it didn’t have lots of people with less exposure to roundabout quirks heading for the hire car return.
