I have just read forty pages of thread and it’s almost full! Let us congregate here for answers!

Dairyqueen2 I still think an alternate valid answer to your riddle would be 23. I see where 4 comes from, but I also think it could be

How many letters are there in the answer to this question

And if you count the italics you get 23 (if I’ve counted correctly)

A bit like the old school riddle: “Constantinople is a very long word, if you can’t spell it you’re a dunce”

Dairyqueen2 · 06/12/2018 23:44

... Well yeah .... i guess it fits as an answer ... but the 'proper' answer of 'four' makes you marvel at it's neatness and cleverness!! The answer '23' just makes you groan a bit! But, logically, both work, sure.

Thegirlinthefireplace · 06/12/2018 23:46

Ooh smiling, I like your alternative version. I think you should still get the marks for that answer, in the manner of a maths exam where you still get marks for correct workings out even if you end up with the wrong answer.

tenredthings · 06/12/2018 23:52

Den1se has sussed it out !

Boswell. They called him Bos .Four (letters) short.End of story. Nothing else is relevant.

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 23:53

@NoTeaForMe she has unfortunately taken the "answer" she worked out and left us hanging.

Quite a few theories floating around.

I have my one and would love to know if is correct

coolwalking · 06/12/2018 23:54

@tenredthings that's already been discounted by the OP

SylviaAndSydney · 06/12/2018 23:59

Boswell. They called him Bos .Four (letters) short.End of story. Nothing else is relevant.

That was suggested days ago, literally.

PurpleRobe · 07/12/2018 00:01

"I know him as Well"

Does kind of work, but if this is the joke then it is sloppy because .. you know him "aswell" as who? ...
The person reading the riddle does not say "I know a man called Boswell" the riddle is "there once was a man called boswell"

So who do you know him "as well" as?! Bit sloppy. And also whonom wart is quick witted enough to instantly reply "I know him as well" without being prompted

coolwalking · 07/12/2018 00:01

I know him as Well ( Well being the other part of his name!)

It's a joke on the word Well

coolwalking · 07/12/2018 00:03

Sorry posted too soon

One of the clues is that it works better in person

I agree it's not perfect but is the best solution I have with the clues that have been given

Dairyqueen2 · 07/12/2018 00:18

Cool - read what purplerobe has said. It's illogical because it doesn't fit logically with the rest of the riddle. Nobody has said 'I know a man called Bos', so you can't say 'I know him as well'. We get the ref to (Bos)Well, btw ...

Penguin34 · 07/12/2018 00:25

I've seen the answer written a few times in this thread and people seem fine ignoring it?

My dad used to tell a riddle that was almost the same, just wasn't called bos.

He did have to explain it to me a few times but I was young

coolwalking · 07/12/2018 00:27

@Dairyqueen2 I understand her response better now sorry.

Most riddles have an air of "there once..." the teller of the riddle isn't saying that they know him so the response of I know him as well does work.

I have thought about this too much Grinit's really boring now.

Looking forward to the thread ending unless we have a cameo appearance from the OP. I
