To ask if this is short for a man?

5"9? I can understand if you're 5"2 yourself, you won't think it's short, but what does the MNers over 5"7 think? I'm 5"7 myself.

It really is subjective.

I am 5 ft 4, and DH is 5 ft 10, so there's a good distance between our heights. My friend at work is 5 ft 9, and says she could never be with a man under 6 foot 2. She said she would rather he was average looking and tall, than handsome and 5 foot 6.

Tom Cruise is allegedly short, but I think he is 5 ft 6 (or 7) which isn't THAT small. Noel Edmonds is shortish at 5 ft 3, but I don't think it's a big deal. It has been proven though, that more successful men are taller.

Not to say that shorter men are losers with shit lives LOL, just that men seem to advance more in business and so on, if they are a bit taller. Then again, people are also more likely to advance in life if they are physically attractive... (Also if they are white, and male, but that's a whole other discussion!!!)

ToastyFingers · 02/12/2018 17:05

I think it depends on age too. My dad is 5'10 and seem about the same size as his mates. DH is 6 foot and was a little taller than his peers, he's mid thirties. Teens/early 20s guys all seem to be over 6 foot now as standard.

SerenDippitty · 02/12/2018 17:06

I’m 5ft 2 and DH is 5ft 6. We are happy.

Firesuit · 02/12/2018 17:07

According to this calculator I've just found, 5 foot 9 is average for the UK. There are an equal number of men shorter and taller than this.

RedSkyLastNight · 02/12/2018 17:07

I'm 5 foot 8.

As others have said 5 foot 9 is average height so not short.
For the record my DH is 5 foot 6, but then I'm not so shallow as to pick a man based on how tall he is ...

WinterfellWench · 02/12/2018 17:08

Fun fact; Queen Victoria was reported to be 4 ft 11 inches tall." A tiny Queen Grin

I know she isn't man, but I was surprised to find this out the other day.

OutPinked · 02/12/2018 17:09

5 ft 9-10 is about average for men I think. Average for women is 5 ft 3 so going by averages that’s a ‘perfect’ balance.

I’m above average at 5 ft 7 and DP is about 5 ft 9. He’s the shortest boyfriend I’ve ever had, usually date 6ft+ but it really doesn’t bother me. I’m slightly taller than him in really big heels but barely ever wear them so it’s fine.

jelliebelly · 02/12/2018 17:10

Average

PGtipsonly · 02/12/2018 17:10

Split from ex last year who was 5"9, I met him OLD and at first the height didn't bother me because I liked him, but as time went on I wasn't allowed to wear heels when going out together because it would make me taller than him, and he didn't like that. He's now with someone who's 5"2 which he's very happy about lol, all the men are "short" in hes family, he's the tallest at 5"9. My brother is 6"4, my dad 6"2, my sister is 5"11, so I come from a tall family. I've always been more attracted to tall men, but because I fell for ex at the time I let it slide, but now I wouldn't date someone under 6"0 tbh, I would like to wear heels comfortably.
Why is it shallow if that's what I prefer and attracted to?

Why are you only asking the opinions of tall women?

Because as I've explained in my OP, if you're 5"0-5"2, a man who's 5"9 is tall for you. But with someone who's 5"7, it feels as if they're the same height, at least that's how I felt with my ex.

DH's best friend is 5'3". He is the nicest, most wonderful man I know (apart from 5'7" DH). DH's other next to best friend is 6'4" tall. Also wonderful, wonderful man.

So. As PP why does it matter?

Are they a decent person.

If relevant to the relationship - do you find them attractive.

Height - meh.

mumlost1940 · 02/12/2018 17:11

I put my love on a pedestal: so much easier when the ceiling needs a coat of emulsion.

Yes, there is discrimination against short men in the workplace, it affects women too

AriadnePersephoneCloud · 02/12/2018 17:12

Completely agree kissing someone a nearer height to you is easier. I had a boyfriend once who was a foot taller than me, it was no where near as convenient as my now DH who is maybe 5ft 8...or slightly less 😁

katseyes7 · 02/12/2018 17:14

My lovely dad was 5'1". He was one of twins, born in the Depression, and the last of 13 children. l think my poor grandma must have been totally worn out and undernourished by then, bless her.
What he lacked in stature, he made up for in love and kindness. l think these days 5'6" would be considered on the short side for a man, though.

NaiceShoes · 02/12/2018 17:15

It's obviously not short.
And I say this as a 5'10 woman.
But it will be for this generation of teens.

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 02/12/2018 17:18

Random fact - apparently Admiral Nelson was shorter than Napoleon. My mind blew on that one

Yeo and neopleon wasn't partically short it was british proaganda

Snowdrifthill · 02/12/2018 17:18

It's all relevant though, Me at 5'8" and DH at 6 feet, both felt short in Amsterdam last year!

Everincreasingfrequency · 02/12/2018 17:19

"Teens/early 20s guys all seem to be over 6 foot now as standard."

Doesn't apply where I am (greater london/south east). Any random tube journey you see teens/young men of many heights! It may depend on the demography of the area - as other pp have commented.

Glaciferous · 02/12/2018 17:19

I wasn't allowed to wear heels when going out together because it would make me taller than him, and he didn't like that

This is the problem, not his height! He obviously suffered from feeling inadequate about his height.

mumsastudent · 02/12/2018 17:19

so what! better that the dh is a good guy who loves you & who you love anything else is not important.

RedSkyLastNight · 02/12/2018 17:21

but now I wouldn't date someone under 6"0 tbh, I would like to wear heels comfortably.

So the issue is that your ex was controlling ... nothing to do with his height!
I suspect a non-controlling shorter man will work out better for you than a controlling taller man.

puzzledlady · 02/12/2018 17:24

Why does it matter?!?!?!?

MissConductUS · 02/12/2018 17:24

5'10" is the average male adult height in the US and I expect it's similar in the UK. So I don't think 5'9" is short.

I'm 5'3", DH is 6' and 18 year old DS is 6'1". I'm glad he takes after his dad. Smile

It's not just genetics, it's also optimal nutrition growing up, particularly calcium intake.

Bunnymumma · 02/12/2018 17:27

I'm 5'10 and my DH is 6ft. He doesn't give a hoot if I wear heels and am taller than humans neither do I, thanks to his reaction.

Does it matter? Don't you fall in love with an entire person, not just where their armpit is in relation to your face?

Bunnymumma · 02/12/2018 17:30

*taller than him!
