To banish cat from the house?

At night.

Have rehomed the bloody thing in the garage.

We haven't had a litter tray indoors for over a year. Had an outside one for a while which she didn't use so I removed it. For the last few weeks, when it's been wet outside, she has been shitting in her bed. Two mornings in a row now I've come down to it.

I don't want an indoor tray again so have locked her in the garage with tray and food where she will go every night over the winter from now on.

DC think IABU but they're not cleaning up the shit and having to do two boil washes, one for bed, one to clean machine!

We got a lovely cat from a cat shelter and he really was gorgeous but my god, he used to do these deep, from the back of the throat, yowling cries when he wanted to go out. At 3 am. Every single night.

We put it down to just having moved in with us. But it carried on. In the end I had to banish him to the garden shed at night with loads of blankets and food and so on - we couldn’t live like that.

I am surprised people are so shocked. Full time in the garage yes; overnight to prevent a particular problem - I am not seeing the issue.

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 07:03

I used to trawl the area to get her in when she was younger. She'd be yowling at door to get out again

This is the problem. You keep her in at night. She has no litter tray and no cat flap to get in and out, if she yowling at the door to get out.

gamerchick · 30/11/2018 07:03

OP your cat needs to go to the vet. Crapping in her bed is her telling you clearly something's not right.

mazu · 30/11/2018 07:05

Oh my bloody goodness OP as long as the cat is healthy (bed pooping isn't a good sign) you ARE NOT an evil witch for letting her stay overnight in a garage. Bear in might world over most cats DO actually leave and THRIVE outside. This is the most ridiculous thread ever!!!

DisneyMillie · 30/11/2018 07:09

I’m not a fan of litter smells either and as non cat owner I found I could smell it when my (now) dh moved in with his cat even when he couldn’t. His is an indoor cat so we compromised and bought a cattery unit for when we’re not in / overnight and she comes in when we are. That way she still has company but also has a lovely run and heated, lit, insulated “house” to sleep in with cushions / bedding - it wasn’t cheap but we’re all happy - could you consider that?

fenneltea · 30/11/2018 07:28

I disagree that most cats that live outside thrive; they may survive if they are lucky, but they don't thrive.

A cat soiling a bed is unwell or distressed. A cat that has no means of going to the toiet if needed will be a distressed cat and any decent person would want to avoid that. I have six cats, I use a decent litter (professional classic) and my trays do not smell. Banishing to a garage after being used to living in a home is unfair.

I'd recommend that you either step up to your responsibilities to your pet, or you rehome to someone prepared to give the necessary basic care.

withsexypantsandasausagedog · 30/11/2018 07:28

The cat must be unwell if it poos where it sleeps. Cats don't do that- they are clean animals. You need to take it TO A VET.

TopBitchoftheWitches · 30/11/2018 07:34

If her litter box was stinking, you were not cleaning it enough.
My kitten has one downstairs and there is another one upstairs in the bathroom for the older two cats for during the night. Neither of them smell. Hmm

londonrach · 30/11/2018 07:34

Yabu. Rehome your pet to a better owner. Where else do you want her to poo your neighbours garden. Your pet your poo. Get a litter tray. Poor cat

Cleojinx · 30/11/2018 07:35

So let me get this straight. You were providing nowhere for your cat to go to the toilet overnight when she was inside but are complaining that she crapped in the house Confused

Cat litter trays smell yep. Part and parcel of having a cat. I'm surprised you weren't aware that would be the case before you took in a cat.

We have our 2 trays in a cupboard under the stairs which has a square hole cut in for them to go in and out as they please. 2 trays for 2 cats with a constant hole in the door and my house doesn't smell unless they have literally just done a poo. There are ways and means around the smell.

If you're not going to spend time with the cat because she's either outside or in the garage what is the point in having her? Seriously how are you benefitting in any way from the cat? I just don't understand it.

Claw001 · 30/11/2018 07:40

I’m not understanding it either. No indoor litter tray, no cat flap and an outside litter tray, which the cat cannot use, as there isn’t a cat flap! I know, I will rehome her in the garage Confused

newplacenofriends · 30/11/2018 07:50

Why don't you go and have your poos outside? I'm sure when you have a poo inside it stinks up the bathroom.

Pets can have smelly aspects to them (food, toilet), if you aren't willing to accept that maybe don't get a pet.

Sivel12 · 30/11/2018 07:50

No ! You’ve asked the question so you know it’s not right .

Firstly a cat needs a clean litter tray available every day for the days where it’s too wet or the cat doesn’t want to go out for whatever reason.
Also don’t delude your self that cats want to be out ALL night whatever the weather - what happens is they want to go out for a bit at night but an hour or so after you’ve gone to bed their at the door hoping to be let in but your all safe and warm - unlike your pet.
GET A CAT FLAP - this solves all the problems.
Also it’s very unusual to soil their bed so a vet check up would be in order.
Oh and some love for the cat would be nice too, you don’t sound like you even like it - prob cute as a kitten for the kids but the reality is they are messy and demanding but amazing little characters if you take the time to bother .
Otherwise re home to a recognised charity that will find them what they deserve .
Don’t get anymore pets.

Mulberry72 · 30/11/2018 07:51

@oliversmumsarmy Please tell me where Zi can get strawberry smelling cat litter? Smile

Alfie190 · 30/11/2018 07:53

You make me sick. I feel so angry right now.

Pets do not belong in garages. Really wish this country would be a bit stricter on people that neglect and abuse animals.

Rehome your cat and then do not ever get another pet, you shouod be banned for life.

Oh and I would love to know what you would do if you had no access to a toilet? Hold it in forever ffs.

Greyhorses · 30/11/2018 07:57

So you take away the toilet and wonder why it has nowhere to shit Hmm

People really have no common sense any more.

Mercurial123 · 30/11/2018 08:04

OP you really shouldn't have a pet. Also teaching your children to mistreat an animal isn't good. Cats have few requirements but a clean litter box is probably top of the list. Stop being so cruel.

TheOnlyUpsyOne · 30/11/2018 08:04

Jesus, why have a cat at all if this is your attitude?

Youshallnotpass · 30/11/2018 08:07

I don't think this poster is genuine, people know that other people react strongly to animal cruelty.

My cat has chrone's disease and is on steroids, she has to have three enclosed litter trays but often gets caught short and goes under the bed or on the floor.
But when I took her on I took her on FOR LIFE no matter what and it's my job to make her comfortable and take care of her in her final years.
If you are not prepared to do that then for God's sake rehome the poor animal and don't get another one.

Inkythemouse · 30/11/2018 08:22

Our cat started using the house as a toilet when she was getting bullied outside.
I got her a litter tray and clean it twice a day. It doesn't stink and she's happy.
She's old and part of our family. I know cleaning up shit isn't pleasant but locking you cat in a garage when it's cold sounds awful

Harpingon · 30/11/2018 08:23

Both of my cats go out at night, sleep all day. Pretty much nocturnal creatures. They hunt and roam. If we try to keep them in they just yowl and and scratch by the door until we let them in. They have a cat flap to the kitchen but never use it and never come in till 6.30am when they come to the front door. Perfectly normal for cats as far as I can tell. House cats don't have any quality of life IMO.

Harpingon · 30/11/2018 08:24

let them out!!

Mercurial123 · 30/11/2018 08:27

Ink my cat comes and goes as she pleases. She still has a clean litter box at home. It's no big deal cleaning it. If the box smells add baking soda to the litter.
