To ask if this is short for a man?

5"9? I can understand if you're 5"2 yourself, you won't think it's short, but what does the MNers over 5"7 think? I'm 5"7 myself.

OP posts:
Oblomov18 · 02/12/2018 18:50

No it's not short. By UK standards.

Mummadeeze · 02/12/2018 18:51

I don’t think it is short. I am 5’7’’ and have only ever really fancied guys who are 5’8” or 5’9”. I don’t go for tall guys. I would say under 5’5” is short for a man but it is all relative!

ChristmasArmadillo · 02/12/2018 18:52

I’m 5’9 (female) so although I think it’s average height technically, to me a man 5’9 seems short. DH is 6’2 and that seems “average” to me. He’s rarely the tallest and never the shortest.

jerrysbellyhangslikejelly · 02/12/2018 18:55

Why does it matter? I'm 5'6 and my partner is 5'4 so he's shorter than average but I honestly don't notice it. I wear heels when we're out and couldn't give a toss about it. I love him for the person he is not how close he is to the sky.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 02/12/2018 18:59

XH is 5'10 and I'm 6'0 so I never wore heels.
DP is 6'7 so I can wear heels now if I want to but I don't often as the novelty soon wore off 😂

oblada · 02/12/2018 19:02

It's not just height but also perception. My DH is about an inch taller than me (i am 5'7 and he is 5'8 or 5'9 approx) and i always knew he was taller than me even by a little bit. for some reason tho he was convinced for a long time that i was taller than him (an easy to check fact!). also my ex boyfriend was probably 5'9 but for a while i thought he was shorter than me. The way he behaved, lacked confidence etc made him appear shorter. DH is quite broad shouldered and i think it works for him to be under 6' as taller could be intimidating to some with his built.

oblada · 02/12/2018 19:05

Also it is handy to be a similar height. I can drive his car without faffing about with the seat (tho i will adjust for long journeys) and everything is at our common height. When my brother, over 6', comes over he has to stoop a bit under things at home. When my MIL (much shorter than me) comes to stay she has to use a stool to reach things she needs in the kitchen etc.

NotFeelingRight · 02/12/2018 19:05

My ds is gearing up to be about 5 foot 7 or 8. Let's hope someone will want him in the future! Good job he's gorgeous isn't it?

IHaveAPen · 02/12/2018 19:06

Tom Hardy is 5'9 so it'll do for me (5'5)

fiadhflower · 02/12/2018 19:07

My husband and I are pretty much the same height - around 5’10. Before I met him, I had much taller boyfriends and I couldn’t imagine being with someone under 6’2. Then he came along and was so lovely and much fun, and all of a sudden I didn’t care what height he was. I also discovered the benefits other people have mentioned such as how easy it is to kiss someone who is the same height as you. Also spooning in bed is much better than with taller boyfriends. I wear a low heel most days, and still wear higher heels to weddings and the likes.

NotFeelingRight · 02/12/2018 19:07

Also Zac Efron is 5 foot 8 and I would!

Mileymoocow · 02/12/2018 19:09

Me and my DP both 5'9". Have 2 DC so obviously doesn't put me off at all.

thegreylady · 02/12/2018 19:12

My dsil is 5’8” and the the best husband and father and son in law anyone could hope for. Dd is 5’5”.
Who the hell cares about height?

Larasshadow · 02/12/2018 19:13

@Millymoocow I was litrerly just going to put the same thing lol

Also add that DH doesn't have a problem when I wear heals.

A580Hojas · 02/12/2018 19:16

I can't believe 5'9" is average male height in the UK? That seems very short.

Cherries101 · 02/12/2018 19:19

By UK standards it’s average. I’m 5 7 ish and my husband’s not quite 5 9. I like the almost insignificant height difference but then he’s probably the tallest guy I’ve ever had a relationship with. Before him I preferred men shorter than me.

XiCi · 02/12/2018 19:23

Yes I would consider 5ft 9 short for a man, especially this generation. All 3 of my nephew's for example are 6ft 5 and thats not unusual within their peer group. DH, DB, DF, Dfil, Dbil and all my male cousins are 6ft 3 and over so I guess that would affect my opinion somewhat.

NaiceShoes · 02/12/2018 19:23

I can believe it. I'm 5'10 and most men I come into contact with are my height or shorter.

Rachelle3211 · 02/12/2018 19:25

I have dated shorter men and taller men and height isn't a deal breaker for me. That said I prefer tall men. Dh is 6 feet, I'm 5'4 and I like our height difference. 5'9 seems on the shorter side to me. Not short mind you.

catmummy1 · 02/12/2018 19:26

I'm nearly 5ft 11 so would be short compared to me but I'm tall for a woman. My partner is 6ft 2. I don't wear heels either but that's my choice, my partner doesn't care if I do.

Coyoacan · 02/12/2018 19:33

Don't call me racist, but it depends on their heritage. 5/9 would be stunted in the Netherlands, but not in Mexico

Yeap, OP, you'd hate Mexico, but a lot of the men are dead gorgeous.

Cherries101 · 02/12/2018 19:37

@Coyoacan - SE Asia too. Gorgeous pocket rockets Grin

user1511042793 · 02/12/2018 19:41

Well done this first poster has said they wouldn’t go out with anyone shorter than them. Why do we say this????? It wasn’t even the question and yes I agree with previous posters why does it matter.

Cherries101 · 02/12/2018 19:43

@user1511042793 - double standards probably. I’m sure if a man refused to even consider the possibility of dating them because they were too short / poor etc there would be hell to pay.

MissConductUS · 02/12/2018 19:51

It's worth noting that women are predisposed to find tall men relatively more attractive than short men, all other things being equal. It's an aspect of evolutionary psychology.

A curvilinear effect of height on reproductive success in human males

It's not dissimilar to men's affinity for big boobs and a low waist to hip ratio.
