The daughter is over 18, but both going to a hotel this weekend and happily announces they will be getting pissed

AIBU to think this is inappropriate?

I’m in my 30s and my mum is in her 60s. Any adult/child part of our relationship went years ago. We are equals now. So no I don’t see why we shouldn’t drink together.

Justajot · 02/12/2018 17:27

I have fond memories of the only time my mum and I got pissed together. It was 1/1/2000 and we’d got much of a jeroboam of champagne left from the night before, so drank kir royales all day. Is that ok? Or still inappropriate?

simiisme · 02/12/2018 17:27

Planning to get pissed is immature, however old you are.

Booboo66 · 02/12/2018 17:27

If ‘child’ is over 18 I absolutely don’t see the problem. Probably the safest person for daughter to be getting pissed with.

FontSnob · 02/12/2018 17:29

I’ve had some of our best conversations with my mum when pissed. Dont do it often but I love when we do.

Sarahrellyboo1987 · 02/12/2018 17:34

I don’t get the point in purposely getting drunk - surely you go out to have a good time? If you happen to get drunk then fair enough.
However - I don’t see the issue with mother and daughter going out together

Obi73 · 02/12/2018 17:38

How judgemental are you? Get over yourself - YABU.

Cali13 · 02/12/2018 17:38

I'm 26 and for a good few years have loved having a drink with my mum!! It's great and I don't see the problem ?!

FaveNumberIs2 · 02/12/2018 17:39

They are both consenting adults. Mind your business and pull your nose out of theirs.

Imissgmichael · 02/12/2018 17:39

Someone over 18 isn’t a child. Get a grip.

rainbowquack · 02/12/2018 17:40
Hmm
FastLane46 · 02/12/2018 17:41

Note to self... getting pissed with my mum is inappropriate by MN standards 😂

The thing is I don’t think drinking with your adult offspring is even inappropriate by mumsnet standards. It’s a pretty resounding YABVVU from all

ILoveDolly · 02/12/2018 17:45

I think people who want to maintain the child adult dynamic way into the adulthood of their children are the ones in the wrong. If you are treating your adult child like an adult, there will be times when you probably will drink together and that's OK.

EdisonLightBulb · 02/12/2018 17:48

Nah, YABU. I love nothing better than holidays with my adult DC and getting very merry over a few bottles of wine. We have many any interesting and engaging conversation throughout.

DD age 21 said she can't wait to get her own house then I can come for a sleepover, we can order a Thai and get pissed on Demi Sec Cava.

Classy, we are 😀

GerardButlersBird · 02/12/2018 17:54

Oh my there was me thinking I was passable parent.. but due to the fact that I sat in garden drinking copious amounts of pink gin with DD (19) throughly the summer’s world cup, I have had to re-evaluate. 😂 Not.

Wholovesorangesoda · 02/12/2018 17:54

I don't drink with my parents cos I find it quite cringey for me to do, but I don't think there is anything inappropriate about others doing it

GerardButlersBird · 02/12/2018 17:55

*throughout

pollymere · 02/12/2018 17:56

What a lovely relationship they must have if they enjoy doing that together.

Leapfrog44 · 02/12/2018 17:58

I've been blind drunk with my mother before and found it enormously fun.

VerbeenaBeeks · 02/12/2018 18:05

Oh FFS, I thought by the drama llamaing over mums getting pissed (heaven forbid) in front of/with their daughters said daughter was something like 11 or 12.
Over 18?! Adult. None of your beeswax.
I don't get pissed with my mum but I don't judge any ADULTS that do with theirs.

KeepTheBloodyNoiseDown · 02/12/2018 18:10

You’d hate my family op, I’ve done shots with grandparents from both sides of the family, and me and my dad once spent a night teaching each other drinking games (I was at uni and he kicked my arse).

ToftyAC · 02/12/2018 18:16

I used to enjoy having adult social time and catching a drink with my mum. I suppose our difference was I had to stay relatively sober as she was a raging alcoholic. However, I think having that sort of adult relationship with your parents is fab. I stopped putting mine on a pedestal and saw them for the flawed, but wonderful people they really were rather than just mum & dad. They both died well before their time so I’m glad we had that.

RaspberryRipple1963 · 02/12/2018 18:17

I can't help wondering if you'd feel the same way about a father and adult son doing the same?
