Aibu to hate the girls can't be gamers stereotype

coolmum223 · 01/12/2018 23:22

So I personally am a gamer. I'm not talking candy crush on my phone I'm talking uncharted, tomb raider and assassins creed on my PS4. But I've gotten a lot of hate on this at work saying girls shouldn't be playing games and what example am i setting to my daughter. The scary thing is this is women saying this.
Now I personally feel I'm setting a pretty decent example to my Daughter by showing her that men aren't the only ones who can play video games and that women can be just as good at them or better (because I always dominate at battlefield I'm not kidding)
so Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with women gaming and that women should feel free to do it if they want to/can

Hate to break it to you OP and I’m sure you’re aware of this as you claim to love gaming so much, but the future of serious gaming is on mobile devices. That’s because the future leaders and programmers in the gaming industry are coming from South Asia where videogames / consoles are inaccessible due to cost but mobiles are everywhere. I consider myself a gamer but I choose not to waste time and energy and money on consoles — that doesn’t make me any less credible than you.

Anniegetyourgun · 02/12/2018 15:58

My theory (trotted out when some ass remarks in general chat, in WoW or HotS usually, that girls don't play games) is that women/girls are usually better at games, because we use both hands on the keyboard.

Spudlet · 02/12/2018 16:15

Well I hope you lot are satisfied now. I thought I'd have a cheeky go while DS was napping and died. Now I have to do a corpse run 😑 After I've cooked pheasant breast in rosé for dinner, that is...

Ohmno · 02/12/2018 16:50

Yeah right the "future" of gaming is mobile devices that's why the new Diablo went down such a storm at Blizzcon Hmm

RedDeadRoach · 02/12/2018 16:59

That must be why games developers are spending millions on developing games for consoles then?

RedDeadRoach · 02/12/2018 17:04

Red dead 2 took $725 million in its first weekend. It doesn't look too me like consoles are on the way out.

Tiscold · 02/12/2018 17:06

The future of gaming isn't on mobiles.

Mobile gaming is certainly growung as its convenient and easy to pass the time etc but console and PC is where it's at and where the big budget are.

Consoles and PCs are providing what gamers want and no way will mobiles ever be able to match that

Celebelly · 02/12/2018 17:14

There's plenty of space for mobile games along with PC and console games. Some parts of the market overlap, some don't. Some platforms just appeal more to certain demographs than others and have different strengths and weaknesses. The portability of mobile games and stuff like the Switch is great for gaming on the move, but immersive games like RDR on a 4K TV are a completely different experience, as are games that require very different playstyles to what you can currently and feasibly for the near to medium future ever achieve on mobile, just due to screen and keyboard size, lack of precision, etc.

Look at the rise of e-sports for an insight into the future of gaming too, I think. It's becoming big (and lucrative) business and there are now stadiums specifically for e-sports. The Overwatch League has a team buy-in in the tens of millions of dollars.

I’m getting it purely for Zelda 😀

ETanny · 02/12/2018 17:21

Yanbu at all. Infact I think you're helping your daughter by showing her she can do whatever she wants.

I am also into video games and boardgames and this has also had a impact on my eldest DD who is 11, because of what I like she's been playing games on the PlayStation since she was 3ish which in turn means for her age she is a pretty good player.

However we've recently discovered the boys in her school don't like this very much and have deleted her from their friends lists because she's better than them at Fortnite. 🙄.

Celebelly · 02/12/2018 17:21

I've been playing a lot of Pokemon Let's Go lately as I'm winding down from WoW in preparation for the baby coming – I've been in a very good raiding guild for the last couple of years, which has been so much fun, but it's time to move on as I won't have the spare time for organised raiding, although I'll probably still pop in and out when I have a spare hour or so. I met my DP on WoW six years ago so I have really fond feelings for it!

He's currently immersed in RDR on his new 4K TV we got in the Black Friday sales. It looks SO GOOD. I'm definitely going to steal it when he's done! I really loved the first one.

We play a lot of console Diablo together too lately. We used to play on PC co-op but I don't find sitting at the computer comfy in my pregnant state so we've been playing it on PS4 instead as I can sit in my comfy chair or on the sofa.

Adversecamber22 · 02/12/2018 17:23

I have been gaming for forty years but yes this attitude does still exist. I play multiplayer competitive games. Played pong and had a Commodore 64 then an Amiga. Before that I went to a video arcade as I lived in a seaside resort.

I do play some serious grindy games I await The Division 2 and spent many an hour hunting rogues in the PvP area in the first one . I also play Fortnite. I was in a queue on holiday and chatted to a little girl of about 8 with her Mum who was wearing a Fortnite t.shirt. She had only ever won one match, I gave her some tips and also said your as good as any boy that games don’t ever let anyone say girls can’t be gamers. It was a great chat and I hope she won some more.

