to think this is one of the worst roundabouts ever??

My friend, who has recently passed her driving test, sent me this photo asking me how she should have navigated this roundabout.

I replied with what I thought but now after looking again I've got myself all confused.
I'd like to think I'd know the correct route if driving it in person, but it does seem confusing.

She is the blue line and she needs to get to the red exit.

Any thoughts?

The Magic Roundabout in Swindon is really fine when you get used to it.

Flynnshine · 06/12/2018 13:26

@PlatypusPie - I know exactly which one you mean!

Boomah · 06/12/2018 13:28

I live 10 minutes away from the magic roundabout, go across it frequently. Still scares the bejeesus out of me!

PlatypusPie · 06/12/2018 13:30

Flynnshine I broke down on the Scilly Isles roundabout once, just at the Esher exit. I was very, very pregnant and a white van driver was very cross with me until he realised and was then so kind and helpful. Not a great memory 😦

Caroian · 06/12/2018 13:33

My husband and I had one of very few arguments we've ever had on the Hangar Lane Gyratory Flynnshine. He was driving and my directions were impeccable (i.e it was definitely his fault!!). We missed our exit more than once and did three circuits in total!

The roundabout in the OP is a fairly standard spiral roundabout. It's actually quite well designed as the lanes do peel correctly, unlike some around here which are concentric and hence require actual lane changes. The key is to constantly check your blind spots for people who seem unable to get in the correct lane and follow it.

Monkeybunkey · 06/12/2018 13:35

I use the one in Colchester every day and go round the "wrong" way as it's a set of mini roundabouts. I've had so many near misses from people who don't give way to their right as they're confused by it (or just terrible drivers!).

AdamNichol · 06/12/2018 13:59

You can go around Sadler's either way.

With the Olympic velodrome being in Southend (or out that way); they built a whole flyover and underpass thing to cut out Sadlers from the rad in from London

HexagonalBattenburg · 06/12/2018 14:08

We have a couple here that have one lane of traffic going through the centre of the roundabout. Fine - except it's really inconsistent which lane of traffic is going through the middle.... one has right turners, one straight ahead traffic and it's just a pain in the arse if you're not local.

AnotherPidgey · 06/12/2018 14:21

There's some unpleasant ones near me, purely because of poor road markings (and peoples' inability to zipper merge). Several where the entry marks to use either lane for the destination, but you regularly find yourself being cut up from behind and thrust into oncoming traffic after a couple of car lengths of merging space because you dared to have the audacity to use lane 2 which was marked.

The best one which surely can only have been laid out by someone who has never laid eyes on the highway code requires drivers to use lane 1 for all 5 turn offs leaving lane 2 only suitable for a U-turn Confused Naturally no body actually does this, and just spirals out as necessary. A bit awkward when someone does randomly go round the whole lot in lane 1.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 06/12/2018 14:31

Flynnshine I went round the Gyratory on my third driving lesson back in 1980s, it was even more of nightmare then than it is now! Grin

howrudeforme · 06/12/2018 14:41

@Flynshine

Hanger Lane Gyratory is the worst thing ever. I would panic days in advance if I thought I needed to use it. Makes me shudder still.

LifesABeachCoaster · 06/12/2018 14:45

Dear lord, these roundabouts are giving me sweaty palms. I thought the one by me was bad! I hate roundabouts but I am getting better.

Oliversmumsarmy · 06/12/2018 14:48

Hangar Lane gyratory is easy.

There is a roundabout I went round once.

It was like a mini roundabout in the middle and 2 lanes from every point approaching it.
But only one lane at each point exiting.

Absolute nightmare

howrudeforme · 06/12/2018 14:53

How is hangar lane easy - it’s bloody awful and the traffic too. That’s why I never went west London and did a big detour for Heathrow.

I’m usually fine with roundabouts. Ex dh from country where if you in the roundabout you give way to those joining it. Now that was tricky for me.

Fatted · 06/12/2018 14:58

@Houseonahill

I was actually going to reply on here with Sainsburys roundabout as well!!

It's not even a bloody roundabout anymore really, just lots of lights in a clockwise motion.

BonfiresOfInsanity · 06/12/2018 15:28

To be fair to Oliversmumsarmy, the Hangar Lane gyratory is 'easy' if you are used to it. It doesn't give me sweats now like it did when I first learnt to drive, you just need eyes in the back of your head for all the loons trying to cut into your lane to save themselves 30 seconds.

Flynnshine · 06/12/2018 15:30

I wouldn't call Hangar Lane easy!

Yes, in theory it makes sense but not to 95% of the people using it... there's 6 or 7 lanes at one point and not one person is ever in the lane they need to be in... I HATE IT despite regularly using it. It helps that the traffic is always shockingly busy so no one is flying around it at 100 mph!

TheOxymoron · 06/12/2018 15:31

Magic roundabout in Hemel is fun.

to think this is one of the worst roundabouts ever??
HexagonalBattenburg · 06/12/2018 16:51

There's also some great ones in Sunderland where they've redone the lane markings to basically be dots and you cannot, if you're a child of a certain era, resist driving around it making Pacman noises as it looks exactly like the little white dots he used to eat.

Oliversmumsarmy · 07/12/2018 12:45

I think Hangar Lane is great because once I am on it (I have usually sat in a queue of traffic just to get on the roundabout) I know that at that point I can actually move for about 1/2 mile before I hit another jam.

RollerJed · 07/12/2018 12:49

The roundabouts in the UK are horrendous. I had my licence 15 years when I first drove here and I do not understand.

Pp said tg9ey funnel out, but what about new entries while you're going around?

Hate them. Install fucking traffic lights you tight wads Angry

DMCWelshCakes · 07/12/2018 12:58

The only way to do the Hangar Lane Gyratory is to make sure that you have other drivers in your car as point people & give them a corner each to monitor. 360 vision is the solution!

It's the fact that it's not level makes if harder as you can't see what's coming up ahead of you.

Jiggeriepokerie · 07/12/2018 13:07

Hate them. Install fucking traffic lights you tight wads

No chance. The traffic flows MUCH better with a good roundabout! Who wants to sit at a ref light when there's nothing coming through from the other side?!

PollyEthel · 07/12/2018 13:16

Never seen or driven a magic roundabout. It looks really simple if you ignore the big roundabout, but I can see how it could be incredibly intimidating - very glad I have seen one on here prior to seeing one in real life!
