Aibu to hate the girls can't be gamers stereotype

So I personally am a gamer. I'm not talking candy crush on my phone I'm talking uncharted, tomb raider and assassins creed on my PS4. But I've gotten a lot of hate on this at work saying girls shouldn't be playing games and what example am i setting to my daughter. The scary thing is this is women saying this.
Now I personally feel I'm setting a pretty decent example to my Daughter by showing her that men aren't the only ones who can play video games and that women can be just as good at them or better (because I always dominate at battlefield I'm not kidding)
so Aibu to think there's nothing wrong with women gaming and that women should feel free to do it if they want to/can

Why would any parent want to model being a gamer to their child? It's not like you're modelling volunteering in a food bank is not?

Neither is baking, knitting, having your nails done, cycling, reading, sports, martial arts etc etc. Whats the difference?
Surely you can do more than one thing In your life?

Honestly never heard anyone say girls can't be gamers?

Crikey you must have been under a rock.

BumDisease · 02/12/2018 18:38

I'm 33 and have been into games since my Dad brought home a C64 sometime in the late 80s!

starzig · 02/12/2018 18:40

I have never encountered that attitude from anyone. Really strange company you must keep.

JacquesHammer · 02/12/2018 18:42

I have never encountered that attitude from anyone

Well whilst certainly not all of it, there’s a hardcore element in the games industry.

Willow2017 · 02/12/2018 18:46

Lala just read this thread plenty evidence of it on here (and past threads in the same vein)

Just because you havent exlerienced it doesnt mean.it doesn't happen. Ops post is pretty clear on what some of her female colleagues think.

Its not about being "smug and feminist" its about girls and women having the right to chose their hobby without some dickhead telling them they shouldnt as its not "suitable for females".

What is it about mn with the "it never happened to me so it never happens to anyone else." mentality?

YouTheCat · 02/12/2018 19:52

I met my dp playing WoW 10 years ago. We were in the same guild.

ghostsandghoulies · 02/12/2018 20:01

I'm 41 and work in games development.

I obviously don't get judged at work but when I walk into Game to buy a game, sales assistants always assume that I'm buying a gift for a husband or son or that I wouldn't be able to find the PS4 section of the shop Hmm There's a woman who works there so it really shouldn't be this way.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 02/12/2018 20:30

@RedDeadRoach you're on. Yeah. The GTA multiplayer was bloody awful.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 02/12/2018 20:31

Ooo. I just got the Red Dead online Beta. Going to have a nosey

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 02/12/2018 20:33

@BumDisease I started with a Commodore 64 too. Then an Amiga and my dads PC. We had a mega drive, still have my N64. It's been wonderful seeing that progression.

RedDeadRoach · 02/12/2018 20:34

The indications are the multiplayer for rdr2 ain't much better at the moment. I might check it out again tonight. The reports are too many griefers and the in game economy is messed up as in you don't earn enough from missions etc to actually buy anything.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 02/12/2018 20:42

@RedDeadRoach not what I wanted to hear. I've not finished the story so I've still plenty to do in the main game anyway.

RedDeadRoach · 02/12/2018 21:09

It's only a beta so there's still hope Smile

Tiscold · 02/12/2018 21:20

Online is in beta though right?
I think that there will always be teething problems and challenges, but lets hope it improves as it coupd be epic if it does.

MidnightAura · 02/12/2018 21:47

I have the same problem when I got to Game. I walk in on my own and I immediately get “Do you need a hand?” I also get it if I browse for more than two minutes. Walk in with my Husband and I never get bothered at all.

masterandmargarita · 02/12/2018 22:04

You don't get kids with reading or knitting addictions do you? Well not generally to the detriment of those around them at least. As a hobby it's not quite the same is it?

OhFlipMama · 02/12/2018 22:10

Oh my god. I've just come back to this thread and am seriously shocked. I said my daughter is a gamer, apparently that's a shit hobby and she'll end up being a dirty, unwashed, lazy person if she continues that hobby? What an awful assumption to make about people. Very nasty. She's actually in to many other things, including competing in team sport, a musical talent and nature.

I like knitting. That doesn't make me a granny with a grey bun and tiny specs who sits in a rocking chair all day.

Rubberduckies · 02/12/2018 22:54

I love that there's other couples who game :) My husband and I have some games which we both play (and fight over) like The Witcher, Fallout, The Long Dark and Kingdom Come. I like sim and tycoon games like theme hospital, 2 point and the Sims. He likes Arma, and various other strategic war games.

We don't really watch Tv. We do cook proper meals and wash....and I'm fairly sure we'll manage to look after baby when he/she is born. We manage to have real life friendships and go to work.... Some odd ideas about people who game on this thread!!

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 02/12/2018 23:16

Some really odd people on this thread. I've been gaming since the early 80s. I also knit, crochet, bake, sew, read, walk, do other hobbies and manage to hold down a career, studies and a family.

Gaming is a great hobby. There are loads of benefits and although male dominated, in my 35+ years of frequent gaming, I've ever come across gender/sex discrimination. And Call of Duty is a great game, by the way.

Longdistance · 02/12/2018 23:19

Yanbu.

I get this, but in a different sense, that we are pigeonholed into a category. I’m a mum, but I drive a coupe Mercedes. Why should I drive a 4x4 or people carrier 🤷🏼‍♀️

WellThisIsShit · 03/12/2018 21:31

I’ve had this thread open on my phone since Saturday, but have been too poorly to type on it as my hands are knackered from 2 massive stints on Minecraft building the amazing mansion DS needed without fail by Friday 3pm!

I love that I’m the mum that can do this for DS and I love the role model I’m showing him about women and their capabilities.

Wish my hands weren’t knackered though, seriously stops my gaming habit and I can only indulge on special occasions, or when saving my child from social horrors.

(He had kinda promised his friend he’d made this super amazingly complicated, vast and dynamic mansion, and that he’d show it at a play date on the Friday afternoon. Broke down in tears and told me about the non-existent mansion at 8pm on Thursday. Not the time to let him fall flat on his face to teach him a lesson about lying /exaggerating to friends, as I would normally. He’s been bullied unmercilessly this year and his self esteem and confidence is on the floor. Hence the playmate to try and help. So he needed a win. It was so nice to see his face when his ideas all came to life and he got to be a ‘pro’ in front of his friend. Honor discharged they had a great time collab-ing on other games :-)

I wish I could game more. Sighs wistfully for those days of Age Of Empires, I loved those games, silly though they were, oh oh oh Age of Mythologies was my absolute favorite. I’d do anything to be able to play it again!

Sethis · 03/12/2018 23:25

I credit Age of Empires with nurturing my interest in classical civilisations and teaching me about the ancient world. Age of Mythology for my love of... well, mythology, and Age of Empires 2 for my knowledge of the Crusades and Middle Ages. I would strongly recommend them to anyone, even today.

@WellThisIsShit

Really sorry to hear about your hands. My life outside of work would effectively end if I was unable to game. It's not just my stress release, it's also key to my imagination and my first point of social contact with people back in the UK. Can you play point and clicks at all? Things like Monkey Island or the Sierra Discovery series (Castle of Dr Brain, Lost Secret of the Rainforest, Search for Cetus)? Or turn based strategies like Civ or Xcom? Joysticks for flight/space sims? Do hope you manage to get some screen time in, if only now and again.

BadLad · 03/12/2018 23:31

I loved Age of Empires and Age of Empires 2. Didn't think much of 3.

The turn-based DS games are pretty good too, as is Star Wars Galactic Backgrounds, which is basically AoE 2 with a Star Wars theme.
