Aibu to hate the girls can't be gamers stereotype

So I personally am a gamer. I'm not talking candy crush on my phone I'm talking uncharted, tomb raider and assassins creed on my PS4. But I've gotten a lot of hate on this at work saying girls shouldn't be playing games and what example am i setting to my daughter. The scary thing is this is women saying this.
Now I personally feel I'm setting a pretty decent example to my Daughter by showing her that men aren't the only ones who can play video games and that women can be just as good at them or better (because I always dominate at battlefield I'm not kidding)
so Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with women gaming and that women should feel free to do it if they want to/can

It's good to see this thread - the Gaming forum is basically dead, please do consider banging on in there so we can carry on talking about the hobby!

I've just blown our entire Xmas-presents-for-the-adults budget on a new 4k HDR telly and an XboneX and a PSVR in the Black Friday sales. We're both loving it, though the Xbox still has the worst UI in the entire universe. It plays Forza Horizon 4 beautifully on the fancy telly.

And I'll finally be getting into Red Dead 2 soon too.

The PSVR (into the existing PS4) has also been a joy - Astrobot is ridiculously good, and Rez Infinite and Tetris Effect are just lovely.

SpoonBlender · 03/12/2018 23:38

(probably our budget for the next three years including birthdays, to be honest. Oh well!)

JustABetterPlayer · 04/12/2018 00:08

From an avid Counter Strike player since beta1 (M4’s with a scope, happy days) it’s not that women can’t be gamers, it’s just that they tend not to be very good. Though in fairness that comment applies to the majority of gamers.

goodnightspaceman · 04/12/2018 00:21

I'm a little late to the party but I didn't even think this would ever be an issue? So odd that people would hate on you for it??? I watched my Dad playing Tomb Raider as a kid (hiding under the covers right enough) and I'm sure that's what led to me studying computer games and animation at uni! Video games are great fun and should never be restricted to boys...ugh! Why should they get all the fun??? Wink

SegmentationFault · 04/12/2018 04:40

@auberbene But surely gamer is just a quick way of saying 'people who like to play games'. Hmm

auberbene · 04/12/2018 06:18

@SegmentationFault is 'chef' the best way of describing someone who likes to cook?

It's just one of those irrational things that make me cringe haha Grin

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 04/12/2018 07:47

One thing I do love is gaming with my kids. I get the Lego games. My 4 year old is great. We completed Jurassic Park 100% and his observation and memory for the game mechanics is great. We're doing Star Wars now.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 04/12/2018 08:16

it’s not that women can’t be gamers, it’s just that they tend not to be very good

And that's the kind of shitty attitude that needs to fuck right off.

Women are just as good at gaming. They don't operate the controller with their vagina.

ghostsandghoulies · 04/12/2018 12:31

Are you judging this by female entrants in competitions?
Ds1 is 12 and was discussing with me how the top YouTubers/streamers are rarely the best at the games that they are associated with. I don't watch gaming videos online but it's hard to find good females to watch as there's too much tits and ass.

bruffin · 04/12/2018 13:14

Im 56 and love my PS4. Replaying Spyro at the moment, play tomb raider , Uncharted, all the lego games. DD 21 is into Overwatch. DS has built a gaming Pc and DH is the only one in our family who really isnt interested.

FishCanFly · 04/12/2018 13:35

You don't get kids with reading or knitting addictions do you? Well not generally to the detriment of those around them at least. As a hobby it's not quite the same is it?
Before games and tv, kids reading too much was a thing that adults moaned about - that it was a lazy and useless waste of time.

Chocolatecoffeeaddict · 04/12/2018 13:46

I don't get it, it's only playing games. Why do girls need a role model for that? The majority of gamers are probably male but no one said girls can't play games.

JacquesHammer · 04/12/2018 13:48

but no one said girls can't play games

A good many people have said just that.

FishCanFly · 04/12/2018 13:53

I wonder if female gamers fall into a different pattern? For example, I am a keen gamer, but totally non-competitive and only play single-player stuff. I view games like films or books - I follow the story, then move on to a next one. So i'd be totally off radar in gaming community.

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 04/12/2018 13:58

FishCanFly But I'm a male gamer who prefers non competitive single player games, and I know several very competitive multiplayer game playing female gamers. Everyone is different.

Meangirls36 · 04/12/2018 13:59

Men don't like the competition!

From Oxford dictionary:

chef
NOUN
A professional cook, typically the chief cook in a restaurant or hotel.

gamer
NOUN
A person who plays video games or participates in role-playing games.

Not really the same thing.

Of course they aren't the same thing; one is an occupation that involves the preparation of food, the other is a hobby that doesn't. It's like saying a knitter and a high court judge aren't the same thing.

SegmentationFault · 05/12/2018 13:05

I was responding to a PP who claimed that gamer should only refer to those who play games professionally in the same way that chef only refers to those who cook professionally.

Willow2017 · 05/12/2018 13:29

Thanks folks.
Thanks to this thread giving me food for thought like telling me I am a shit mum because of games and I shouldnt do it as I am female etc I spent a hilarious hour last night playing Left 4 Dead with ds2. Its been ages since I had so much fun, I had forgotten what a laugh we have. An 'oldie' but goodie Grin
Guess what I am planning on doing a whole lot more of? where the hell is the L4D2 disc??

BumDisease · 05/12/2018 14:26

I'll be spending my weekend with Super Smash Bros Ultimate...

masterandmargarita · 05/12/2018 14:47

Fishcanfly- I wasn't around 'before tv' but I have read books set in the time 'before tv' and have never noticed the act of reading to be frowned upon. Little women, Jane eyre, Brontes, Jane Austen. Dickens etc. All books and authors big on reading.
