t-bar shoes when lashing down

Why are girls put in T-bar shoes in the pouring down rain?
Looking around today, every single girl bar one going into school was wearing T-bars.
every single boy was of course wearing proper shoes without great big holes on the top of them,
every single mother was wearing boots or full shoes.
Why do they think it's OK for girls to get wet / cold feet?

In the rain my DD goes to school in black boots, and keeps them on there. I DGAF if the school doesn't like it though to be fair they haven't said anything.

Ohyesiam · 05/12/2018 16:17

Clark’s do brogues in their school range which my dd has for primary, and now has for secondary.

Aquilla · 05/12/2018 16:20

I tried to convince ds4 she needed some 'proper shoes'. She looked at me incredulously.

Yura · 05/12/2018 16:22

My son wears primigi girls shoes (super narrow foot). they are black, velco and closed in top.
why people send their daughters to school in winter in summer shoes is beyond me.

Yura · 05/12/2018 16:23

add on: they are usually around £40, so the same as the useless clarks slippers girls often wear

Avegemitesandwich · 05/12/2018 16:25

God I have to say this has never really crossed my mind! If it's absolutely pissing down we drive to school the kids wear wellies, but otherwise DD has never complained of wet feet or anything. Her T-bar shoes are very thick soled and sturdy though, I got them from Sainsburys.

vandrew4 · 05/12/2018 16:34

snowflake it will be tricky todo an oline link to you for shoes that are not sold online as err, they're not sold online?

These are the ones my friend bought. Clarks is in lots of high streets.

Like others have said Clark’s do hardly any girls styles that have their feet fully enclosed. We managed to get Dd a pair of non t-bar ones for winter. I agree though that it’s ridiculous that they are hard to buy for girls for winter.

Paddingtonthebear · 05/12/2018 16:38

I’ve just bought 6 year old DD some plain black leather ankle boots for school, job done!

Yura · 05/12/2018 16:39

not ours (ours are around £40 and not patent), but substantially below £60, and closed

I agree with you OP.

My DD has always had boots or fully covered shoes for school for exactly this reason, but it’s not always easy to find them. I have on occasion had to buy them from the boys section, she’s pretty gender non-conforming with 2 brothers, so she didn’t mind too much when she was younger but started to get a bit self conscious about it when she got older. She now has brogues, while her friends wear slip on ballet style shoes (they kill my feet so I don’t know how they wear them to walk around all day!) or the strappy ones.

It does annoy me.

TrickyKid · 05/12/2018 16:46

That's why my dd chooses to get school shoes from the boys section.

Yura · 05/12/2018 17:07

@randomsabreuse both primigi and superfit have narrow sizes. my son is a 10 c, so i’ve tried a few.

tasharichford · 05/12/2018 18:07

I got my daughter a lovely pair of winter type knee high boots for school, keeps the rain out and keeps her legs warm too which is needed here in Scotland. Our school also had them change into their indoor shoes whilst indoors

MrsKoala · 05/12/2018 19:30

To those saying your dd wears wellies to school and then changes if it rains - do they change into wellies for break and lunch play? Or do they not play outside in the rain? Genuine question - My boys don't change at break times and go out in all weathers. I'm thinking about when dd starts school and comparing the girls uniform to what my boys do and I just think she'll be uncomfortable and soaking. But she may not play like the boys so I don't know.

I currently don't put her in tights and dresses so I don't know if she'll take to them. At the moment she's in the refusing all trousers/leg coverings and coats stage, so will go out in bare legs, boots, a long sleeved t-shirt and a woolly hat Confused

EwItsAHooman · 05/12/2018 19:31

Usually if it's raining it'll be indoor play.

IdentifyasTired · 05/12/2018 19:46

I'm slightly confused. At our school if it's pouring down, they will be in at playtime.

We also drive to school (7 mile trip each way) so no getting wet on the school run.

It didn't occur to me that I was bring judged on the style of shoe my girls wear. And I have always gone to Start-rite for their school shoes. Confused

drspouse · 05/12/2018 19:50

Ours go out in all weathers too.

IdentifyasTired · 05/12/2018 19:58

And if it's snowing they go in snow boots/wellies and change into their plimsoles once they're inside.

MondayImInLove · 05/12/2018 20:05

I am sending DD to school in leather waterproofed boots for the last month or so. The school hasen’t said anything.
I don’t understand why you would put shoes on your DC that are not keeping her feet warm and dry.

Avegemitesandwich · 05/12/2018 20:47

Those who send their kids in in big winter leather boots, do they change into Plimsolls at school? I would imagine a child is quite uncomfy wearing boots designed for outdoors in at school all day.

My school don't allow boots like that anyway. And I think most schools have 'wet play' when it's pissing down rain outside anyway don't they?

drspouse · 05/12/2018 21:46

Reception has an indoor-outdoor classroom and the other classes have a good deal of outdoor provision, including in winter.
