The daughter is over 18, but both going to a hotel this weekend and happily announces they will be getting pissed

AIBU to think this is inappropriate?

We’ve had a boozy Sunday lunch here today, I’m currently a bit pissed with my grandparents, mum, dad, auntie and uncle. Oops! And my 16 year old cousin even had a beer!

Aragog · 02/12/2018 18:24

I enjoy a drink or three with my mum, and my MIL for that matter. And my little sister (who is an adult just a fair bit younger) Also with my dad, FIL - oh and dh does too

Whilst we don't get drunk in that no-one is out of control, no one is being sick, etc. we do have more than the odd one and probably feel a little merry with it.

It's possibly just a figure of speech - ie having a few drinks together - rather than a mess of vomit and falling over, unable to function properly.

staydazzling · 02/12/2018 18:25
Confused
Tessabelle1 · 02/12/2018 18:29

If they're both adults how is it inappropriate?

Jaxhog · 02/12/2018 18:37

Ah, but it isn't having a drink - it's getting pissed. Bad example to set an 18 yr old.

RainbowTurd · 02/12/2018 18:44

I don’t think OP is coming back 🤣

busyhonestchildcarer · 02/12/2018 18:46

Whilst its great they have a good relationship I think its a shame that anyone should go out to deliberately get pissed

XingMing · 02/12/2018 18:48

DM (83) and I (62) regularly have one or two too many when we get together and set the world right. My DSis (only 59) has been known to join in.

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 02/12/2018 18:48

'getting pissed' can mean just getting tipsy / merry ....it doesn't necessarily mean falling down drunk.

Ratbag82 · 02/12/2018 18:49

I wish I had the kind of relationship with my parents where I could get drunk with them but my mum would in no way approve. It’s a shame because I’m a hilarious drunk. I can’t wait to take my own children to the pub and have a few with them when they’re old enough. I can’t see why it’s a problem?

arghhelpme · 02/12/2018 18:50

Yabu!

I was speaking to someone last week about how she done her first pill and line of coke with her mum Shock

So two adults getting drunk together isn't really an issue.

Hilarious WineWineWine

1998em · 02/12/2018 18:59

I used to go out with my mum all the time once I'd turned 18 before I had my daughter, we had so so much fun, why would it be inappropriate 😂

winniestone37 · 02/12/2018 19:09

Dear god get a life.

ragged · 02/12/2018 19:10

I don't see the fun in drinking enough to get passed out regardless of the company.

Jaxhog · 02/12/2018 19:11

What IS this obsession with alcohol?

I don't see the fun in drinking enough to get passed out regardless of the company.

To be fair I can't imagine many people do in reality.
However, from what I gather from people I know who might say they are 'getting pissed' they don't actually mean that stage - they mean a bit merry, but still in control of their actions, able to get themselves home and to bed, not being sick, not passing out etc.

I have drank a bit too much in the distant past. but I can say that I have never passed out and never been in a state where I haven't been able to get myself home in one piece, or know where I was, etc.

ferrier · 02/12/2018 19:26

Going out with the intention of getting pissed (which for me indicates the kind of drunkenness where you might be a danger to yourself) seems very childish. I'd expect someone old enough to have an adult child to be past that really.

supersop60 · 02/12/2018 19:30

I have never understood the desire to get pissed.

elbowlicker · 02/12/2018 19:32

My 20 year old son is very sensible. He drinks green tea! Think it's a generation thing; they've seen us all completely wankered at some point and that's not cool. He had a night on the Tequila with friends on Saturday night and can't remember how he got home & has a swollen hand. EEK! It's a first. Perhaps things are a changing, but jeez at that age I was trollied every other night; best times of my life!! If you make it a 'forbidden fruit' then you are in for trouble. Sure the hotel scenario is super safe, as in not having to negotiate getting home. Relax and get her to promise to message you when she's going to bed so you know she's safe. It's horrible knowing our little ones are growing up and experimenting. Many sleepless nights worrying. That's our problem not theirs

Esspee · 02/12/2018 19:45

I'm with you OP and shocked at the responses on here.

GabsAlot · 02/12/2018 19:48

i never even got drunk in front my parents but drink was never a thing in our house

BlaaBlaaBlaa · 02/12/2018 19:50

esspee you to realise we're talking about two adults don't you? Not an actual child.

ChodeofChodeHall · 02/12/2018 19:51

I've just heard from a friend who spent the evening doing lines with her grandfather, so this seems quite tame in comparison! Confused

bubblegumunicorn · 02/12/2018 19:53

When I was 18 my mum would give me money to go out and get pissed she doesn’t really drink and I don’t really drink anymore so we’ve never been pissed together but we probably would we have one or two at Christmas! What’s the problem really 18 year olds are 18 year olds weather you’re doing it with a parent or friend!