Unicornandbows · 02/12/2018 17:38

I play dota2 à lot the biggest insult I've ever had is being called a noob, i don't play console games but more computer games.

It's so much more fun then being bored

Willow2017 · 02/12/2018 17:46

I loved the baldurs gate series. Possibly one of the earliest games I remember where you could choose to play it as a female character and all the male and female options had the same attributes. Plenty of interesting female NPCs in that too.

Me too. In fact i have just dug it out a box (we have just.moved house and still unpacking) and fired it up on my pc for the first time in ages.😀

Racecardriver · 02/12/2018 17:47

Well it is a bad example to set to your daughter, your sex is quite irrelevant.

Willow2017 · 02/12/2018 17:50

I have tried mobile games and apart from.the repetitive nature i find the constant needing to buy stuff to keep playing or improve characters really annoying and gave up.

Much prefer pc or xbox games.

Willow2017 · 02/12/2018 17:52

Racecar
Why is a hobby a bad example to anyone?

Enjoying something thats not harming anyone else is bad?

Willow2017 · 02/12/2018 17:55

A lot of my experience with ‘gamers’ is clothing not getting washed, children being left to their own devices, dirty houses, decent meals not being made. I know that’s a generalisation but it seems to be a true with a good percentage of people I know who game dramatically.

In your experience. These are just shit parents/lazy people. If it wasnt gaming they would have some other excuse for being slobs.

Dont tar us all with the same brush. I dont know one gamer like your description.

JacquesHammer · 02/12/2018 17:58

Well it is a bad example to set to your daughter, your sex is quite irrelevant

Why is a hobby (if played reasonably and without negative affects to family life) a bad example?

MyKitchenIsATip · 02/12/2018 17:59

YANBU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tbh, did you really think we'd say anything else? It's bloody sexist!

I consider myself to be a hardcore gamer. I build my own gaming PCs and my build my friends' PCs too. When I play online with others, there's still some who are surprised I own a vagina. I like to remind them that it's 2018 and I don't need my husband to open a bank account anymore. Amusingly, because my voice is higher, there's often concern that I'm a 'squeaker' (a kid). I get asked if I'm over 18 ALL THE TIME (I most certainly am!).

I look very feminine and I don't dress to hide it, either, so I often get surprised looks when people realise how technical I am (I'm a programmer). I'm both annoyed and amused by this.

Celebelly · 02/12/2018 18:01

I can't wait to set a bad example to my daughter then 😉

I think a real bad example a parent can set is to be intolerant/judgemental of other people and their interests. Our daughter might like gaming, she might like reading, she might like horse-riding, she might like football. And she'll be supported and encouraged to do what she enjoys and get pleasure from.

darkriver198868 · 02/12/2018 18:08

In your experience. These are just shit parents/lazy people. If it wasnt gaming they would have some other excuse for being slobs.

This! When my DDs were at home with me the pc only went on once they were in bed and down for the night. Usually by then my chores were done.

MetalMidget · 02/12/2018 18:15

Not read the entire thread before replying because I'm a terrible human being, but...

Why would any parent want to model being a gamer to their child? It's not like you're modelling volunteering in a food bank is not?

You play pointless violent games, so what? Why is that good for girls? I'd understand if you were an astro physicist as that is an area where girls need more examples if successful women. But Call of Duty to promote the feminist cause, not convinced.

Most hobbies are pretty pointless. Watching TV or a movie is pointless. But studies have shown that girls that play games in childhood grow up to be far more tech savvy, and are more likely to consider a career in a STEM field.

The gaming industry is horrifically sexist so you’re up against all of them really

Bit of a sweeping generalisation there. I work in games, and the vast majority of guys aren't sexist at all - in fact, they're some of the most accepting folk I know, with zero tolerance for sexism, racism or homophobia. I have worked with a few arseholes though, and I think it's worse in the US where they have fire at will employment policies, and a bit more of a bro/jock culture.

Maybe I've just been lucky (I've heard some horror stories), but I'm sure the industry will improve as more women join.

FurryDogMother · 02/12/2018 18:26

59 yr old female gamer here :) I'm currently (due to underpowered laptop) back playing Old School RuneScape, but have been deeply invested in WoW, LOTRO, Skyrim etc. etc. over the years. I was just asking friends to explain what the best console system is, because it seems the cheapest way to access the latest games with their amazing graphics and immersive gameplay. Looks like I'll be getting an Xbox One X for Christmas (from myself). Of course women game!

KonekoBasu · 02/12/2018 18:27

"People over 40-45 tend to not really "get" gaming as a subculture because they missed the boat in terms of riding that particular tech wave."

Umm, I'm over 40, have been gaming since before I could say the word 'computer'!
