To banish cat from the house?

At night.

Have rehomed the bloody thing in the garage.

We haven't had a litter tray indoors for over a year. Had an outside one for a while which she didn't use so I removed it. For the last few weeks, when it's been wet outside, she has been shitting in her bed. Two mornings in a row now I've come down to it.

I don't want an indoor tray again so have locked her in the garage with tray and food where she will go every night over the winter from now on.

DC think IABU but they're not cleaning up the shit and having to do two boil washes, one for bed, one to clean machine!

We had a cat that used to overnight sometimes in our utility room at the back of the garage, it was a small comfortable room that we put an oil radiator in to keep it warm during the winter.
Does your garage have heating? A house cat is going to need some heating overnight.
I am also surprised the cat messed it's bed rather than another area. Cats don't usually want to soil their sleeping area.

Notevenmyrealname · 30/11/2018 03:53

I’m not sure why sleeping in the garage is an issue. She is wearing a fur coat after all. It depends on your individual garage and how weather-proof it is. When I cat sit for my parents, she stays in the conservatory overnight. She has a padded bed and blankets so can make herself a warm bed and I’d only bring her in to the main part of the house if it was extremely cold weather like actually snowing or regularly dropping below zero. It solves the problem of the litter tray stinking out the house too so you can have one that she can use in emergencies.
Like someone else says, if her behaviour has recently changed, it’s worth taking her to the vet. I’m not really a cat person but we did have a dog until a year or so ago and that was always one of the rules we followed.

trainophobe · 30/11/2018 03:54

I've had cats all my life. None of them have ever crapped in their bed & I'd be highly worried they were very ill if they did. Please get the cat checked out. And unless your garage is heated, I think it'll be way too cold right through winter.

Butteredghost · 30/11/2018 03:59

A boil wash for your machine, after boil washing a pissed on cats bedding is totally unnecessary.

ilovesooty · 30/11/2018 05:17

The cat must be distressed to have soiled the bed.

Why did you get a cat in the first place?

VoiceOfCommonSense · 30/11/2018 05:22

You should go and sleep in the garage and see how it feels. The poor cat only went in it’s bed because there was no litter tray. The poor thing must have been stressed out having to do that.

TrueLoveWays · 30/11/2018 05:26

YABU
But why ask when you are so convinced you are right ?

uglyandlovingit · 30/11/2018 05:40

I really hope that you're a troll, op

It's because of people like you that we need pet licenses.

Greyhound22 · 30/11/2018 05:44

Rehome her. People like you don't deserve animals.

Also the neighbours probably haven't complained as how can you tell which cat is shitting in your garden? My back and front garden are now so covered in cat shit you can't use them properly but hey as long as you don't have to deal with your own pet's shit that's fine.

Vitalogy · 30/11/2018 05:47

OP, try Sainbury's ultimate clumping cat litter, it's been a revelation to me. It'll change you view on cat litter I'm sure of it.

eloliphant · 30/11/2018 06:04

This could be a sign your cat is ill OP, please take her to the vet to get checked out.

And then rehome her and give her to someone who actually wants her and will love her and treat her properly.

You can't lock a cat in a shed overnight, it's absolutely disgusting. I don't know why you've even got her? I really hope this is a troll

Brexshit · 30/11/2018 06:12

😿

ToeCleavage · 30/11/2018 06:13

I need to hide this thread because people like you seriously depress me. That cat is a sentient being. It feels. It hurts. You obviously don’t.

Tigger85 · 30/11/2018 06:16

My parents did this to our cat when I was a child. One night when she must have been around 10 years old in the winter she came in for the night, no litter tray, no way out of the house, she dragged my dad's pants out of the laundry and pooed on them. After that she had to live in the garage. They cut a hole in the door for her to enter and exit. She did have an electric blanket in there. The over all treatment and care of her went downhill from there. I have still never forgiven them for the treatment of the cat.

PersonaNonGarter · 30/11/2018 06:19

This thread is mad. Why shouldn’t a cat live in a garage?! She is warm, dry and with a bed.

Biancadelriosback · 30/11/2018 06:28

Would you like it person?

bionicnemonic · 30/11/2018 06:33

I’ve not read the full thread but have you checked her paws are okay? Just in case that’s why she doesn’t want to dig. I think it’s unusual for a cat to soil it’s own bed

supercatlady · 30/11/2018 06:34

Yes you are very unreasonable.
There are various things you could/should be doing, without resorting to banishing your cat to a freezing cold shed.

  1. As pp have said, get her checked out by the vet
  2. Consider changing her food. My cat has always been on high quality dry food and a hooded litter tray does just fine
  3. Consider re-homing
PurpleFlower1983 · 30/11/2018 06:34

A clean litter tray doesn’t smell. Disinfected once or twice a week and scooped every day should do it. Poor kitty.

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 30/11/2018 06:38

Mine started crapping in the corner of the room. I took her to the vets because it was out of character for her. She had an infection, had antibiotics and some kaolin, and now she doesn't crap in the corner of the room. Cats are generally clean creatures, please look after yourself.

Blanchedupetitpois · 30/11/2018 06:42

Is your garage heated? If it isn’t you are being terribly cruel and you should rehome her rather than treat her this way.

Cats need litter trays. Very few cats who start with litter trays ever fully transition to going exclusively outside. It’s not her fault you took her on board without being willing to provide her with what she needs.

nottakingthisanymore · 30/11/2018 06:48

A cat messing its bed is a stressed cat. You need to take her to the vets not banish from the house. Your attitude to your pet sounds quite unpleasant. Is this some sort of ill judged attempt at humour?

BeardedMum · 30/11/2018 06:49

Cruel

makingmammaries · 30/11/2018 06:52

OP, it sounds fine. Many people in France put cats in the garage at night and there’s no sign of a cat shortage here. The people asking how you would like it should revise basic zoology...

Picnictime · 30/11/2018 06:56

YABU!
Get a cat box, change the litter, try different litters if they don't work for you. Try different food - cheap food like whiskas reeks. Get indoor cat food from royal canin. Raw diet also works wonders.
You need to clean the trays so they don't smell. Regular changing, removal of poop, lined with newspaper and liners. Clean out with zoflora.
Plenty of my friends and family with indoor cats and their houses do not smell.
My cat is 18 years old. Are you going to do this every night for 18 years....? YABU
